Global Love Day

Global Love Day is a minor observance day celebrated on 1 May around the world. It is celebrated in various countries, but primarily in the United States. [1] [2] [3] A number of American Governors, Mayors, and officials have proclaimed 1 May as "Global Love Day", mostly noted by officials in Florida, [4] Nevada, [5] [6] Maine, [7] Illinois, [8] Wisconsin, [9] [10] Hawaii, [11] Alabama, [12] and Canada. History

Harold W. Becker, the founder of "The Love Foundation", a United States non profit organization created Global Love Day, which was launched on 1 May 2004. [15] The annual observance was created to encourage unity among people, communities, nations, and to celebrate humanity through unconditional love. [16]

This international event is intended to be a symbolic day of unconditional love. [17]

Observances

Events

Since 2004, Global Love Day events takes place yearly around the world, including the United States, [18] among the U.S. Hmong Community, [19] England, [20] India, [21] and others. The holiday encourages individuals, groups, and organizations to host gatherings and celebrations according to their unique inspiration, while also being inclusive of other cultures and social considerations.

Proclamations

As of May 2024, more than 918 official proclamations have been issued by Governors, Mayors, and Councils from North America and Europe, recognizing 1 May as "Global Love Day". A noteworthy addition in 2019 was a proclamation from the Dalai Lama honoring the day. [22]

In 1998 writers for The Simpsons created a cynical holiday called Love Day, for the express intent of selling merchandise. This new holiday ultimately leads to the abandonment of Springfield after it is overwhelmed with garbage.

In recent years, Global Love Day has been referenced in popular cultures, social media, on daily events calendars, [23] [24] [25] blogs and well-known persons such as LeAnn Rimes. [26]

The practices of slavery and human trafficking are still prevalent in modern America with estimated 17,500 foreign nationals and 400,000 Americans being trafficked into and within the United States every year with 80% of those being women and children. Human trafficking in the United States can be divided into the two major categories of labor and sex trafficking, with sex trafficking accounting for a majority of cases.

In the United States, the first full week of September is designated National Blood Donation Week. Established in 2016, the week United States is to hold individual state blood donation days. This serves to assist blood banks all over the country to keep their shelves full and to raise awareness of the continual need to donate blood and blood products. September 4th of the week holds most of the states' blood donation days, and is known as National Blood Donation Day.

National Blood Donation Day comes each year on September 4. It is an observance during National Blood Donation Week and campaign that highlights the need for blood. Multiple states throughout the United States have their state blood donation day on this same day uniting the country in its effort to keep blood banks and hospitals stocked.
