Gary Sohmers, (born August 17, 1952) also known as the "King of Pop Culture", [1] is an American appraiser and fan convention producer, known for producing his NorthEast ComicCon & Collectibles Extravaganza, a Pop Culture Expo. He is widely known as an appraiser of collectibles, pop culture items, and toys on the PBS television series Antiques Roadshow (American TV program), [2] [3] and is recognized by his long gray ponytail, and preference of Aloha shirts and orange Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers. Background

Gary Sohmers attained his love of collecting from his father who collected campaign buttons. [6] At the age of eight, he began selling his toys at garage sales, and took an interest in learning the relevance and history of the items. [7] [8]

Sohmers was influenced also by his father's love for songwriting. [9] He formed the first incarnation of his rock 'n' roll band, Windjammer in the 1970s. [10] Sohmers recruited an array of musicians who performed in other local Madison bands including Jeff Walker of Spooner (band), Robert Julius Corbit of The Waves, Paul “Radar” Schoeder of The Rousers, Gil Jevne of Punch, and Dave Gochberg of Task Force. [11]

In 1983, Sohmers recorded an original song co-written with Geno Barone, with Garbage (band) musicians Butch Vig and Steve Marker entitled “Dinosaur Rock”. The audio was recorded at Smart Studios, in Madison, Wisconsin. [12] [13]

In 1979, Sohmers recorded the Windjammer EP (Extended play) at Pepperhead Studios in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. [14] The album consisted of songs he penned, featuring guitarist Scott Holmstrom, along with Schoeder, Gochberg, Jevne and some guest stars from other bands including Butch Vig in his first recording session for another artist other than his own band on the song “Blind,” and Art Baldocci and Greg Biela of Heartsfield on “Spinning My Wheels”. [15] Sohmers' song “Good Old Friend” was also recorded but not released on the EP. [16]

In 2017, Sohmers wrote Beasties: a Sci-fi Rock Opera, as a stage musical. Sohmers wrote the songs for the show. The concept record features vocals, instrumentation, and orchestration by Bill Holloman. [17] The concept record was released in early 2020 in the form of YouTube videos. Three books about the rock opera, written by Sohmers in 2017 from the viewpoint of different characters from the show, were published in 2020. [18]

Career

Sohmers opened his first collectibles shop in 1974 in Madison, Wisconsin. After his move to Massachusetts in 1984, he opened Wex Rex Collectibles in Hudson and eventually in Framingham selling toys, records, and rock and roll memorabilia. [19] [20] [21] The shop has since closed, and he is now the producer of the Pop Culture Expos held biannually in Massachusetts. The events have been held since 2014, with the objective of guiding the next generation toward careers in the creative arts. [22] Celebrity guests, cosplay, and panels are staples of the shows as well. [23] The March 2017 edition of his SouthCoast Comic Con was Batman (TV series) actor, Adam West's final public appearance before he died on June 9, 2017. [24] [25] [26]

In 1997, Sohmers made his first appearance on Antiques Roadshow in Rochester, New York. His first aired appraisal for the show was of an oil painting by musician Frank Zappa from 1960, which he valued at $15,000 to $25,000. [27] [28] Other notable appraisals by Sohmers that aired on the show include original Peanuts comic strip artwork, with an appraised value of $450,000; [29] a laugh track machine invented by Charles Douglass appraised at $10,000; [30] and a Beatles “Butcher Cover” album ranging in value somewhere between $10,000 and $12,000. Sohmers appeared as a guest on episode 17 of season 4 of the PBS Kids show Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman. The episode visits Brimfield, Massachusetts where he challenges two of the show's contestants to explore the Brimfield Antiques and Collectibles Show. [33] [34]

Sohmers also appeared as an expert appraiser on all six episodes of the VH1 television show For What It's Worth. [12] The show was hosted by Howard Stern Show radio personalities Gary Dell'Abate and Jon Hein, who appraise and showcase pop culture items throughout the show. [35]

<i>Antiques Roadshow</i> British television programme

Antiques Roadshow is a British television programme broadcast by the BBC in which antiques appraisers travel to various regions of the United Kingdom to appraise antiques brought in by local people. It has been running since 1979, based on a 1977 documentary programme. The programme has spawned versions in other countries with the same TV format, including Canada and the United States. As of 2021, it is in its 44th series and has been presented by Fiona Bruce since 2008.

<i>Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman</i> American animated television series

Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman is an American live-action/animated television series that aired on PBS Kids Go! and is largely targeted towards middle school children. It is a reality-game show that is hosted by an animated anthropomorphic dog named Ruff Ruffman who dispenses challenges to the show's real-life contestants. The series ran for five seasons and 100 episodes from May 29, 2006, to November 4, 2010, on PBS, with 30 contestants in that time. Although a sixth season was planned, with auditions taking place in January 2010, WGBH announced on June 14, 2010, that the series will end due to lack of funding. In June 2008, the series received its first Emmy for Best Original Song for its theme.

Rudy Franchi

Rudy Franchi is a writer and editor on film theory and film criticism and an antiques and collectibles expert. He helped to introduce the French critical protocol the "auteur theory" to the US. For several decades, Franchi also operated galleries that specialized in pop culture collectibles. In 1995, he began appearing as an appraiser on the PBS series, Antiques Roadshow, specializing in pop culture memorabilia.

Leigh and Leslie Keno

Leigh Ronald Keno and Leslie Bernard Keno are American antiquarians, authors, historic car judges, preservationists and television hosts. They specialize in stoneware, early American furniture and vintage automobiles. They are widely known as appraisers on the PBS series Antiques Roadshow, for favoring preservation of antiques over restoration and for their high-energy personalities.

The items are then sold at auction, where the antiquers compete for the highest profit, which is most often determined by the lowest loss.

The Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Series is an Emmy award given to television programming aimed towards children. Children's television has been recognized at the Emmys since the inaugural year. In 1995, a separate award for pre-school children's television was created. The two categories have been recognized since then. Starting in 2018, a distinction between children's series and educational series was created, resulting in two separate categories.

Alan Catello Grazioso American online producer & filmmaker

Alan Catello Grazioso is an American non-fiction filmmaker, multimedia expert, and online content producer. Grazioso oversaw content production for three PBS Kids television series including Zoom, Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman and Postcards from Buster, the last of which he was nominated for a 2008 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children Series. Grazioso's online video credits include "Lives on the Line: The Human Cost of Chicken", a web-based interactive project funded and published by Oxfam America which received a 2016 Webby Award Honoree achievement. In 2016, The Washington Post ran a two-minute online short film produced by Grazioso for Oxfam's "Lives on the Line" campaign and current affairs website AJ+ ran a separate social media targeted version.

NorthEast ComicCon & Collectibles Extravaganza

The Northeast Comic Con & Collectibles Extravaganzas are a series of triannual fan conventions in Massachusetts, United States. They were founded in 2014 by Gary Sohmers as an event for giving the next generation a chance to discover creative arts careers. Creative arts professionals who regularly attend the events include comic book artists/writers, puppeteers, mask makers, actors, voice actors and cartoonists.
