Lieutenant General Gavan John Reynolds, AO is a retired senior officer in the Australian Army who is the Commissioner of the Australian Border Force since 2024. He joined the army via the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1985 and has spent much of his career in military intelligence. He has commanded the 1st Intelligence Battalion (2004–05) and the 6th Combat Support Brigade (2013–15),and deployed on operations to the Persian Gulf,Lebanon and Syria,Iraq,and Afghanistan. He served as Head Military Strategic Plans from 2019 to 2020,before being appointed as the inaugural Chief of Defence Intelligence in July 2020.
Reynolds entered the Royal Military College,Duntroon as an Australian Army officer cadet in July 1985. [1] Following graduation in 1987,Reynolds was appointed a troop commander in the 16th Air Defence Regiment,Royal Australian Artillery. During the Gulf War,he deployed to the Persian Gulf in command of an RBS 70 detachment aboard HMAS Success. [2] [3] He subsequently served as aide-de-camp to the Chief of Army,S2 (intelligence officer) in the 3rd Brigade,an analyst in the Defence Intelligence Organisation,a tactics instructor at the Land Warfare Centre in Canungra,Queensland,and deployed to Syria and Lebanon as a military observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization. Reynolds commanded the 1st Intelligence Battalion from 2004 to 2005 and,following promotion to colonel in 2007,deployed as J2 in the Australian Joint Task Force in Iraq. Following his return to Australia,Reynolds served as Director of Officer Career Management –Army and later as Commander Career Management –Army. [2] [4] In recognition of his "exceptional service" to intelligence and career management in these roles,Reynolds was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2010 Queen's Birthday Honours. [5]
Reynolds attended the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies in 2010 and,in September,was promoted brigadier and deployed to Afghanistan with the Headquarters International Security Assistance Force. He returned to Australia as Director General Personnel –Army from June 2011 to December 2012,before attending the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom in 2013. Reynolds commanded the 6th Combat Support Brigade from September 2013 to October 2015 and,on promotion to major general,was appointed the Australian Military Representative to NATO and the EU from 2016 to 2018. [2] [4] He was next appointed Head Military Strategic Plans in the Vice Chief of Defence Force Group from January 2019. [2]
In June 2020 the Minister for Defence,Senator Linda Reynolds,announced the creation of the Defence Intelligence Group (DIG) to unify and provide greater coordination to intelligence capabilities in the Australian Defence Force. The DIG includes oversight for the Defence Intelligence Organisation and the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation. Reynolds was promoted lieutenant general and appointed the inaugural Chief of Defence Intelligence,responsible for the DIG,in July 2020. [6] [7]
Reynolds was advanced to Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his "exceptional leadership in successive significant appointments";namely as Australian Military Representative to NATO,Head Military Strategic Plans,and Chief of Defence Intelligence. On 10 November 2024,Reynolds was sworn in as the third Commissioner of the Australian Border Force,taking over from Michael Outram. [10] [11]
Reynolds is married and has two children. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography with Honours,a Master of Defence Studies,and a Master of Business Administration. [2] [4]
Lieutenant General Sir Reginald George Pollard,was a senior commander in the Australian Army. He served as Chief of the General Staff from 1960 to 1963.
Major General Timothy Joseph McOwan,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He served as Special Operations Commander Australia from February 2008 until January 2011,and the Australian Defence Attachéand Head Australian Defence Staff in Washington,D.C. He retired from the army in 2014.
General Sir John Gordon Noel Wilton,was a senior commander in the Australian Army. He served as Chief of the General Staff (CGS),the Army's professional head,from 1963 until 1966,and as Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (CCOSC),forerunner of the role of Australia's Chief of the Defence Force,from 1966 until 1970. His eight-year tenure as senior officer of first the Army and then the Australian military spanned almost the entire period of the nation's involvement in the Vietnam War.
Major General Richard Gary Wilson,AO is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He served as Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation from 2009 to 2011,and Chairman of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority in the wake of the 2010–11 Queensland floods.
Martyn John Dunne,is a retired New Zealand Army officer,a diplomat and senior public servant. He was the chief executive of the Ministry for Primary Industries. From 2011 until 2013 he was New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia based in Canberra. He was Comptroller of Customs and Chief Executive of the New Zealand Customs Service (2004–2011) after a career as soldier in the New Zealand Army from 1970 ending his military career in 2004 as Commander Joint Forces New Zealand with the rank of major general. In September 1999,Dunne led the New Zealand Force East Timor during New Zealand's largest deployment since World War II,and as the Senior National Officer and,with the rank of brigadier,commanded the Dili Command,an operational formation in the International Force East Timor,until 2000.
Lieutenant General John Graham Caligari,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He served as Chief Capability Development Group from October 2014 until his retirement in August 2015.
Major General Peter Warwick "Gus" Gilmore,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. A graduate of the Royal Military College,Duntroon,he was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1983 and spent much of his career in special forces. He commanded the Special Air Service Regiment (2001–02),led the first contingent of the Australian Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan (2001–02),was responsible for the Coalition Advisory Support Team in Iraq (2005–06),and commanded International Security Assistance Force Special Operations Forces (2009–10). Following promotion to major general he held a succession of senior appointments,including Special Operations Commander Australia (2011–13),Deputy Chief of Army (2013–15),and Commander Forces Command (2015–16). His final appointment was as Head Military Strategic Commitments Division from 2016 to 2019.
Major General Paul Bruce Symon,is a retired senior Australian Army officer and public servant. He served as Deputy Chief of Army from 2009 to 2011,Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation from 2011 to 2014 and,following his retirement from the army,was Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service from 18 December 2017 to 20 February 2023.
Lieutenant General Gregory Charles Bilton,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1983 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Artillery. He commanded the 104th Field Battery,4th Field Regiment and 7th Brigade,and deployed on operations to the Sinai and Afghanistan. He was seconded to the United States Army Pacific as Deputy Commanding General –Operations from 2014 to 2017,served as Deputy Chief of Joint Operations from 2017 to 2018,and was Commander Forces Command from December 2018 to June 2019. His final appointment was as Chief of Joint Operations,from July 2019 to July 2024.

Lieutenant General John James Frewen,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Royal Military College,Duntroon and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1986. He has commanded the 2nd Battalion,Royal Australian Regiment (2003–04),Combined Task Force 635 (2003),the 1st Brigade (2012–14),Military Strategic Commitments Division (2014–16) and Joint Task Force 633 (2017–18),and deployed on operations to Rwanda,the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. He was appointed Principal Deputy Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate in March 2018,and Coordinator General of the National COVID Vaccine Taskforce in June 2021. Major General Roger John Noble,is a retired senior Australian Army officer and diplomat. He joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1984 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. He commanded the 2nd Cavalry Regiment,Al Muthanna Task Group (2005) and the 3rd Brigade (2013–15),and deployed six times on operations to East Timor,Afghanistan and Iraq. He was seconded to the United States Army in 2016 and served as Deputy Coalition Land Force Commander,Iraq,as part of Operation Inherent Resolve,and subsequently as Deputy Commanding General –North in the United States Army Pacific (2017–19). He retired from the Australian Army in 2021 and served as Australian Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism from February 2021 to February 2023,before joining Laing O'Rourke as General Manager –Defence.
Major General Christopher Antony Field,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1984 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He has commanded the 1st Battalion,Royal Australian Regiment (2003–05),Combined Joint Task Force 635 (2004–05) and the 3rd Brigade (2015–17),coordinated reconstruction efforts in Queensland in the wake of the 2010–11 Queensland floods and Cyclone Debbie,and deployed on operations to East Timor,Iraq,the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. He was Commander Forces Command from June 2019 to February 2020,Deputy Commanding General –Operations for United States Army Central from March 2020 to November 2021,and was Assistant to the Chief of the Defence Force from 2022 until his retirement in 2023.
Major General Jeffery John Sengelman,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Officer Cadet School,Portsea in 1980,was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and spent much of his military career in special forces. He commanded the 4th Battalion,Royal Australian Regiment (Commando) (2000–01) and the 6th Brigade (2010–11),deployed on operations to East Timor and Iraq,and served as Commander Forces Command in 2011,Deputy Chief of Army from 2011 to 2012,Head of Modernisation and Strategic Planning –Army from 2012 to 2014,and Special Operations Commander Australia from 2014 until his retirement in 2017.
Major General John Curtis Hartley,is an Australian defence and intelligence strategist and a retired officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1962,was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and spent much of his career in military intelligence. He twice deployed on operations during the Vietnam War,during which he was Mentioned in Despatches on two occasions and seriously wounded,and commanded the Albury–Wodonga Military Area and the Army Apprentices' School (1984–87). He served as General Officer Commanding Training Command (1991–92),Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation (1992–95),Deputy Chief of Army (1995–98),and Land Commander Australia (1998–00). Since his retirement from the army in 2000,Hartley has been involved in community and veterans' organisations and is an active contributor to discussion on defence and strategic issues.
Major General Justin Frederick Ellwood,,commonly known as Jake Ellwood,is a retired senior officer of the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1989 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He commanded the 5th Battalion,Royal Australian Regiment (2006–08),Overwatch Battle Group (West) (2007),Battle Group Tiger (2008) and the Combat Training Centre,and deployed on operations to Kosovo,East Timor,Iraq and Afghanistan. He served as Deputy Chief of Army from May to December 2018,and commanded the 1st Division from December 2018 to November 2021.
Lieutenant General Susan May Coyle,is a senior officer in the Australian Army. She joined the army as a reservist in 1987 and,following training at the Australian Defence Force Academy,was commissioned into the Royal Australian Corps of Signals in 1992. She has commanded the 104th Signal Squadron (2003–04),17th Signal Regiment (2009–10),Task Group Afghanistan (2015) and the 6th Combat Support Brigade (2017–19),and has deployed on operations to East Timor,the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. She was appointed Commander Joint Task Force 633,with responsibility for all Australian operations in the Middle East,from January to November 2020. She was the first woman to command the task force,which had oversight for 1,200 personnel under Operation Accordion. Coyle was Head Information Warfare from January 2021 to November 2022,Commander Forces Command from November 2022 to June 2024,and assumed the role of Chief of Joint Capabilities in July 2024.
Lieutenant General Simon Andrew Stuart,is a senior officer of the Australian Army who has served as the Chief of Army since July 2022. He was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps from the Royal Military College,Duntroon in 1990. He has commanded the 8th/9th Battalion,Royal Australian Regiment (2008–10),Joint Task Force 631 (2010) and Combined Team Uruzgan (2012–13),and deployed to East Timor as part of Operations Warden,Tanager and Astute and to Afghanistan and the Sinai Peninsula. He was Force Commander,Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai from 2017 to 2019,and Head Land Capability from 2020 to 2022. He succeeded Lieutenant General Rick Burr as Chief of Army on 2 July 2022.
Major General Cheryl Ann Pearce,is a senior officer in the Australian Army and a former deputy commissioner in the Australian Border Force. She graduated from the Officer Cadet School,Portsea and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police in 1985. She has commanded the Defence Police Training Centre (2003),1st Military Police Battalion (2006–08),Task Group Afghanistan (2016) and Australian Defence Force Academy (2017–18). Pearce has served on operations in East Timor and Afghanistan,and was Force Commander,United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus from January 2019 to January 2021. Pearce retired from full-time service in the army following her return from Cyprus and was appointed Deputy Commissioner Ports and Enforcement in the Australian Border Force in August 2021. She returned to the army in June 2023,on being appointed Deputy Chief of Army. She has been seconded to the United Nations since January 2024,serving as Deputy Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations.
Major General Wade Bradley Stothart,is a senior officer in the Australian Army. He joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1987 and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He has commanded the 3rd Battalion,Royal Australian Regiment (2007–09),ANZAC Battle Group (2008) and Combined Team Uruzgan (2013),and deployed on operations to Bosnia and Herzegovina,Timor-Leste as part of Operations Tanager and Astute,and to Afghanistan and Kuwait. He was appointed Head People Capability in December 2021.
