The 1904 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the III Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in St. Louis, Missouri, United States from August 29 until September 3, 1904, as part of an extended sports program lasting from July 1 to November 23, 1904, at what is now known as Francis Field on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. It was the first time that the Olympic Games were held outside Europe. Boxing, the oldest combat sport was introduced.

Frank Farmer Loomis Jr. was an American athlete, winner of 400 m hurdles at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerpen. His brother, Jo Gilbert Loomis, was a substitute sprinter at the same Olympics.

Patricia Jean "Patty" Van Wolvelaere is a retired hurdler from the United States who competed at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics Olympics. Her best finish was the fourth place in the 80 m event in 1968. She won the 100 m hurdles at the 1971 Pan American Games and held four national outdoor titles in this event, in 1971, 1973–74 and 1977. Van Wolvelaere also won the National Indoor Championships in the 60 yard hurdles six times between 1967 and 1974, including four in a row in 1971–74.

Edwin Fisher Gilbert is an American former competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. He competed for the gold medal-winning U.S. team in the qualifying heats of the men's 4×200-meter freestyle relay. Gilbert did not receive a medal under the Olympic swimming rules in effect in 1948; only relay swimmers who competed in the event final were medal-eligible.
