Future Past Life is the sixth studio album by the Portland-based indie rock band STRFKR, released on April 10, 2020, through Polyvinyl Records.
The material that would eventually lay the groundwork for Future Past Life was brought about when principle songwriter Josh Hodges was visiting Amsterdam while working on the band's previous studio album Being No One, Going Nowhere . At the recommendation of a European traveler who was renting his L.A. home while he was abroad, Hodges connected with Mathias Janmat and David Hoogerheide, two similarly inclined musicians in Amsterdam. Within hours of meeting, the three were collaborating on new music together and would continue to do so on multiple occasions during Hodges' stay in the country, recording demos as they went along. Eventually Hodges' trip came to an end, but he continued to revisit the songs from the sessions with Janmat and Hoogerheide. Feeling that the songs were "inspired and magical" and using the Amsterdam demos as a blueprint, Strfkr recorded Future Past Life, adding the new layers of the full band's skill and nuance while retaining the core sound of the demo tracks. After moving from L.A. back to Portland, Hodges continued to collaborate with Janmat and Hoogerheiede remotely as he finalized the album in his home studio. The pair also contributed to Tape Machine, which would become the opening track and second single from Being No One, Going Nowhere. [1]
Future Past Life also includes a feature by labelmates Shy Boys, who contribute vocals to the track Budapest. Visual artist and longtime Strfkr collaborator Sohale Kevin Darouian returned to provide the album's artwork, packaging design, and digital visuals.
While answering questions during an AMA on Reddit, the band said the following about Future Past Life:
"Yeah this album we decided to have a few themes we wanted to stick to. One was every song having acoustic guitar on it, 2 was the drums being run through a tape machine to make them a little lofi and squished, the 3rd was that theres a descending melody that is on almost every song." [2]
Throughout early 2020, Strfkr released three singles from the album with accompanying visualizer videos: Never the Same on February 28, 2020; Deep Dream on March 12, 2020; and Budapest on March 27, 2020. A 7-week tour was scheduled with 34 dates at venues across the United States, though the tour was soon postponed and ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [3]
On April 10, 2020, Future Past Life was released at midnight, with the band only announcing the release a few hours beforehand. [4]
Following the high-production and polish of their previous installment, Future Past Life utilizes a much more stripped-down and dream-like sound. The album is the first in the band's catalogue to be primarily structured around acoustic guitar, with the usually-frontrunning synth playing a more supportive role. It is evident that the band aimed to capture the same immediacy and roughness that was present in the demo tracks. Lyrically, the album features emotional and dark content regarding abuse and redemption or healing, either based on the band's personal experiences or those they've read about. [2] Heavy lyrics are common to STRFKR's music, though here they are complemented by the acoustic sound and more audible than in previous, more poppy installments. [1]

Lo-Pro is an American rock band formed in 2002 by Pete Murray and Neil Godfrey after the disbandment of their previous band, Ultraspank, in 2001. After attracting the attention of Aaron Lewis of Staind, the band signed to a major record label, Geffen Records, and released their debut album, Lo-Pro in 2003. After a year of touring in support of the album, they would be dropped from their label. The band stayed together, but it would be almost six years until any further music releases, with the band opting to record and re-record several album's worth of material, participate in side-projects, and perform live shows prior to finalizing new material for release.

Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson is an Icelandic musician; he is the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. He is known for his use of a cello bow on guitar and his "angelic" falsetto or countertenor voice. He is blind in his right eye from birth as a result of a broken optic nerve from the brain. He is openly gay. Apart from Sigur Rós, Jónsi also performs together with his ex-partner Alex Somers as an art collaboration called Jónsi & Alex. They released their self-titled first book in November 2006, which was an embossed hardcover limited to 1,000 copies. The two also released the album Riceboy Sleeps, in July 2009. They announced their separation in 2019, after having been together for 16 years.

Haken are an English progressive metal band formed in 2007 by multi-instrumentalist Richard Henshall, guitarist Matthew Marshall, and vocalist Ross Jennings. Reptilians is the third studio album by the Portland-based electronic indie rock band Strfkr. Departing from the light feel of their previous work, Jupiter (2009), the twelve-track Reptilians includes lyrics by Joshua Hodges about death and the end of the world, while musically not sounding depressing. One of the ways these theories are supported is using samples of British-American philosopher Alan Watts in some of the tracks. Finished in November 2010 and released on March 8, 2011 by Polyvinyl Records, two singles were issued from Reptilians, which was "Julius" in late 2010 and "Bury Us Alive" in January 2011. Upon its release, the album earned mostly positive reviews from music critics, with praise going towards the band's development from their previous records and re-listening value. On the American Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, it entered at number 26.

"Black Honey" is a song by American rock band Thrice. The song was released on April 27, 2016 as the lead single from their ninth studio album, ToBe Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere. It was the first single the band released following their breakup in 2012 and subsequent reunion in 2015. The political track uses the imagery of a man swatting at a beehive in search of honey as a metaphor for the creation of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant as a consequence of United States involvement in the Middle East, using the titular "black honey" as a euphemism for oil. The song was a large comeback hit for the band, charting at No. 11 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, their highest-charting single to date and their first charting single since "Image of the Invisible" in 2005.
