The GAMURS Group, simply known as Gamurs, is an esports media and entertainment publisher. Established in 2014, the group operates multiple brands focusing on the esports and entertainment news markets, including the websites: Dot Esports, We Got This Covered, The Mary Sue , Prima Games , and Escapist . GAMURS is based in Sydney, Australia, with an office in Austin, Texas. [1] [2] [3]

History

In 2010, at the age of 14, Riad Chikhani and Phillip Luu established Rune Gear, an online portal for the game RuneScape . They sold the business at the age of 17 to focus on school. Their experience with this portal inspired the pair to develop a similar business, but for a wider variety of games. This later became the GAMURS Group.

GAMURS began as a social network for gamers after joining the NRMA Jumpstart program run by the Slingshot Accelerator. [4] Shortly after the program ended, the company raised $500,000 in a seed round.

GAMURS acquired two platforms, TeamFind and CSGOTeamFinder. On February 14, 2016, these sites merged to provide team and player-finding functionality for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends . GAMURS raised an additional $500,000 in another seed round in April 2016. [5]

On April 26, 2016, GAMURS acquired esports publication websites eSports-Nation.com, GoldPer10, and eSports.guru. [6] Once the acquisitions were completed, the three platforms were merged, making GAMURS a content provider for titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops III , Halo 5: Guardians , Hearthstone , and Overwatch .[ citation needed ] On June 11, GAMURS launched EsportsWikis, an online encyclopedia dedicated to esports. [7] On September 19, it acquired esports news outlet SplitPush.net. [8] On October 28, GAMURS acquired Dot Esports from The Daily Dot . [9] [10] [11]

On November 9, 2020, GAMURS acquired Pro Game Guides, a source for gaming guides. [12] On June 28, 2021, GAMURS acquired We Got This Covered, a news site for film, TV, comics, and entertainment culture. [13] On November 17, GAMURS acquired the website The Mary Sue , a website intended to highlight women in the geek culture space and provide a space for minority and underrepresented voices. On January 3, 2022, GAMURS announced the acquisition of Prima Games, a gaming media company. [16] On February 10, it announced the acquisition of Twinfinite, a website focused on video game news, reviews, features, and opinions. [17] On September 30, it confirmed the acquisition of several websites from Enthusiast Gaming, including Destructoid , The Escapist , PC Invasion, and Siliconera. [18] Their firing of The Escapist 's editor-in-chief in November 2023 resulted in a number of contributors at the website—notably Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw of Zero Punctuation —resigning and forming a new employee-owned outlet. From its inception in 2007, episodes were published weekly by internet magazine The Escapist. Episodes typically range from 5 to 6 minutes in length. Videos provide caustic humour, rapid-fire delivery, visual gags and critical insight into recently released video games, with occasional reviews of older games and retrospectives of the industry itself. In 2023, Zero Punctuation was discontinued following Croshaw's resignation from The Escapist and the formation of Second Wind, with new reviews being published by him under the rebranded series Fully Ramblomatic.

Ctrl+Alt+Del (CAD) is a gaming-related webcomic and animated series written by Tim Buckley. The name of the comic refers to the Windows command Control-Alt-Delete. Premiering on October 23, 2002, the comic's focus has gradually shifted away from single strip gags towards longer story arcs and greater continuity through the use of video game references. Ctrl+Alt+Del currently is updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Old Man Murray (OMM) is a UGO Networks computer game commentary and reviews site, known for its highly irreverent and satiric tone. Founded in 1997, it was written and edited by Chet Faliszek and Erik Wolpaw. Old Man Murray was critical of games that received strong reviews elsewhere, Common targets of OMM news updates included John Romero and American McGee. Founded in 2014 by entrepreneur Menashe Kestenbaum, the company owned the websites Destructoid and Escapist Magazine from 2014 to September 2022, as well the gaming convention Enthusiast Gaming Live Expo (EGLX). The company went public on the TSX Venture Exchange in October 2018. In January 2020, the company's listing moved to the Toronto Stock Exchange. In April 2021, the company also began trading on the Nasdaq. Enthusiast Gaming owns a number of websites and runs an annual convention in Toronto.

Second Wind is a video-based entertainment outlet focusing on video games and other forms of popular media. The group received significant media attention upon its formation, having been founded by former video team members of The Escapist media outlet, including Editor in Chief Nick Calandra and star talent Yahtzee Croshaw. The founding followed Calandra's firing on 6 November 2023 from The Escapist by parent company Gamurs. The group has been entirely fan funded, with over 14,000 patrons donating through the Patreon platform as of January 2024.
