Keisha Lance Bottoms is an American attorney and politician who served as the 60th mayor of Atlanta,Georgia,from 2018 to 2022. She was elected mayor in 2017. The 2020 United States presidential election in Georgia was held on Tuesday,November 3,2020,as part of the 2020 United States presidential election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. Georgia voters chose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote,pitting the Republican Party's nominee,incumbent President Donald Trump of Florida,and running mate Vice President Mike Pence of Indiana against Democratic Party nominee,former Vice President Joe Biden of Delaware,and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris of California. Georgia has 16 electoral votes in the Electoral College.
After Democratic nominee Joe Biden won the 2020 United States presidential election,Republican nominee and then-incumbent president Donald Trump pursued an unprecedented effort to overturn the election,with support from his campaign,proxies,political allies,and many of his supporters. These efforts culminated in the January 6 Capitol attack by Trump supporters in an attempted self-coup d'état. Trump and his allies used the "big lie" propaganda technique to promote claims that had been proven false and conspiracy theories asserting the election was stolen by means of rigged voting machines,electoral fraud and an international conspiracy. Trump pressed Department of Justice leaders to challenge the results and publicly state the election was corrupt. However,the attorney general,director of National Intelligence,and director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency –as well as some Trump campaign staff –dismissed these claims. State and federal judges,election officials,and state governors also determined the claims were baseless.
In direct response to election changes related to the COVID-19 pandemic and 2020 United States presidential election in Georgia;the Donald Trump 2020 presidential campaign launched numerous civil lawsuits contesting the election processes of Georgia. All of these were either dismissed or dropped.
On January 2,2021,during an hour-long conference call,then-U.S. President Donald Trump pressured Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find 11,780 votes" and overturn the state's election results from the 2020 presidential election. Trump had been unequivocally defeated by Joe Biden in the election,but refused to accept the outcome,and made a months-long effort to overturn the results. Prior to the call to Raffensperger,Trump and his campaign spoke repeatedly to state and local officials in at least three states in which he had lost,urging them to recount votes,throw out some ballots,or replace the Democratic slate of electors with a Republican slate. Trump's call with Raffensperger was released by The Washington Post and other media outlets the next day,after Trump made a statement about the call on Twitter.
Fani Taifa Willis is an American attorney. She is the district attorney of Fulton County,Georgia,which contains most of Atlanta,serving since 2021. She is the first woman to hold the office. Willis investigated the 2020 presidential election in Georgia,which resulted in indictments against Donald Trump and 18 alleged co-conspirators on charges of racketeering and other crimes. Willis also investigated and apprehended rapper Young Thug and members of his YSL record label on charges of racketeering and gang-related crimes in violation of Georgia's RICO Act.
Several elections took place in the U.S. state of Georgia in 2022. The general election was held on November 8,2022. A runoff election for one of Georgia's seats in the United States Senate was held on December 6,2022. The runoff was scheduled because none of the candidates for Senate received 50% of the statewide vote in the general election. In addition to the Senate seat,all of Georgia's seats in the United States House of Representatives were up for election. Also up for election were all of Georgia's executive officers and legislative seats,as well as one seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission. The Republican Party decisively won every single statewide office in Georgia except for the Federal Senate race which narrowly went Democratic in 2022.

Raffensperger emerged as a major national figure in early January,2021 when he faced significant pressure from then-President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Trump had been taped in a phone call asking Raffensperger to "find 11,780 votes," the exact number needed for Trump to carry the state. The party primary elections took place on May 24,with runoffs scheduled for June 21.
The 2022 Georgia lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 8,2022,to elect the lieutenant governor of the U.S. state of Georgia. It coincided with various other statewide elections,including for U.S. Senate,U.S. House,and Governor of Georgia. Georgia is one of 21 states that elects its lieutenant governor separately from its governor.
In February 2021,Fulton County,Georgia,district attorney Fani Willis launched a criminal investigation into alleged efforts by then-president Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the certified 2020 election victory of Democratic candidate Joe Biden and award the state's electoral college votes to Trump. A special grand jury recommended indictments in January 2023,followed by a grand jury that indicted Trump and 18 allies in August 2023. The charges include conspiracy,racketeering and other felonies.
The State of Georgia v. Donald J. Trump,et al. is a pending criminal case against Donald Trump,the 45th president of the United States,and 18 co-defendants. The prosecution alleges that Trump led a "criminal racketeering enterprise",in which he and all other defendants "knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome" of the 2020 U.S. presidential election in Georgia. All defendants are charged with one count of violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute,which has a penalty of five to twenty years in prison. The indictment comes in the context of Trump's broader effort to overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election.
