George Willard Conable (1866-1933), AIA, was an American architect practicing in New York City in the early to mid 20th century specializing in churches.

Biography

George W. Conable was born in Cortland, New York on October 4, 1866. He graduated from Cortland State Normal School in 1886, and from Cornell University in 1890. [1]

In 1905 he was an assistant to noted architect Ernest Flagg and prepared plans and working drawings for the Singer Building. [2] His office was at 15 Myrtle Avenue, Jamaica, Queens in 1908, 46 West 24th Street in 1918. He entered into a brief partnership with Hobart Upjohn as the firm of Upjohn & Conable of 96 Fifth Avenue, New York, in 1911. [3] He is best known as the architect of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (New York City) (1908) and Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church (1926) [3]

He died in Tampa, Florida on January 2, 1933. [4]

Trinity Chapel, also known as St. John's Church and Beth-El Temple Church of God in Christ, is a historic Episcopal church at 1874 Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. It was built in 1858 to the design of architect Richard Upjohn (1802–1878). It is a frame Gothic Revival style chapel on a brick foundation and three bays wide by five bays long. It has a steeply pitched roof and sided in wood shingles. Atop the roof is a wooden belfry with steeply pitched pyramidal roof. It was founded as Trinity Chapel as a mission of Trinity Church in Hewlett, New York. Its name was changed to St. John's of Far Rockaway in 1881 when it became an independent parish. St. John's merged with Trinity Church in 1974 and the building was sold the following year to Beth-El Temple Church of God in Christ.

Trinity Lutheran Church is a historic Lutheran church at 31-18 37th Street in Astoria, Queens, New York. It was designed by John William Cresswell Corbusier and overseen by architect George W. Conable (1866–1933). It was built in 1926 and is a one-story Collegiate Gothic style building. It is constructed of brick faced with coursed rubble aplite trimmed in cast stone. The front elevation features a recessed entry with a large window above, framed by two spires with ornate turrets. The interior is in a Gothic plan of nave and transepts.

It initially held services in a storefront until money had been raised to buy land and build a sanctuary.

Messiah Mission Church, also known as Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, was a Lutheran church in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan. Hobart Brown Upjohn (1876–1949) was an American architect, best known for designing a number of ecclesiastical and educational structures in New York and in North Carolina. He also designed a number of significant private homes. His firm produced a total of about 150 projects, a third of which were in North Carolina.
