Gilbert Peterson (August 5, 1824 - November 14, 1890), was an American contractor from Lockport, New York. He was the founder and President of Peterson & Sons, which he ran with his two sons, Charles Gilbert Peterson and Jesse Peterson. The company executed contracts building the waterworks of Toledo, Ohio; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; part of the Genesee Valley Canal Railroad [1] and worked on multiple reservoirs in the Washington, DC area. [2] [3] Previously he was a partner at Hunt, Peterson & Kinsley, responsible for enlarging Erie Canal between Middleport, New York and Gasport, New York in 1855, and canal repairs in Albany, New York, Frankfort, New York and Kilburn Hill, New York. [4] Peterson was Superintendent of both the eastern and western divisions of the Erie Canal and in 1867–1868, he was Alderman of the 2nd Ward of Lockport, New York. [5]

He is the great grandfather of Charles Sterling Bunnell.

Jesse Peterson

Jesse Peterson, was an American industrialist and politician from Lockport, New York. In 1886, Jesse Peterson, along with Henry G. Cordley, and Charles E. Folger, started the United Indurated Fibre Company. By 1893 the company was incorporated under New Jersey laws, with the factory and general office in Lockport. About 300 hands are employed in the manufacture of household articles from the indurated fibre, the basis of which is wood pulp. In addition to the United Indurated Fibre Company, Jesse Peterson was the President of the Buffalo Warehouse & Distributing Company, Owner of the Cascade Pulp Mills, Director and Vice President of the Lockport Water & Electric Company and an associate of Peterson & Sons.

Charles Gilbert Peterson, was an American contractor from Lockport, New York. He was an associate in Peterson & Sons with his father, Gilbert Peterson and brother, Jesse Peterson. The company executed such contracts as the waterworks of Toledo, Ohio and Grand Rapids, Michigan along with a reservoir in Washington, D.C. He was Mayor of Lockport in 1896 - 1897. Peterson along with Sterling H. Bunnell, held a patent on the Furnace Charging Apparatus.

The Rochester, Lockport and Buffalo Railroad was an electric interurban railway that was constructed between Rochester, New York, and Lockport, New York, connecting to the International Railway Co. at Lockport for service into Buffalo. Opened in 1909 as the Buffalo, Lockport and Rochester Railway, the route followed the Erie Canal and the New York Central Railroad's Falls Road branch for most of its length. For a brief period of time, the railway was part of the Beebe Syndicate of affiliated interurban railways stretching from Syracuse to Buffalo. Entering receivership in 1917, it was reorganized as the Rochester, Lockport and Buffalo Railroad in 1919. After years of struggling with declining revenue during the Depression years, the railway's last day of service was April 30, 1931.

Medina sandstone is a geographic subset of the Medina Group stratigraphic formation in New York state and beyond. The name refers specifically to sandstone first quarried in Medina, NY and later quarried in other locations in Orleans County and adjacent quarries in Monroe County to the east and Niagara County to the west. Medina Sandstone was widely used to pave the streets of early U.S. cities because it was sufficiently hard to stand long and severe service, and in wearing it maintained a flat, even surface where granite would wear round and acquire a smooth slippery polish. The Medina stone was also a highly desirable building stone that could be obtained in colors from light gray to pink, red and brown. It was used in the construction of hundreds of homes, churches, public buildings, monuments and other structures from the 1830s to the mid-1900s.
