Ghulam Faruq Yaqubi (1938 –16 April 1992) was an Afghan politician and Army General. He was a significant figure In the Afghan Security Service,KHAD,from 1980 to 1985.
Born in Kabul,son of Khan Muhammad,and educated at the Najat School,Kabul police academy and in West Germany.
He began his career as a lecturer at the Kabul police academy in 1966. Subsequently,he served as the director of operations and general director of the criminal department in Ministry of Interior Affairs. [1] Yakubi was promoted both to Politburo status and the rank of Colonel General,the highest rank held by the regime's military. In 1986 the KHAD became a separate ministry under the name Ministry of State Security (WAD). The ministry was personally controlled by him,who started to take part in cabinet meetings in a ministerial capacity. [2]
He was responsible for the defeat of a coup attempt on March 6,1990. In that opportunity,Lieut. Gen. Shahnawaz Tanai and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar attempted to overthrow the Government,but their plans were discovered by the WAD under his command. [2]
After the collapse of President Najibullah's government in April 1992,he was either assassinated by the Afghan mujahideen or committed suicide. [2] Although the new ruling council eventually declared a general amnesty (excluding President Mohammad Najibullah and former AGSA head Assadullah Sawari),there were other instances of summary execution and reprisal killings by various forces after the coup. Some sources claimed that he killed himself after learning of the President's attempted escape.
Babrak Karmal was an Afghan communist revolutionary and politician who was the leader of Afghanistan,serving in the post of general secretary of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1986.

After a failed attempt to flee to India,Najibullah remained in Kabul. He lived in the United Nations headquarters until his assassination during the Taliban's capture of Kabul.

Khalq was a faction of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA). The Khalq wing was formed in 1967 after the split of the party due to bitter resentment with the rival Parcham faction which had a differing revolutionary strategy.

Sharq became Chairman of the Council of Ministers –the government of the Soviet-backed Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. He was selected as a compromise candidate after a loya jirga ratified a new constitution in 1987. However,the power of his office was relatively slight compared with the powers held by the presidency.
Colonel General Abdul Kadir Dagarwal was an Afghan politician,diplomat,and a military officer in the Afghan Air Force who participated in the coup d'état that created the Republic of Afghanistan under the President Dawood Khan,and later directed the Afghan Air Force and Army Air Corps squadrons that attacked the Radio-TV station during the Saur Revolution.
Mohammad Aslam Watanjar was an Afghan military officer and politician. He played a significant role in the coup in 1978 that killed the Afghan President Mohammad Daoud Khan,starting the Saur Revolution. Watanjar later became a member of the politburo in the Soviet-backed Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

The council was the supreme state power under the communist regime and was a carbon copy of the Supreme Soviet in the Soviet Union. The point with the council was to convene on a semiannual basis to approve decisions made by the presidium.

The 1990 Afghan coup d'etat attempt occurred on March 6,1990,when General Shahnawaz Tanai,a hardline communist and Khalqist who served as Minister of Defence,attempted to overthrow President Mohammad Najibullah of the Republic of Afghanistan. The coup attempt failed and Tanai was forced to flee to Pakistan.
Assadullah Amin was an Afghan politician and the nephew of Hafizullah Amin. He was the head of the Afghan intelligence agency KAM from September 1979 until December 1979,when his uncle was assassinated by the KGB. Assadullah Amin was executed by the Soviet backed Afghan Government of Babrak Karmal for his role in KAM a year later.
General Abdul Jabar Qahraman was an Afghan military officer,warlord and politician who came to prominence for his ability to mobilize large amounts of men to join his pro-government militias. Qahraman played a significant role in Afghan politics in the late 1980s and early 90s. He transitioned from a militia leader to a party leader in the 2010s. Qahraman was assassinated by the Taliban on October 18,2018.
