Gbenga Omotoso (born November 11, 1961) is a journalist, writer and columnist. He was the editor at The Nation newspaper until he was appointed as the Commissioner in charge of the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy. He was sworn in 2019 by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. [1] [2] [3] [4] . His tenure ended in 2023 after the first term of Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu. He was re-appointed as the commissioner for information and strategy and sworn in 2023 by the governor [5]

Early life

Omotoso was born on November 11, 1961. He is from Osun State, South West, Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Benin in 1984 where he received his B.A. in English and Literature. He proceeded with a Masters in Public and International Affairs at the University of Lagos, Akoka, which he completed in 2007. [4] [6]

Career

Omotoso has spent 35 years in the media. He started as a trainee sub-editor at The Guardian newspaper. He later became the deputy editor of Guardian Express from where he rose to become the Editor of the Saturday Guardian. In 1999, at the inception of the Comet newspaper, he was appointed the pioneer editor of the newspaper.

In 2006 he again became the pioneer editor of The Nation newspaper. He has maintained a column "Editorial Notebook" in The Nation, where he writes on topical issues using humor to present serious issues. [7] He is a member of Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) and member of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). [8]

He is a great lover of sports, particularly table tennis. He showed his skills in an exhibition against the world's 20th best table tennis player, Aruna Quadri, and reportedly did not play like an amateur. [9]

Awards

Omotoso has received many awards for excellence in media practice. The awards include the DAME Award in 2010, Nigeria Media Merit Award Editor of the Year in 2013, Nigeria Media Merit Award Editor of the Year in 2015, and Nigeria Media Merit Award Editor of the Year in 2017. [6]

Lagos Rail Mass Transit is a rapid transit system in Lagos State. The rail system is managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). The railway equipment including electric power, signals, rolling stock, and fare collection equipment will be provided by the private sector under a concession contract. LAMATA is responsible for policy direction, regulation, and infrastructure for the network. The first section of the network, Phase I of the Blue Line, was originally planned to be completed in 2011, though the construction has suffered many delays caused by shortage of funds and change of government. The Blue Line opened on September 4, 2023 and the Red Line opened on February 29, 2024.

The Fourth Mainland Bridge is a 38 km long bridge project by the Lagos State Government, Nigeria, connecting Lagos Island by way of Langbasa(Lekki) and Baiyeku(Ikorodu) across the Lagos Lagoon to Itamaga, in Ikorodu. The bridge is a 2 × 4 lane carriageway cross-sectional road with permission for BRT Lane and future road contraction. It is expected to become the second longest Bridge in Africa, featuring 3 toll plazas, 9 interchanges, 4.5 km Lagoon Bridge and an eco-friendly environment amongst other added features. The idea was conceptualized by the government of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State. Construction was planned to commence in 2017, 50 years after the state's establishment and 26 years after the completion of the Third Mainland Bridge by the ex-military President Ibrahim Babangida and was expected to be completed by 2019, but construction has not been started as of November 2023. The project was to cost the state an estimated sum of ₦844 billion in the 2017 budget. In September 2020, the Lagos State Government proposed another sum of $2.2 billion for the construction. 800 houses are expected to be demolished as against the 4,000 earlier marked for demolition in the previous design that was realigned.

The 2019 Lagos gubernatorial election was conducted on 9 March to choose the Governor of Lagos State. The election was held concurrently with various state level elections. Incumbent APC Governor Akinwunmi Ambode lost to the APC flag bearer Babajide Sanwo-Olu at a direct primary election in October 2018 and hence ineligible to run for second term under APC. Babajide Sanwo-Olu won in a landslide against Jimi Agbaje of the PDP who had previously run unsuccessfully for Lagos state governor twice. From 1999, Lagos state has been governed by AD, AC, then ACN, three parties which subsequently formed part of the coalition that birthed the APC in 2013.

He was with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research in Lagos when he was appointed Commissioner by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2019. Following the reported index case of COVID-19 in Lagos in March 2020, Abayomi was appointed to lead the response against the virus in the Africa's largest commercial city. On 24 August 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19 and recovered on 31 August 2020.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, is the 15th Oniru of Iruland. He was born to late Chief Taoreed Lawal Akapo, the Ojora of Lagos (1977-1993) and Olori Muinat Olabisi Abeni Ajasa. He is from the Ojora, Aromire, Shokun and Abisogun branch of Oniru royal families of Lagos State. He became the 15th Oniru of Iruland on 7 June 2020 after the death of Oba Idowu Oniru in September 2019. He was presented with the staff of Office by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on 7 June. 2020. Prior to his enthronement, he was the Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos State.

The Lagos state Task force against Human Trafficking is a Nigerian task force established by the Lagos state Government to tackle human trafficking and irregular migration. The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the state task force on human trafficking at the Government house on the 8th September 2020, with the overall objective of coordinating a multi-sectoral response towards the prevention of human trafficking, offering access to justice for victims of trafficking, prosecution of traffickers and enhancing the process of successful restoration of survivors to the state of physical, psycho-social, vocational and economic well-being. This task force is currently being replicated in other south western states of Nigeria.

Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards is an annual award organized by Vanguard (Newspapers) to honour distinguished Nigerians who have excelled in their chosen careers. The event premiered between 2007 and 2008 as the Bankers' award. It was on hold for four years until 2012, when it was re-introduced and rebranded as Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards. In 2022, the event celebrated its 10th edition in Lagos, Nigeria. Past recipients of the award include; Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Adegboyega Oyetola, Godwin Obaseki, Abdullahi Sule, Rotimi Akeredolu, and Afe Babalola.
