Established as the state's seminary in 1820,the name was changed to "Indiana College" in 1829 and to "Indiana University" in 1838.
David Nathaniel Baker Jr. was an American jazz composer,conductor,and musician from Indianapolis,as well as a professor of jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Baker is best known as an educator and founder of the jazz studies program. From 1991 to 2012,he was conductor and musical and artistic director for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has more than 65 recordings,70 books,and 400 articles to his credit.

Herman B Wells,a native of Boone County,Indiana,was the eleventh president of Indiana University Bloomington and its first university chancellor. He was pivotal in the transformation of Indiana University from a small,locally oriented college into a world-class institution of higher learning through expanded enrollment,recruitment of new faculty,construction of new buildings,new program offerings,and campus beautification projects. He remained steadfast in his support of IU's faculty and students,especially in the areas of academic freedom and civil rights. Wells began his career in banking,but served the university in a variety of faculty and administrative capacities during his seventy-year career at IU Bloomington:instructor and assistant professor,department of economics (1930–35;dean and professor of administration,school of business administration;acting president;president;university chancellor;interim president;and chairman of the board of the Indiana University Foundation,as well as other leadership roles at the IU Foundation.

It has more than 1,500 students,approximately half of whom are undergraduates,with the second largest enrollment of all music schools accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
William Leon Garrett was a basketball player,coach,educator,and a college administrator who is best known as the first African American to regularly play on a Big Ten Conference varsity basketball team. Prior to becoming a college player for Indiana University (1947–51),the Shelbyville,Indiana,native led his Shelbyville High School basketball team to its first state high school basketball championship in 1947 and he was named Indiana Mr. Basketball. In 1959 Garrett coached Indianapolis's Crispus Attucks High School boys' basketball team to the state high school basketball championship title,making him the only Indiana Mr. Basketball to win a state championship as a player and as a coach.

She was a founding member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths and studied under several internationally renowned metalsmiths,such as Karl Gustav Hansen. Eikerman's work has appeared in over 200 exhibitions,including Objects:USA at the Smithsonian Institution.
Stanley Ritchie,an Australian violinist born in 1935,is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Violin at Jacobs School of Music,Indiana University. A noted specialist in historical performance,Ritchie is author of two relevant books,‘Before the Chinrest - A Violinist’s Guide to the Mysteries of Pre-Chinrest Technique and Style’(2012) and 'The Accompaniment in "Unaccompanied" Bach - Interpreting the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin' (2016),both published by Indiana University Press.

The Indiana University School of Nursing is an academic college of higher education connected to Indiana University with its main research and educational facilities on the Indiana University –Purdue University Indianapolis campus and at Indiana University Bloomington. It is known for its nursing research and education,scholarship of teaching and nursing practice,and for its collaborations with IU hospitals and clinical partners. Established in 1914 as the Indiana University Training School for Nurses,it awarded its first nursing diplomas in 1917 and was renamed the IU School of Nursing in 1956. It offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree,a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree,and two doctoral degrees:Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The IU nursing school has received multiple research grants from the National Institutes of Health.
Dennis Gail Peters was an American analytical chemist who specialized in electrochemistry and was named the Herman T. Briscoe Professor at Indiana University in 1975. Peters led his own research group at Indiana University in Bloomington,Indiana until his death in 2020. Peters' research focused on the electrochemical behavior of halogenated organic compounds,more recently moving to focus on transition metal catalysts in regards to the oxidation and reduction of organic species. He authored or co-authored over 210 publications and 5 analytical chemistry textbooks.
Kenneth R. R. Gros Louis was a university official and English professor at Indiana University Bloomington. Born in New Hampshire,he attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Columbia University,graduating in 1959. In 1964 he was awarded a PhD in English and comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research dealt with medieval and Renaissance literature. His teaching methods were brought together in Literary Interpretations of Biblical Narratives,which appeared in 21 editions published by Abingdon Press between 1974 and 1982.
