Gerard Valcin (1923-1988) was a self taught, Haitian painter who is known most commonly for his work depicting Haitian Vodou rituals and the labors of everyday Haitian life.
Gerard Valcin was born in 1923 in Haiti into a very poor family and his parents couldn't pay for him to receive an education. He was in school for only 3 years until he quit to make money weaving twine for hats as a young boy. [1] He only earned two cents for every three yards of wine he weaved; he then worked as a tile setter for twelve years. [1] "Profits from the tile work allowed me to paint." – Gerard Valcin. [1]
Vulcan received no formal training in painting of any art form. However, as a young boy, Valcin would watch a man in his neighborhood paint Vodou Spirits on pieces of cardboard in his front yard. The paint was made from limes, eggs, bark and homemade rum. After seeing this, he started painting himself with similar homemade paints. He began painting from his spiritual imagination – influenced by country life and the blending of Vodou and Masonic Masonry. However, most of his work comes from the inspiration of Vodou Spirits, beliefs, and ceremonies. While working as a tile setter, he met a group of painters who were using real, store bought, paints. In 1947, Valcin brought one of his paintings to the Centre d'Arte in Port-au-Prince. Dwight Peters, the director of the Centre d'Arte, was scouting just such untrained artists and wanted to nurture their work. In 1950, Valcin official started the Centre d'Arte. Peters provided Valcin, and other such artists, with supplies and space to exhibit and sell their work. Gerard Valcin died in 1988. His half-brother Pierre-Joseph Valcin [2] was also a painter. Also his nephew Favrange Valcin, Valcin II, was one. [3]
Baron Samedi, also written Baron Samdi, Bawon Samedi or Bawon Sanmdi, is one of the lwa of Haitian Vodou. He is a lwa of the dead, along with Baron's numerous other incarnations Baron Cimetière, Baron La Croix and Baron Criminel.
Adriaen Isenbrandt or Adriaen Ysenbrandt was a painter in Bruges, in the final years of Early Netherlandish painting, and the first of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting of the Northern Renaissance. Documentary evidence suggests he was a significant and successful artist of his period, even though no specific works by his hand are clearly documented. Art historians have conjectured that he operated a large workshop specializing in religious subjects and devotional paintings, which were executed in a conservative style in the tradition of the Early Netherlandish painting of the previous century. By his time, the new booming economy of Antwerp had made this the centre of painting in the Low Countries, but the previous centre of Bruges retained considerable prestige.
Rigaud Benoit (1911–1986) had become one of the three or four most highly prized Haitian artists well before his death.
Prospère Pierre-Louis (1947–1997), also known as Prosper Pierre-Louis, was a Haitian artist, painter; and one of the main contributors to the Saint Soleil art movement. His paintings depicting mystical Vodou lwa and spirits are especially noteworthy.
Philomé Obin was a Haitian painter. He produced his first painting in 1908 at the age of 16, and was an active artist for 75 years. Obin is considered one of the greatest Haitian artists of the 20th century.
Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue was one of Haiti's most renowned painters of the 20th century.
Préfète Duffaut was a Haitian painter.
Alexandre Grégoire was a Haitian painter who typically depicted scenes of Vodou, daily life, and historical events in the naïve style.
Hector Hyppolite was a Haitian painter. Considered as the "Grand Maître of Haitian Art" Born in Saint-Marc, Hyppolite was a third generation Vodou priest, or oungan. He also made shoes and painted houses before taking up fine art painting, which he did untrained. Hyppolite spent five years outside of Haiti from 1915 to 1920. His travels abroad included trips to New York and Cuba. Although he later claimed those years had been spent in Africa, such as Dahomey and Ethiopia, scholars regard that as more likely an instance of promotional myth-making than factual.
Haitian art is a complex tradition, reflecting African roots with strong Indigenous, American and European aesthetic and religious influences. It is an important expression of Haitian culture and history.
Murat Brierre or Murat Briere (1938–1988) was one of Haiti's principal metal sculptors and was known for his recycling of surplus oil drum lids. He was influenced by George Liautaud, but his work acquired its own highly experimental style, often focusing on multi-faceted and conjoined figures, fantastically personified elements, and unborn babies visible within larger creatures.
Gede Nibo is a lwa who is leader of the spirits of the dead in Haitian Vodou. Formerly human, Gede Nibo was a handsome young man who was killed violently. After death, he was adopted as a lwa by Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte. He is envisioned as an effeminate, nasal dandy. Nibo wears a black riding coat or drag. When he inhabits humans they are inspired to lascivious sexuality of all kinds.
Levoy Exil, is a master Haitian artist and painter; he is one of the main contributors to the Saint Soleil art movement.
Louisiane Saint Fleurant was a Haitian female artist and painter. She was a founder of the peasant Saint Soleil art movement.
Gérard Gasiorowski (1930–1986) was a French photographer, painter, and fictive artist.
Pierrot Barra (1942–1999) was a Haitian Vodou artist and priest, who was president of a Bizango society. He was well-known for his use of diverse materials to create “Vodou Things,” which functioned as charms or altars for the Vodou religion.
Madsen Mompremier is a Haitian oil painter, known for his depictions of Vodou gods (lwa).
Agathe Aladin is a Haitian artist, known for her paintings in both oil and acrylic. Her paintings include scenes of family, womanhood, everyday life, and Haitian Vodou.
Gerard Fortune, commonly known by his first name Gerard, was a Haitian artist. His exact date of birth is uncertain, though Gerard has said he was alive during the Haitian dictatorship of Jean Claude Duvalier. Gerard was born and raised in the city of Petionville, a suburb of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. Gerard died on December 8, 2019.
