George S Paul, also known as G. S. Paul (born 25 January 1947) is an Indian writer, essayist and music journalist. He was born to Rev. K. C. Samuel and Thankamma Samuel in Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.

Early life and education

After graduating in physics, Paul took a postgraduate diploma in journalism. He was professor and head of the physics department at Christ College, Irinjalakuda. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Career

Paul was a member of the senate in the University of Calicut from 1994 till 1998. He has contributed to the Hindu, Economic Times and Indian Express as an art and culture critic. He has written on music and classical performing art forms like Kathakali, Koodiyattam and Mohiniyattam since the 1980s. He has also authored Swarangalude Sasthram, Vasundhara and Odyssey of a Dancer. [8] He has been invited to present papers in various national seminars. He sat on the jury committee of Swathi puraskaram, Nrithya Natyapuraskaram, pallavur Appumarar puraskaram. He was an executive committee member of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi during the tenure of actor Murali as chairman. [9] He was also an executive committee member of Kerala Kalamandalam.

He was also adept in playing musical instruments like Chenda, Edakka and Thimila. His expertise in singing in the six degrees of geometric speed earned him the title Ṣaṭkāla. Marar is the name given to the caste of hereditary temple musicians of Travancore, Cochin and Malabar region in the state of Kerala, whose primary duty was to provide the traditional temple Sopanam music. They belong to the Ambalavasi caste.

Suresh K. Nair is an artist based in Banaras. Nair obtained his national diploma in mural painting from the Institute of Mural Painting Guruvayur, Kerala under the guidance of Mammiyur Krishnan Kuty Nair. He was inspired by the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinker Baij and continued his studies at the Department of Painting, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan. Nair has acquired a presence in the Indian and international art scene over the last decade with several shows organized by regional and international galleries and museums, and created many murals in India and abroad. Bharati Shivaji is an Indian classical dancer of Mohiniyattom, choreographer and author, known for her contributions to the art form by way of performance, research and propagation. She is the founder of Center for Mohiniyattam, a dance academy promoting Mohiniyattom and the co-author of two books, Art of Mohiniyattom and Mohiniyattom. She is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Sahitya Kala Parishad Samman. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2004, for her contributions to Indian classical dance.
