Giambattista or Giovanni Battista Canano (born 1515, died 29 January 1579 [1] ) was a physician and anatomist, active mainly in his native Ferrara.
His aristocratic family, of Greek ancestry, produced a number of physicians and scholars. [2] His father, Ludovico Canano, was a notary. His grandfather was lecturer in medicine at Ferrara and physician at court. The family came to Italy from Greece in the 15th century. [1]
Canano's studies were most likely directed by his uncle Hippolito. [3] He became professor of anatomy at the University of Ferrara in 1541. [4] [5] He was physician to Francesco d'Este in France in 1544, and personal physician to Physician to Pope Julius III from 1552 to 1555. [1]
He pursued most of his dissections at his own home, with his cousin Antonio Maria Canano. [2] [1] These surgeries were attended by leading physicians of the city. [1]
Canano was a colleague of Andreas Vesalius and Vesalius attributes to Canano the first observation of valves of veins, a crucial discovery that would lead to the understanding of the circulatory system. [4]
He published one volume of his own writings on anatomy, Musculorum humani corporis picturata dissectio, illustrated by Gerolamo da Carpi. [2] It contained 20 pages with 27 illustrations. [3] He never completed the later volumes. He may have been discouraged by the great success of Vesalius' De humani corporis fabrica , which covered the same subjects Canano was working on. [5] However Canano's book was highly original, containing the first anatomical drawings of the lumbricals and interossei of the hand, and the first description and drawing of the palmaris brevis muscle and the oblique head of the adductor pollicis muscle, which was not observed by Vesalius and was unknown to Galen. [1] Canano was the first to discover the palmaris brevis. [3]

Considered to be one of the most accomplished of all medical researchers of antiquity, Galen influenced the development of various scientific disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and neurology, as well as philosophy and logic.
Andries van Wezel, latinised as Andreas Vesalius, was an anatomist and physician who wrote De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem, what is considered to be one of the most influential books on human anatomy and a major advance over the long-dominant work of Galen. Vesalius is often referred to as the founder of modern human anatomy. He was born in Brussels, which was then part of the Habsburg Netherlands. He was a professor at the University of Padua (1537–1542) and later became Imperial physician at the court of Emperor Charles V.
The history of anatomy extends from the earliest examinations of sacrificial victims to the sophisticated analyses of the body performed by modern anatomists and scientists. Written descriptions of human organs and parts can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Egyptian papyri, where attention to the body was necessitated by their highly elaborate burial practices.

Bernhard Siegfried Albinus was a German-born Dutch anatomist. He served a professor of medicine at the University of Leiden like his father Bernhard Albinus (1653–1721). He also published a large-format artistic atlas of human anatomy, with engravings made by Jan Wandelaar.
The pulmonary circulation is a division of the circulatory system in all vertebrates. The circuit begins with deoxygenated blood returned from the body to the right atrium of the heart where it is pumped out from the right ventricle to the lungs. In the lungs the blood is oxygenated and returned to the left atrium to complete the circuit.

Charles was a younger brother of Robert Estienne I, the famous printer, and son to Henri, who Latinized the family name as Stephanus. He married Geneviève de Berly.
De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem is a set of books on human anatomy written by Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564) and published in 1543. It was a major advance in the history of anatomy over the long-dominant work of Galen, and presented itself as such.

Jacopo Berengario da Carpi was an Italian physician. His book "Isagoge breves" published in 1522 made him the most important anatomist before Andreas Vesalius.
Adriaan van den Spiegel, name sometimes written as Adrianus Spigelius, was a Flemish anatomist born in Brussels. For much of his career he practiced medicine in Padua, and is considered one of the great physicians associated with the city. At Padua he studied anatomy under Girolamo Fabrici.
Juan Valverde de Amusco was born in the Crown of Castille in what is now Spain c. 1525 and studied medicine in Padua and Rome under Realdo Columbo and Bartolomeo Eustachi. He published several works on anatomy, including De animi et corporis sanitate tuenda libellus.
Volcher Coiter was a Dutch anatomist who established the study of comparative osteology and first described cerebrospinal meningitis. He also studied the human eye and was able to demonstrate the replenishment of the aqueous humor. Coiter's muscle is a name sometimes used for the corrugator superciliaris that is involved in wrinkling of the eyebrow. He illustrated his works with his own meticulously detailed drawings.
A cadaver or corpse is a dead human body. Cadavers are used by medical students, physicians and other scientists to study anatomy, identify disease sites, determine causes of death, and provide tissue to repair a defect in a living human being. Students in medical school study and dissect cadavers as a part of their education. Others who study cadavers include archaeologists and arts students. In addition, a cadaver may be used in the development and evaluation of surgical instruments.
The Medical Renaissance, from around 1400 to 1700 CE, was a period of progress in European medical knowledge, with renewed interest in the ideas of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations along with Arabic-Persian medicine, following the translation into Latin of many works from these societies. Medical discoveries during the Medical Renaissance are credited with paving the way for modern medicine.
