In that year the Diocese of Muro Lucano was united into the Archdiocese of Potenza e Marsico Nuovo, which had been elevated to an archdiocese in 1973, and made a metropolitan see in 1976. The historical Diocese of Potenza was united with the Diocese of Marsico Nuovo in 1818.

In 1986. the territorial prelature of Altamura e Acquaviva delle Fonti was united with the diocese of Gravina. The present diocese is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto.

Acquaviva delle Fonti Cathedral is the main church of Acquaviva delle Fonti, dedicated to Saint Eustace. It is now a co-cathedral of the Diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti. Previously it was the palatine church of Acquaviva delle Fonti, which became part of the territorial prelature of Altamura e Acquaviva delle Fonti formed by Pius IX in 1848, when he added Acquaviva to the existing territorial prelature of Altamura.

Altamura Diocesan Museum Matroneum is a museum located inside Altamura Cathedral, whose entrance is on the left side of the church's main entrance. It is located on the second and third floors, in the so-called matroneum of Altamura Cathedral. Among other things, the museum holds statues from the Middle Ages, the XV and XVI centuries. Books, notary letters, reliquaries as well as most of the cultural heritage collected in Altamura Cathedral over the centuries are on exhibition inside the museum. The so-called Murat's cloak is also on exhibition.
