Geoffrey Sauer (born 1968 in Bloomington, Indiana) is an American new media theorist who researches technologies including open source software and collaborative multimedia development in the context of the history of publishing. He is the director of the open-access electronic text archive the EServer [ citation needed ], an electronic text archive, which was, according to Alexa, the most popular website in the arts and humanities in 2007. [1] He is the director of the Studio for New Media at Iowa State University [ citation needed ], as well as an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Professional Communication in the Department of English at ISU.

Education

Sauer attended the University of Notre Dame's Honors Program[ citation needed ]. In 1990 he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to study at Carnegie Mellon University and in 1998 received a PhD in English—Literary and Cultural Theory, [2] with a dissertation about miscommunication between employees and managers in 1990s Internet projects, and its origins in British and French publishing history.[ citation needed ]

While he was at Carnegie Mellon, he was a founding member (and later, director) of the English Server (later the EServer), which he led to publish writings in arts and humanities free of charge online[ citation needed ].

In 1998 he received a postdoctoral fellowship at CMU [ citation needed ]. In 2000 he took a faculty position at the University of Washington-Seattle. [3] In 2003 he moved to the Rhetoric and Professional Communication program at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. [4]

Scholarship

Sauer's scholarly research examines how material circumstances from the history of publishing have both hampered and facilitated contemporary open-access publishing ventures[ citation needed ].

Sauer has argued that U.S. publishing is dominated by interests that are decreasingly interested in publishing books that won't sell a lot of copies greatly reducing academic book choices in the sciences and humanities and leading to increasing commodification of academic knowledges. [5]

He has written about professional writing, [6] arguing for the historic increase of openness in a range of workplace communication practices, and the increasing importance of open, database-driven, professional resources.

Raymond Keith Gilyard is a writer and American professor of English who teaches and researches in the fields of rhetoric, composition, literacy studies, sociolinguistics, and African American literature. Interested in the complex interplay among race, ethnicity, language, writing, and politics, his primary interest lies in identifying intersections of African American English and composing practices. Advocating African American English as a legitimate discourse, Gilyard has been a prominent voice in the movement to recognize ethnic and cultural discourses other than Standard English as valid. As a literary scholar and creative writer, his interests have been in the interplay among African American literature, rhetorical criticism, and bio-critical work.

Collaborative pedagogy stems from the process theory of rhetoric and composition. Collaborative pedagogy believes that students will better engage with writing, critical thinking, and revision if they engage with others. Collaborative pedagogy pushes back against the Current-Traditional model of writing, as well as other earlier theories explaining rhetoric and composition; earlier theories of writing, especially current-traditional, emphasizes writing as a final product. In contrast, collaborative pedagogy rejects the notion that students think, learn, and write in isolation. Collaborative pedagogy strives to maximize critical thinking, learning, and writing skills through interaction and interpersonal engagement. Collaborative pedagogy also connects to the broader theory of collaborative learning, which encompasses other disciplines including, but not limited to, education, psychology, and sociology.

Dan Jones is a professor emeritus who taught a variety of technical communication courses in the Department of English at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida from 1983 to 2018. He retired in 2018. He is also a Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication. He earned his B.A., M.A. and PhD degrees from Florida State University in 1974, 1976 and 1979, respectively.

Cheryl E. Ball American educator and scholar (born 1948)

Cheryl Ball is an academic and scholar in rhetoric, composition, and publishing studies, and Director of the Digital Publishing Collaborative at Wayne State University. In the areas of scholarly and digital publishing, Ball is the executive director for the Council of Editors of Learned Journals and the Editor-in-Chief for the Library Publishing Curriculum. Ball also serves as co-editor of Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy, an open access, online journal dedicated to multimodal academic publishing, which she has edited since 2006. Ball's awards include Best Article on Pedagogy or Curriculum in Technical or Science Communication from the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the Computers and Composition Charles Moran Award for Distinguished Service to the Field, and the Technology Innovator Award presented by the CCCC Committee on Computers in Composition and Communication (7Cs). Her book, The New Work of Composing was the winner of the 2012 Computers and Composition Distinguished Book Award. Her contributions to academic research span the areas of digital publishing, new media scholarship, and multimodal writing pedagogy.
