Garelick Farms, a subsidiary of Dean Foods, is a manufacturer of dairy products in the Northeastern United States. [1] [2] [3] Founded in 1931, it remained owned by the Garelick family and descendants until 1997, when it was purchased by Suiza Foods, which acquired Dean Foods in 2001. [1] [2] [4]

Production

Garelick Farms processes and manufactures dairy products such as milk, cream, ice cream, sour cream, cottage cheese and juices. [2] It has four manufacturing plants in Massachusetts, Maine, and New York, and purchases raw milk from approximately 1,000 local dairies in the region. [5] It is among the largest regional dairies in the United States, and is the largest dairy east of the Mississippi River. [4] [2] In 2006, Garelick Farms processed over a half-million gallons of milk each day. [2]

Garelick Farms' operations included 17 plastic bottle manufacturing facilities located from Texas to Maine. [6] This was later consolidated into a subsidiary company by Suiza Foods, which was named Franklin Plastics, Inc. [6] In May 2018, Garelick Farms informed its employees that the plant in Lynn, Massachusetts would be closing. [7]

Louis Trauth Dairy was founded in 1920 by the senior Louis Trauth. It was based in Newport, Kentucky, USA. It began from a 600-square-foot (56 m2) plant and competed with 54 other dairies in the Greater Cincinnati area. It had a modern facility covering five city blocks. There had been three multimillion-dollar expansions since 1985 to provide more efficient production and distribution of dairy products. Trauth Dairy was one of the first dairies in the area to vacuum pasteurize milk, and the first in Cincinnati to introduce tamper-evident packaging for sour cream, cottage cheese and dips. Trauth Dairy was the sole manufacturer of Fat Free plus a/B milk.

It has been a subsidiary of HP Hood LLC since being purchased by the company in 2004, which is headquartered in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Products provided by the company include milk, half and half, cream, cottage cheese, sour cream and yogurt. The original plant located on Conklin Avenue in Binghamton manufactured these dairy products until the acquisition by HP Hood, when certain Crowley Foods items began to be made at facilities elsewhere which were better equipped. Production at the plant ceased altogether in 2012, but the warehouse and distribution center continued to be used until 2014.
