Gia Kourlas is an American dance critic. Since 2019, she had written as the dance critic for The New York Times . [1] [2]
Kourlas was raised in Columbus, Ohio. [2] She began dancing at age 5; a few years later, she switched to figure skating. [1] She pursued a bachelor's degree in journalism at Ohio State University, where she also worked at student newspaper The Lantern . [2] While at college, she also began taking dance classes again.
After moving to New York City in 1989, [2] Kourlas worked for New York Magazine and the Museum of Television and Radio, was an assistant to George Plimpton, and became an editor at The Paris Review . [1] [2] She also took classes at the Martha Graham School. [1]
Kourlas first began writing about dance when she became the dance critic for Time Out New York in 1995. [2] She continued writing for the publication until they eliminated the position in 2015. [3] [4] In 2016, Kourlas began producing a weekly dance series for The New York Times' Instagram, called #SpeakingInDance. [1] [2] In August 2019, Kourlas was made a full-time dance critic for The New York Times; she had written pieces on dance for the publication since 2000. [1] [2] She has also written for Dance Magazine . [5]
Kourlas has said she wants her writing to make dance more accessible to the public, [2] and as such she has written about dance in popular culture. [1] Kourlas was also one of the earlier critics to note the lack of diversity in major American dance companies. [1] [6] In 2016, she was a resident fellow of NYU's Center for Ballet and the Arts, during which she focused on studying diversity and the presence of Black dancers in the world of classical ballet. [7] Kourlas has also written about the #MeToo movement and feminism in the dance world. [2]

He created AAADT and its affiliated Alvin Ailey American Dance Center as havens for nurturing Black artists and expressing the universality of the African-American experience through dance.

She is a current staff member at Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts where she teaches dance and choreography. Her work has been performed at notable performance venues such as the Joyce Theater, the Joyce SoHo, and New York Live Arts, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Justin Peck is an American choreographer, director, and dancer associated with New York City Ballet, of which he was appointed Resident Choreographer in July 2014, being the second person in the history of the institution to hold this title. In 2018 he won the Tony Award for Best Choreography for his work on the third Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel. Peck also choreographed the 2021 Steven Spielberg film West Side Story, an adaptation of the musical.
Blakeley White-McGuire born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a dancer, choreographer, répétiteur, and educator. She is a Principal Guest Artist and former Principal Dancer of Martha Graham Dance Company. Described by Gia Kourlas of the New York Times as having a "powerful technique and dramatic instinct with an appealing modern spunk", White-McGuire has received widespread critical acclaim as a Graham dancer.
Aesha Ash is an American ballet dancer and teacher. She danced numerous leading roles as a member of New York City Ballet's corps de ballet and as a soloist with Béjart Ballet and Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. Following her retirement from performing, she founded The Swan Dreams Project in 2011 to dispel stereotypes about Black women in ballet. In 2020, she became the first African American female faculty member at the School of American Ballet.
Lauren Lovette is an American ballet dancer and choreographer who was previously a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet.
Aileen Passloff was an American dancer and teacher who lived and worked in New York City. From 1949 to 1953, she studied at Bennington College. She attended the School of American Ballet, where she met James Waring, and participated in his workshops and dance company. From 1958 to 1968, Passloff ran the Aileen Passloff Dance Company in New York City. She was a member of the experimental dance collective Judson Dance Theater and part of their retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. She was a professor of dance at Bard College for 40 years. Passloff stars in Marta Renzi's film Her Magnum Opus in 2018.

Indiana Woodward is a French ballet dancer. She joined the New York City Ballet in 2012, and was promoted to principal dancer in 2021.
