Early life

Schell is a native of Alberta, Canada, [1] where she grew up playing music from an early age. During the pursuit of a classical harp degree in college, she began listening to piano greats Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Red Garland, [2] among others. This inspired a move east and subsequent graduation from the jazz program at McGill University.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, but simply "O.P." by his friends. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists, and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

Bill Evans American jazz pianist

William John Evans was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly played in trios. His use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today.

Later life and career

Schell gained valuable experience playing with protégés of Joe Henderson, Wynton Kelly, and Ella Fitzgerald. A 1999 Canada Council for the Arts grant took Gaea to New York City where she studied with pianist Richie Beirach.

Wynton Charles Kelly was an American jazz pianist and composer. He is known for his lively, blues-based playing and as one of the finest accompanists in jazz. He began playing professionally at the age of 12, and was pianist on a No. 1 R&B hit at the age of 16. His recording debut as leader occurred three years later, around the time he started to become better known as accompanist to singer Dinah Washington, and as a member of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's band. This progress was interrupted by two years in the United States Army, after which Kelly returned to Washington and Gillespie, and played with other leaders. Over the next few years, these included instrumentalists Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, John Coltrane, Roland Kirk, Wes Montgomery, and Sonny Rollins, and vocalists Betty Carter, Billie Holiday, and Abbey Lincoln.

Ella Fitzgerald American jazz singer

Ella Jane Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.

Schell made her California debut as a featured performer at the San Jose Jazz Festival and has been performing professionally as a pianist (and recently vocalist) for over ten years in many diverse musical contexts. Her experience includes everything from trio to big band to solo work to orchestral performance. She has played with Nancy King, John Stowell, Tootie Heath, Tony Dumas, Bob Sheppard, Ingrid Jensen, Bobby Watson, Dan Faehnle, Earl Palmer, and Gilbert Castellanos.

Nancy King is a jazz singer from Portland, Oregon. Known for her masterful scatting and elastic range, King has performed in worldwide tours and recordings, as well as collaborations with such artists as Jon Hendricks, Vince Guaraldi, Ralph Towner, Dave Friesen and others.

Blossom & Bee is a studio album by American jazz singer Sara Gazarek released on June 19, 2012 by Palmetto Records. All the tracks are cover versions except "Blossom & Bee," which Gazarek wrote with producer Larry Goldings and Bill DeMain, and "Fly Away Birdie," which she wrote with pianist Josh Nelson. Seven of the twelve songs on this album have been recorded by Blossom Dearie. The album debuted No. 18 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart.

Ellen Andrea Wang Norwegian musician

Ellen Andrea Wang is a Norwegian jazz musician and composer. She is the cousin of singer-songwriter Marthe Wang. Raised in Søndre Land, Oppland, she released her debut album, Diving, in 2014. She formed the band Pixel in 2010. Wang has toured with Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur and has performed with Sting.

Tamar Halperin is an Israeli harpsichordist, pianist and musicologist. She has played Baroque music in historically informed performance, but also classical repertory and jazz with a big band.
