Gertrude Njuba

Gertrude Njuba is a Ugandan politician who was a key figure in the National Resistance Army (NRA) during the Ugandan Bush War where she held the rank of Captain and was known for her bravery and leadership on the battlefield. [1] [2] She later served in various positions in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, including as a member of parliament and presidential advisor. [3] [4] She has received several national medals of honor for her service to Uganda including the Order of the Nile, the Order of the Pearl of Africa, and the Golden Jubilee Medals. [5]

Early life

She was born on 26 November 1944 [2] in Hoima to Bishop Yokana Mukasa and Norah Nakanywa Mukasa. She attended Duhanga Girls' School and Makerere College School. She married Sam Kalega Njuba on 14 September 1964. [2]

Career

In 1981, she joined the NRA bush war and was one of the first women to undergo military training to serve in the liberation struggle. She has served as Chairperson on the Lake Victoria Free Trade Zone Governing council, Presidential advisor on Political Matters and State House director on Land Matters. After the NRA bush war ended, she served as Deputy Minister for Industry in Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's 1986 cabinet. [2]

In September 2016, she was noted to have been vocal in encouraging Ugandans to stream onto streets in Kampala and demonstrate against the 10th Parliament's lavish spending on cars and funerals. [6] She was however against the dropping of piglets within the corridors of the Ugandan parliament by the Jobless Brotherhood youths. [7] [8]

In 2020, Gertrude who was then serving a presidential advisor is alleged to have connived with Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development officials to continue mining in Mubende district, an area where the government evicted illegal miners. [9]

The Uganda Freedom Fighters (UFF), also known as the Buganda Army, was a Ugandan rebel group led by former president Yusufu Lule. Opposed to Milton Obote's government, the group fought in the Ugandan Bush War. By early 1981, the group was based in the forests between Matugga and Kapeeka, and it operated in the forests of Mukono, Luweero, and Mubende. The UFF was supposed to receive weapons shipments from Libya, but these never arrived due to Obote's military increasing security after the Battle of Kabamba in February 1981. The UFF eventually merged with Yoweri Museveni's Popular Resistance Army to create the National Resistance Army (NRA). The NRA would go on to topple the military junta of Tito Okello and take power in 1986.

Prior to that, she served as the Minister for the Presidency, from 2006 until May 2011. In the cabinet reshuffle of 27 May 2011, she was replaced at the Ministry for the Presidency by Kabakumba Masiko. She formerly served as the Member of Parliament (MP), representing Sironko District Women's Constituency from 2001 until 2011.

Janat Balunzi Mukwaya is a politician and former Major in the military of Uganda. Currently she is a Senior Presidential Advisor Before that, she previously served as the Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister from 16 February 2009 until 27 May 2011. the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Affairs from 6 June 2016 until December 2019. Minister of Trade and Industry from June 2006 until February 2009. In May 2011, she temporarily retired from politics and was replaced in the cabinet by Kiddu Makubuya. She also served as the elected member of Parliament for Mukono South Constituency in Mukono District, from 2006 until her retirement in 2011.

Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga is a Ugandan army officer, who currently serves as Commander of Land Forces in UPDF. He was appointed to that position in October 2022 by the President of Uganda and Commander in chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni. He previously served as commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force contingent in Eastern DRC under Operation Shujaa. He was appointed to that position in January 2021 by Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. Prior to that, Maj. General Muhanga served as the commandant of the military police within the UPDF.

Benna Namugwanya Bugembe is a Ugandan politician. She is the State Minister for Kampala Capital City Authority in the Ugandan Cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016. She concurrently serves as the Mubende District Woman Representative in the 10th Parliament (2016–2021).

Proscovia Nalweyiso, is a senior Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). At the rank of lieutenant general, she is the highest ranking female officer, in the Ugandan military.
