The 1972 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XI Olympic Winter Games, was a winter multi-sport event held in Sapporo, Japan, from 3 to 13 February 1972. A total of 1,006 athletes representing 35 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in 35 events from 10 different sports and disciplines.
Galina Alexeyevna Kulakova is a Soviet former cross-country skier, arguably the best skier on distances shorter than 10 km in the early 1970s. She won four Olympic golds, two individual in 1972 and two relay golds in 1972 and 1976. She was the most successful athlete at the 1972 Winter Olympics, along with Ard Schenk of the Netherlands. Competing in the World Championships, she won three individual golds, two in 1974 and one in 1970, and also two relay golds in those years. Kulakova also won the 10 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 1970 and 1979. Galina Kulakova was also 39 times Champion of the USSR between 1969 and 1981.

Alpine Skiing at the 1994 Winter Olympics consisted of ten alpine skiing events, held north of the host city of Lillehammer, Norway. The speed events were held at Kvitfjell and the technical events at Hafjell from 13 to 21 February.
Galina Valentinovna Chistyakova is a retired athlete who represented the Soviet Union and later Slovakia. She is the current world record holder in the long jump, jumping 7.52 metres on 11 June 1988. She is the 1988 Olympic bronze medalist and the 1989 World Indoor champion. She is also a former world record holder in the triple jump with 14.52 metres in 1989.
Galina Andreyevna Stepanskaya is a former speed skater who competed for the Soviet Union. She won the 1,500 m event at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. She was Soviet Allround Champion in 1976 and 1977 and won silver twice at the World Allround Championships, in 1977 and 1978. In 2009, she was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour.
Galina Vladimirovna Likhachova is a Russian speed skater who won a bronze medal in the Women's team pursuit at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

At the 1998 Winter Olympics she won a gold medal in the 7.5 km sprint, and was a part of the team that won a silver medal in the relay. Four years later at the 2002 Winter Olympics she was a part of the team that won a bronze medal. In the World Championships she earned a silver medal in the mass start from 2000, in addition to five relay medals. She won 9 world cup competitions by the end of her career.
Yevgeniya Nikolaevna Sidorova was a Soviet alpine skier who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1956 Winter Olympics, in the 1960 Winter Olympics, and in the 1964 Winter Olympics.
Tatyana Aleksandrovna Sidorova is a Russian speed skater who competed for the Soviet Union in the 1964 and 1968 Winter Olympics. In 1964 she won the bronze medal in the 500 m event. Four years later she finished ninth in the 500 m competition.
The women's slalom at the 1956 Winter Olympics was held on 30 January. It was run on the Col Druscie. The course was 456 metres (1,496 ft) in length with a 175 m (574 ft) vertical drop. There were forty-one gates on the first run and forty-five gates for the second run. Forty-eight women from sixteen countries entered in the race. Twelve women were disqualified during the two runs. Swiss skier Renée Colliard won gold over Austrian Regina Schöpf, who placed second, and Russian Yevgeniya Sidorova who won the bronze.
Valentina Vasilyevna Sidorova was a Soviet fencer. She won a gold medal in the women's team foil event at the 1976 Summer Olympics and a silver in the same event at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
Olga Sharkova-Sidorova is a Russian fencer. She competed in the women's individual and team foil events at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics. She also won a silver medal at the 1990 World Fencing Championships and the 1991 World Fencing Championships, and a bronze medal at the 1987 Summer Universiade.
Galina Petrovna Arsenkina is a Russian curler from Moscow. She currently plays second on Team Alina Kovaleva. She competed at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics as the second on the Olympic Athletes from Russia and Russian Olympic Committee women's curling teams, skipped by Victoria Moiseeva and Alina Kovaleva respectively. She has won two medals at the World Women's Curling Championship: a bronze in 2018 and a silver in 2021. She was also the second on Team Moiseeva when they won the 2016 European Curling Championships.
Marina Grigorievna Sidorova is a Russian former Soviet track and field sprinter. She was a seven-time Soviet champion, winning over distances from 100 metres to 400 metres.
Yulia Alexandrova Portunova is a Russian curler from Kaliningrad. She currently plays third on Team Alina Kovaleva. She competed at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics as the alternate on Olympic Athletes from Russia and the third on the Russian Olympic Committee women's curling teams, skipped by Victoria Moiseeva and Alina Kovaleva respectively. She has won two medals at the World Women's Curling Championship: a bronze in 2018 and a silver in 2021. She was also the alternate for the Moiseeva rink when they won the 2016 European Curling Championships.
Galina Shikhova is a Soviet alpine skier. She competed in three events at the 1972 Winter Olympics.
The 2022 Nornickel Curling Cup, the sixth edition of the traditional World Curling Tour event, was held from May 26 to 29 at the Taimyr Ice Arena in Dudinka, Russia. For all the teams competing, it was their final event of the 2021–22 curling season.
