Gargi Raina is an Indian painter who lives and works in Vadodara, Gujarat. [1] [2]

Early life

Gargi's family is originally from Kashmir and later settled in Lahore and then during Partition of India, they moved to Delhi. [3] She was born in New Delhi in 1961 and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from The College of Arts, New Delhi in 1985. She further went on to get a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1988. [1] [2]

Career

Gargi was awarded the 2002 Residency at Taipei Artists Village in Taiwan. She is represented by Bodhi Art, Gallery Threshold and Palette Art Gallery. She has also participated in Lo Real Maravilloso: Marvelous Reality, 20 Year Celebration of Gallery Espace at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, 2009. [2]

She uses gouache and dry pastels on paper and wood, and works in sequences which follow a narrative, linear in the way it reads but elastic in the way that it enables the user to comprehend and examine the artwork. [4]

She says, "I've been working with the idea of stretching time. It's like seeing something in slow motion or looking at one thing and stretching that time, being able to go backwards and forwards and doing it at a very, very slow pace. I think that has been very crucial to a lot of the work that I have been doing recently." [4] [5]

She has conducted several workshops in Gorlesborg, Sweden, the Max Mueller Bhawan in Chennai, the Khoj International Artists Workshop in Modinagar and Srinagar, South Asian Women's Peace Workshop in Lahore, Pakistan organised by Salima Hashmi and workshop at Zenana Mahal in Udaipur Palace in Rajasthan. Haku Vajubhai Shah was an Indian painter, Gandhian, cultural anthropologist and author on folk and tribal art and culture. His art belonged to the Baroda Group and his works are considered in the line of artists who brought themes of folk or tribal art to Indian art.

Sosa Joseph is an Indian contemporary artist living in Kochi, Kerala. She is considered an important exponent of the contemporary female art in Kerala, India.

Riyas Komu

Riyas Komu born in Kerala is a critically acclaimed multimedia artist and curator based in Mumbai. He has invested his time in art education and developing art infrastructure in India. Komu's works are inspired by social conflicts and political movements and topics like migration and displacement. His hyper-realistic oil portraits of people resemble socialist-realist propaganda art and indeed one of his portraits is strikingly titled “Why Everybody should Look Like Mao”. In 2007, Komu was one of two artists from India selected for the 52nd Venice Biennale by curator Robert Storr. Later, he went on to represent the Iranian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015. Komu also participated in the Jogja Biennale, Indonesia, 2011. Riyas born in 1971 in a small town in Thrissur District of Kerala. He lives and works in Mumbai.

Bose Krishnamachari

Bose Krishnamachari is an internationally acclaimed Malayali painter and Artist-Curator based in Mumbai, India. He was born in 1963 at Magattukara village near Angamaly, Kerala. He had done his early schooling at GHSS Puliyanam. He took his BFA from Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai in (1991), and then completed his MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in(2000). He was a recipient of the award of the Kerala Lalita Kala Akademi(1985), British Council travel award (1993), Mid America Arts Alliance Award(1996), Chales Wallace India Trust Award (1999–2000), Life Time Fellowship Award- Kerala Lalita Kala Academy and was first runner up for the Bose Pacia Prize for Modern Art, New York, 2001. His work comprises vivid abstract paintings, figurative drawings, sculpture, photography, multimedia installations and architecture. Since 1985 he lives and works in Mumbai. Bose is the founder member and President of Kochi Biennale Foundation and Biennale Director of international exhibition of contemporary art, Kochi-Muziris Biennale.

Latika Katt is an Indian sculptor who specializes in stone carving, metal casting and bronze sculpting. She is notable for winning the Beijing Art Biennale Award for her bronze work titled "Makar Sankranti at Dashawmeth Ghat, Varanasi.

Nilima Sheikh is a visual artist based in Baroda, India. Since the mid-80s, Sheikh has done extensive research about traditional art forms in India, advocated for the sustainability of the practice of traditional painters, and used a wide range of visual and literary sources in her work. Her work focuses on displacement, longing, historical lineage, tradition, communal violence, and the ideas of femininity. She uses paper, painting, installation, large scrolls, theater set designs, as well as illustrations for children's books. She started exhibiting her work in 1969 and has participated in numerous group exhibitions, most recently documenta 14, Athens and Kassel in 2017. Her first museum exhibition was organized by The Art Institute of Chicago in 2014.

Vasudha Thozhur is an interdisciplinary artist, focusing mainly on painting. She is currently a professor in the Department of Art and Performing Art in Shiv Nadar University, Noida. She has also collaborated with Himmat, an activist organisation based in Vatva, Ahmedabad, an organisation that works with the survivors of the Gujarat Riots.

Jayant Parikh

Jayant Parikh is an Indian artist, printmaker, and muralist. He is a student of N. S. Bendre, K. G. Subramanyan and Sankho Chaudhuri. He lives and works in Vadodara, India.

The Baroda Group refers to the artists involved with the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, now known as Vadodara in Gujarat state of India. An experimental art school that drew artists of a variety of backgrounds, the Baroda Group offered an alternative to the nationalism associated with Santiniketan and the Bengal School.

Jyotsna Bhatt Indian ceramicist

Jyotsna Jyoti Bhatt was an Indian ceramist and potter. She first studied at and then for forty years taught at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
