Galle Literary Festival is an international literary festival held annually in the beautiful south coastal fort town of Galle, Sri Lanka. [1] In recent years the profile of the festival has increased substantially, with attendance by many internationally acclaimed and well-known authors and speakers.

In 2024 the title sponsor of the festival was Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.

History

The festival was founded in 2007 by Anglo-Australian hotelier Geoffrey Dobbs with an ambition to promote the boutique tourism industry in Sri Lanka as well as to bench mark Sri Lankan authors alongside internationally recognised authors.

There were an operational setbacks in 2013 resulting in a brief hiatus until 2017 and then once again from 2020 - 2023 due to COVID and funding restrictions. 2025 will be the 12th edition of Galle Literary Festival.

The festival is now one of the leading cultural festivals in South Asia has expanded its remit to include an art trail, gourmet programme, comedy, music and entertainment. In 2024 the festival received recognition for its diversity and openness to spotlighting sensitive issues of the day [2]

Galle Literary Festival has featured many notable international, diaspora and local authors over the years including Tom Stoppard, Shehan Karunatilaka, Michael Morpurgo, Julian Barnes Richard Dawkins, Simon Sebag Montefiore, David Thompson, Sashi Tharoor, Shyam Selvadurai, Romesh Gunasekera, Dame Maggie Smith, Richard Flanagan, Siddharth Dasgupta, Ashok Ferrey, Ameena Hussein, DBC Pierre and Tishani Doshi.

In 2024 headliners included Mary Beard, Shehan Karunatilaka, Sebastian Faulks, Christina Lamb, Anthony Horowitz and Alexander McCall Smith.

Gourmet Galle

Since its inception, Galle Literary Festival has invited international chefs from around the world to host intimate "author dinners". Building on the success of these events, Gourmet Galle was introduced in 2024. The Gourmet Galle programme invites a different international chef every weekend from Jan - March to host a dinner and a masterclass. Events are held at boutique hotels along the coast from Hikkaduwa to Tangalle.

The 2024 chef lineup included James Lowe (Lyle's, London), O Tama Carey (Lanka Food), Jeremy Lee, Cynthia Shanmugalingam (Rambutan restaurant & cookbook), Karan Gokani (Hoppers, London), Mark Hix, Rishi Naleendra (Cloud Kitchen, SG), Paul Flynn (Tannery Restaurant), Mandy Yin (Sambal Shiok) and Peter Kuruvita

Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination. Tourism is a key industry that attracts international tourists yearly. The Galle Face Hotel, founded in 1864, is one of the oldest hotels east of Suez. It is located on Galle Road, Colombo. The Ceylon Hotels Corporation is now part of the Galle Face Hotel Group. The hotel is a member of Select Hotels and Resorts International. The current chairman of the hotel is Sanjeev Gardiner, since the demise of his father Cyril Gardiner in 1997. It is listed as one of the "1000 Places to See Before You Die" in the book of the same name. It received the "Best Heritage Hotel" title three years running at the Presidential Awards for Travel and Tourism, held in June 2010, June 2011 and September 2012. In addition it won the first-ever PATA award for Best International Heritage Hotel, in 2012. In September 2012, it became the first hotel in Sri Lanka to be featured on a postage stamp, along with three other iconic buildings in Colombo.

It was first held in 1997 and managed by Marina Libia and event management company Consuming Passions, run by Ian Parmenter and David Evans. Each year the event attracts more than 200 national and international journalists and around 50,000 visitors.

Puerto Vallarta International Gourmet Festival(The Festival Gourmet International Vallarta) is an annual culinary festival held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, every November since 1995. There were 35,000 visitors to the festival in 2006.

Gampalage Shehan Naveendra De Fonseka Gunawarna Jayasuriya, or commonly Shehan Jayasuriya, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer, who played for Chilaw Marians in Sri Lankan domestic cricket and has represented Sri Lanka internationally. He is a quick-scoring left-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. He was born in Colombo, and attended Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa. He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in Sri Lanka on 8 January 2021 because of him moving to United States to live with his wife and her family.

The Curry Club was founded by Pat Chapman in 1982, to further the understanding and appreciation of the cuisines of the Indian subcontinent. In 2007 it became known as Pat Chapman's Curry Club.

Ahangama is a coastal town in Galle District, Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It is approximately 18 km (11 mi) east of Galle. The A2 highway passes through the town.

The Gratiaen Prize is an annual literary prize for the best work of literary writing in English by a resident of Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1992 by the Sri Lankan-born Canadian novelist Michael Ondaatje with the money he received as joint-winner of the Booker Prize for his novel The English Patient. The prize is named after Ondaatje's mother, Doris Gratiaen.

Shehan Karunatilaka is a Sri Lankan writer. He grew up in Colombo, studied in New Zealand and has lived and worked in London, Amsterdam and Singapore. His 2010 debut novel Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew won the Commonwealth Book Prize, the DSC Prize, the Gratiaen Prize and was adjudged the second greatest cricket book of all time by Wisden. His third novel The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida was announced as the winner of the 2022 Booker Prize on 17 October 2022.

The World Gourmet Summit is an annual culinary event held in Singapore, which started in 1997. Its objective is to showcase dining in Singapore and promote local chefs while featuring Michelin-starred chefs and vintners from around the world. It is organised by a La Carte Productions, a division of Peter Knipp Holdings Pte Ltd, and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

Dharshan Munidasa is Sri Lanka’s most renowned chef-restaurateur, is the mastermind behind some of the best restaurants in the country including Nihonbashi and Ministry of Crab; the only restaurants from Sri Lanka to have ever been ranked on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants List. He was also the host of the popular TV series Culinary Journeys with Dharshan.

Commonwealth Foundation presented a number of prizes between 1987 and 2011. The main award was called the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and was composed of two prizes: the Best Book Prize was awarded from 1987 to 2011; the Best First Book prize was awarded from 1989 to 2011. Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew is a 2010 novel by Shehan Karunatilaka. Using cricket as a device to write about Sri Lankan society, the book tells the story of an alcoholic journalist's quest to track down a missing cricketer of the 1980s. The novel was critically hailed on publication, winning awards and much positive review coverage.

Yasmine Gooneratne was a Sri Lankan poet, short story writer, university professor and essayist. She was recognised in Sri Lanka, Australia, throughout Europe, and the United States, due to her substantial creative and critical publications in the field of English and post-colonial literature. After 35 years in Australia, she returned to live in Sri Lanka.

Sort of Books is an independent British publishing house started in 1999 by Mark Ellingham and Natania Jansz, founders of the Rough Guides travel series. The company publishes both original and classic fiction and non-fiction titles: "The sort of books [readers] will want to discover and re-discover."

The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a 2022 novel by Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka and winner of the 2022 Booker Prize. The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida was published on 4 August 2022 by the small independent London publisher Sort of Books (ISBN 978-1908745903). An earlier version of the novel was originally published in the Indian subcontinent as Chats with the Dead in 2020.
