Gary Manchel (born November 29, 1962) is an American basketball coach who is the current head coach of the Mercyhurst Lakers men's basketball team. [1]
Growing up in South Burlington, Vermont, Manchel played high school basketball at South Burlington High School. The son of a University of Vermont professor, Manchel enrolled at UVM, where he was a member of its men's basketball team from 1982 to 1985 under Bill Whitmore, appearing in 27 games. After graduation, Manchel served as an assistant coach at Slippery Rock for two seasons before joining the coaching staff at Yale under Dick Kuchen for five seasons. [7] In 1992, Manchel would become the head coach at then-Division II UMass Lowell, where he replaced Stan Van Gundy, who coached Manchel while he was an assistant at Vermont. [4] While coach of the River Hawks, Manchel compiled a 131–125 overall record, including a NCAA Division II tournament appearance in 2001, a season in which he was named NE-10 Coach of the Year. In 2001, Manchel would join Tim O'Shea's staff at Ohio for a pair of seasons before taking the head coaching position a Mercyhurst. [10] [11] In 21 seasons at the helm, Manchel has guided the Lakers to seven NCAA Division II tournament appearances, reaching the Elite Eight in 2019. [12] On February 7, 2024, Manchel notched his 500th career win as a head coach. [13]

Tom Brennan is a radio and television sportscaster and former men's basketball head coach at the University of Vermont from 1986 to 2005.
The Mercyhurst Lakers men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association hockey team that represents Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania under Head Coach Rick Gotkin. The team is currently a Division I hockey team playing out of the Mercyhurst Ice Center located on the school campus. The Mercyhurst Lakers started out as a club sport at the school, moving up to Division III, followed by Division II, and now plays in Division I in Atlantic Hockey America, formed shortly after the 2023–24 season by the merger of the Lakers' former home, the Atlantic Hockey Association, with College Hockey America. After joining their step up into Division I in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 1998, the Lakers have won their conference tournament making NCAA tournament appearances in 2001, 2003, and 2005.
John Michael Gallagher is the head men's basketball coach at Manhattan College. He previously served as the head coach at the University of Hartford from 2010 until 2022.
John Becker is an American college basketball coach, currently the head coach of the Vermont Catamounts of the America East Conference. He replaced Mike Lonergan, who left to become the coach at George Washington University.
The UMass Lowell River Hawks are the NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics teams representing the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Lowell, Massachusetts, United States. Members of the America East Conference for all sports. UMass Lowell sponsors teams in seven men's and seven women's NCAA sanctioned sports. Prior to transitioning to Division I in 2013, the River Hawks competed in the Northeast-10 Conference in Division II.

They finished the season 27–7, 14–2 in America East play to win the regular season championship. They defeated Maine, Binghamton, and UMBC to be champions of the America East tournament. They earned the America East's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round to Florida State.

They defeated UMass Lowell and Stony Brook to advance to the championship game of the America East tournament vs Vermont. However, the championship game, and all postseason tournaments, were cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

They played their home games at the Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion in West Hartford, Connecticut and were led by 11th-year head coach John Gallagher. They finished the season 15-9, 8-6 in America East Play to finish in 4th place. They defeated Binghamton, Albany, Vermont, and UMass Lowell to be champions the America East tournament. They received the America East’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the first time where they lost in the first round to Baylor.

The 2024–25 NCAA Division I men's basketball season will begin on November 4, 2024. The regular season will end on March 16, 2025, with the 2025 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament beginning with the First Four on March 18 and ending with championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio on April 7.
