Furuvik Zoo (Swedish : Furuviksparken) is an amusement park and zoo in Furuvik, Sweden. [1]
Furuviksparken was founded in 1900 by Oscar Jakobsson and officially opened by count Olle Cronstedt. In 1938 the zoo was bought by Gösta Nygren, who managed the zoo for 45 years. Nygren established a youth circus, Furuviksbarnen (the children of Furuvik), which became the main attraction not only in the park but also on travelling tours. Nyhren also introduced live concerts with famous artists, like Louis Armstrong, Jussi Björling and Sammy Davis.
Gävle Municipality took over the park 1983, again sold to Tom Widorson in 2004, and in 2010 sold to the present owner, Parks & Resorts Scandinavia AB.
The zoo attracted a degree of international attention when it was reported in March 2009 that a chimpanzee residing there had planned attacks on visitors. Santino planned attacks by taking stones from the protective moat and placing them only on the side facing the visitors on the island where he lived. Later, when the visitors arrived, he would throw the stones across the moat at them.
This shows that the cognitive ability for forward planning is not uniquely human. [3] [4]
After five chimpanzees' escape from the zoo in December 2022, three were shot dead - the 3-year-old Torsten, Linda and Santino -, one was wounded, and one returned to the zoo. [2] [5] Later, a fourth was shot dead. [6]

Santino was a male chimpanzee held at Furuvik Zoo in Sweden. In March 2009, it was reported that Santino had planned hundreds of stone-throwing attacks on visitors to the zoo. Santino was shot after escaping his enclosure in December 2022, and later died from his injuries.

Nils Kurt Erik Einar Grönberg, who was commonly known as Einár, was a Swedish rapper. He released four albums, two of which topped the Swedish album chart. In 2019, he won the Musikförläggarnas pris for Breakthrough of the Year and in 2020 he won two Grammis, Sweden's oldest pop music awards. Two of his singles peaked at number one on the Swedish singles chart and four have been certified platinum by the Swedish Recording Industry Association (SRIA). The 2022 Furuvik Zoo chimpanzee shootings occurred around 12 o'clock noon on Wednesday 14 December 2022, when a number of the chimpanzees kept at Furuvik Zoo in Furuvik, Gävle Municipality, Sweden, escaped from their enclosure into the chimpanzee building and made an attempt to enter the zoo itself, which was closed to the public for the winter season. The zoo staff responded by firing on the escaping apes with lethal force and live ammunition. The incident, which led to the deaths of at least four chimpanzees, caused significant domestic and international attention, and prompted much debate about zoos and the keeping of great apes in captivity. The incident has also been described as "the Massacre in Furuvik", "the Furuvik Bloodbath", and "the Chimpanzee Drama".
