George Henry Taylforth (born 25 January 1941) is a British-born Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and 1970s. He played for Canterbury-Bankstown and Cronulla-Sutherland, notable for his long-range goal-kicking. He attended Sydney Boys High School playing alongside 1991 World Cup Winning Australia rugby union coach Bob Dwyer and premiership winning St. George Dragons rugby-league halfback George Evans (1962, 1963, 1964, 1965).^[1] He was also coached by former NSW rugby league representative Frank O'Rourke (rugby league) at school.^[2]

Playing career

Taylforth was graded to St. George in 1961 and played in three consecutive winning reserve-grade grand finals from 1962 to 1964 but he was unable to break into the first-grade side. In 1965, Taylforth moved to Canterbury and he was team captain in 1966.

St. George's run of eleven straight premierships came to an end in 1967 when Canterbury defeated them by 12–11 in the preliminary final. Taylforth contributed three goals to the Canterbury score. In the 1967 Grand Final, Canterbury lost to South Sydney 12–10, with Taylforth scoring eight of the ten points from four goals. In the 1967 season, Taylforth scored 204 points and became the first Canterbury player to score more than 200 points in one season.

Taylforth signed with Cronulla-Sutherland in 1970 and spent three seasons with the club. In his first season with the club, Taylforth once again scored more than 200 points – 202 – a record that stood for thirty years until Mat Rogers scored 212 points in the 2000 season.

Police career

Joining the New South Wales Police Force in 1960, Taylforth (as Detective Chief Inspector) went on to command the Gaming Squad in 1987. Taylforth was a witness at the ICAC's investigation into the Relationship Between Police and Criminals between 1992 and 1994.^[3] The Gaming Squad was disbanded in 1993 as a result of the commission's findings.

Brett Howland is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. He played for the Penrith Panthers in the National Rugby League competition. He previously played for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks but was forced out due to the salary cap. His position of choice was at wing, although he was also known to play at fullback.

Brent Sherwin is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer. Bearing the iconic nickname "Shifty", Sherwin plays in the Illawarra Carlton League which is an indirect feeder league to the St George Illawarra Dragons. He plays as a half-back. Sixteen clubs, including 14 from within the borders of New South Wales plus two from Queensland, competed for the J J Giltinan Shield during the season, which culminated in a grand final match for the Winfield Cup trophy between the Canberra Raiders and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

The 1988 NSWRL season was the 81st season of professional rugby league football in Australia, and saw the first expansion of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership outside the borders of New South Wales, and another expansion outside of Sydney, with the addition of three new teams: the Brisbane Broncos, Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast-Tweed Giants. The largest NSWRL premiership yet, sixteen clubs competed during the 1988 season, with the J J Giltinan Shield for minor premiers going to Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The finals culminated in a grand final for the Winfield Cup between the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Balmain Tigers. This season NSWRL teams also competed for the 1988 Panasonic Cup.

The 1967 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the 60th season of Sydney's professional rugby league football competition, Australia's first. The introduction of the Cronulla-Sutherland and Penrith clubs saw a total of twelve teams from across the Sydney area compete for the J.J. Giltinan Shield and WD & HO Wills Cup during the season, which culminated in a grand final between South Sydney and Canterbury-Bankstown. This was also the first live televised broadcast of a football grand final of any code in Australia.

Frank O'Rourke was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. He played at representative level for New South Wales, City and Other Nationalities, and at club level for University of Sydney and Leeds, as a wing or centre.

The 1999 Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks season was the 33rd in the club's history. They competed in the NRL's 1999 Telstra Premiership and despite losing in the preliminary final against St. George-Illawarra, the season was one of the most successful in the club's history after finishing with just their second minor premiership without dropping below equal first throughout the entire season. The club enjoyed record crowds as well as breaking the club record for most points and tries in a season. The club also equaled their biggest ever victory with a 46–0 thrashing of Western Suburbs as well as breaking their highest points tally in a match with the 56–18 defeat of North Sydney. David Peachey finished the season with 19 tries, which was also a record for the club. The club was coached by John Lang and captained by Andrew Ettingshausen while their major shirt sponsor was Pepsi.

Scott Sorensen is a New Zealand international rugby league footballer who plays as a second-row forward and lock for the Penrith Panthers in the NRL.
