The term "minority group" has different usages,depending on the context. According to its common usage,the term minority group can simply be understood in terms of demographic sizes within a population:i.e. a group in society with the least number of individuals,or less than half,is a "minority’. Usually a minority group is disempowered relative to the majority,and that characteristic lends itself to different applications of the term minority.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international human rights treaty of the United Nations intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. Parties to the convention are required to promote,protect,and ensure the full enjoyment of human rights by persons with disabilities and ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy full equality under the law. The Convention serves as a major catalyst in the global disability rights movement enabling a shift from viewing persons with disabilities as objects of charity,medical treatment and social protection towards viewing them as full and equal members of society,with human rights. The convention was the first U.N. human rights treaty of the twenty-first century.
Professor Michael O'Flaherty is the current Director of the European Union Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA). The FRA is the EU's human rights advisory body,based in Vienna,Austria. An Irish human rights lawyer,O’Flaherty was a member from 2004 to 2012 of the United Nations Human Rights Committee (HRC),the expert body that oversees compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Again nominated by Ireland in 2008,O'Flaherty was re-elected to the HRC with the highest number of votes achieved by any candidate. On 19 September 2011 he took up appointment as the third Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC),the statutory national human rights institution for Northern Ireland. He resigned as chief commissioner in October 2013.

They are the chairperson of the American Bar Association Civil Rights &Social Justice Disability Rights Committee. They are also Policy Counsel for Privacy &Data at the Center for Democracy &Technology,and Director of Policy,Advocacy,&External Affairs at the Autistic Women &Nonbinary Network. In 2022,they unsuccessfully ran for the Maryland House of Delegates in District 7A,losing to state delegate Kathy Szeliga and delegate-elect Ryan Nawrocki.

Intersex people in the United Kingdom face significant gaps in legal protections,particularly in protection from non-consensual medical interventions,and protection from discrimination. Actions by intersex civil society organisations aim to eliminate unnecessary medical interventions and harmful practices,promote social acceptance,and equality in line with Council of Europe and United Nations demands. Intersex civil society organisations campaign for greater social acceptance,understanding of issues of bodily autonomy,and recognition of the human rights of intersex people.
Victor Madrigal-Borloz is a Costa Rican lawyer. Since 2018,he has served as the United Nations Independent Experton protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. During his tenure at the U.N.,Madrigal-Borloz has been noted for focusing his Human Rights Council mandate on investigating a broad and intersectional range of issues facing LGBT communities around the world,including conversion therapy,criminalization,socio-cultural exclusion,anti-trans rhetoric,and the outsized impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on vulnerable LGBT and gender-diverse populations.
Approximately 12 million French citizens are affected by disability. The history of disability activism in France dates back to the French Revolution when the national obligation to help disabled citizens was recognized,but it was "unclear whether or not such assistance should be public or private." Disabled civilians began to form the first associations to demand equal rights and integration in the workforce after the First World War. Between 1940 and 1945,45,000 people with intellectual disabilities died from neglect in French psychiatric asylums. After the Second World War,parents of disabled children and charities created specialized institutions for disabled children for whom school was not accessible. In 2018,the French Government began to roll out a disability policy which aimed to increase the allowance for disabled adults to €900 per month,improve the digital accessibility of public services,and develop easy-to-read and understand language among other goals.
Hilal Elver is a member of the Academic Council of the UN Least Developed Countries (2011-2021) and was the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food from June 2,2014,until May 1,2020. She is also a research professor at University of California,Santa Barbara and a Global Distinguished Fellow at the Resnick Food Law and Policy Center UCLA Law School.
