Gan-ya Ben-gur Akselrod (born May 25, 1987) is an American-Israeli operatic soprano who made an international career.
Akselrod was born in Tel Aviv. [1] She studied at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Israel and at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in New York City.
She appeared in the U.S. at the Opera Moderne in New York City and the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado. She won the 2009 Buchman-Mehta singing competition in Tel Aviv. [2] She appeared at Carnegie Hall first in 2010. She made her debut in Europe at the 2011 Aix-en-Provence Festival. She performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2012. In 2013, she won the Internationaler Hilde-Zadek-Gesangswettbewerb , leading to her engagement at the Junges Ensemble of the Theater an der Wien for two years. [3]
Her roles first included Belinda in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas , the First Boy in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte , Despina in Così fan tutte , and Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro , [4] She performed the roles of Micaëla in Bizet's Carmen , the title role in Thaïs and Marfa in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride . At the Opera Moderne she appeared as the Bubikopf in Victor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis . She performed at the Wiener Kammeroper, the second house of the Theater an der Wien, as Tamiri in Leonardo Vinci Semiramide . She appeared as Clorinde in Rossini's La Cenerentola at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, [3] followed by Servilia in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito , and a solo recital.

Kurt Julian Weill was a German-born American composer active from the 1920s in his native country, and in his later years in the United States. He was a leading composer for the stage who was best known for his fruitful collaborations with Bertolt Brecht. With Brecht, he developed productions such as his best-known work, The Threepenny Opera, which included the ballad "Mack the Knife". Weill held the ideal of writing music that served a socially useful purpose, Gebrauchsmusik. He also wrote several works for the concert hall and a number of works on Jewish themes. He became a United States citizen in 1943.
Lotte Lenya was an Austrian-American singer, diseuse, and actress, long based in the United States. In the German-speaking and classical music world, she is best remembered for her performances of the songs of her first husband, Kurt Weill. In English-language cinema, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as a jaded aristocrat in The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (1961). She also played the murderous and sadistic Rosa Klebb in the James Bond movie From Russia with Love (1963).
The "Alabama Song"—also known as "Moon of Alabama", "Moon over Alabama", and "Whisky Bar"—is an English version of a song written by Bertolt Brecht and translated from German by his close collaborator Elisabeth Hauptmann in 1925 and set to music by Kurt Weill for the 1927 play Little Mahagonny. It was reused for the 1930 opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and has been recorded by the Doors and David Bowie.
Karin Shifrin is an Israeli mezzo-soprano opera singer. She regularly performs in Israel and Europe. Since the age of 24, she sang in concerts with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and with the Teatro Comunale di Bologna orchestra, as well as other orchestras. Shifrin has been performing in the Israeli opera since 2005.
The Seven Deadly Sins is a satirical ballet chanté in seven scenes composed by Kurt Weill to a German libretto by Bertolt Brecht in 1933 under a commission from Boris Kochno and Edward James. It was translated into English by W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman and more recently by Michael Feingold. It was the last major collaboration between Weill and Brecht.

Ella Milch-Sheriff is an Israeli composer, winner of ACUM award for lifetime achievfment (2022). Born in Haifa, Israel, Milch-Sheriff began her career as a composer at the age of 12. During her military service she composed, performed and interpreted her own songs after which she returned to classical music studying composition under the direction of Professor Tzvi Avni and graduating in composition from the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University.

Alen Hodzovic is a German actor and singer. In 2009, he became the first German citizen to win First Prize at Kurt Weill Foundation's international Lotte Lenya Competition for singers. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London where he won the H.L. Hammond Prize for Verse Speaking, adjudicated by director John Caird. He played Raoul in the Stuttgart production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera and Ken in a German-language production of John Logan's play Red. In 2007, he appeared as a background singer for Elton John at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium.

Bertlies "Lys" Symonette was a German-American pianist, chorus singer and musical stage performer. In 1945 she took a job as rehearsal pianist, coach, understudy or multi-tasking "swing-girl" for The Firebrand of Florence, a Kurt Weill musical making its Broadway debut. This proved to be the start of a new career as Weill's musical assistant: from that point a principal focus of her professional life was on the composer and, more particularly after his early death in 1950, the career of his widow, the stage performer Lotte Lenya. When Lenya died, in 1981, Lys Symonette was appointed vice-president of the Kurt Weill Foundation, also serving as its "musical executive". When she died her friend and frequent collaborator, Prof. Kim H. Kowalke, published an affectionate tribute in which he described her as "the last and irreplaceable link to the inner artistic circle of Weill and Lenya".

Gold Career Grant from Merola Opera Program, the 2015 International Hilde Zadek Competition in Vienna and the 2015 Sedat Gürel- Güzin Gürel International Voice Competition in Istanbul. Bryce-Davis has been acclaimed across Europe and North America for her portrayals of Verdi roles such as Eboli, Azucena, and Preziosilla, as well as bel canto heroines such as Leonora from Donizetti's La Favorite and Sara in Roberto Devereux. In concert, solo highlights include performances of Verdi's Requiem at Carnegie Hall with the Oratorio Society of New York with Maestro Kent Tritle, Verdi's Requiem with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Kent Nagano, Elgar's Sea Pictures at the Vienna Musikverein with Maestro Jun Märkl, and a Grammy Nominated performance of Pulitzer Prize winning Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell's Sanctuary Road.
Anna Igorevna Nekhames is a Russian operatic soprano who has made an international career. She has been based since 2022 at the Oper Frankfurt, where she performed the coloratura soprano roles of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and the exceptionally difficult dual role of Venus and Chief of the Gepopo in Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre.
