Gloria Akuffo (born 31 December 1954) is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician who served as the Attorney General of Ghana and Minister for Justice from 2017 until 2021. [1] [2] [3] She also served as Deputy Attorney General and Aviation Minister in the John Kuffuor administration. [4]
She was born on 31 December 1954 in Accra and comes from Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region and Shai Osudoku in the Greater Accra Region. Gloria Akuffo graduated in 1979 from the University of Ghana with a B.A. (Hons) in Law and Political Science. She became a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Ghana,enrolling at the Ghana Bar Association in 1982. [1]
She was a founding partner in a private legal firm,Owusu-Yeboa,Akuffo &Associates,in Accra. [5] She is Head of Litigation at Blay and Associates. [6] She was appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice by President Nana Akufo Addo upon his assumption of power in 2017. [7] As Attorney General,Akufo represented Ghana in a maritime boundary dispute with Ivory Coast at International Tribunal for Law of the Sea(ITLOS). The case at the tribunal had travel for years and successive governments. Akufo and predecessor,Mariata Brew Appiah Oppong successfully defended Ghana's interest and in September 2017,the ITLOS ruled in favour of the Ghana,stating that Ghana had not violated the maritime boundaries in her oil exploration efforts. [8] According the court ruling,a ny new boundary was to pass the West of Tweneboa,Enyenra,Ntomme oil and gas fields. The ruling saved Ghana some $49 billion. [9] In March 2023,Nana Akufo-Addo bestowed national honours on the team of lawyers including Gloria Akufo who secured a favourable decision for Ghana in the maritime border dispute with the Ivory Coast. Akufo's appointment as Attorney General and Minister of Justice was not renewed by Akufo-Addo after he secured a second-term mandate as President in 2020. She was replaced by her deputy,Godfred Yeboah Dame,in 2021. [10]
She is a member of the New Patriotic Party. From 2001 to 2005,Akuffo was Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General,the first woman to hold these positions. From 2005 to 2006,Akuffo was Deputy Minister for the Greater Accra Region. Akuffo served as the first Minister of Aviation from 2006 till July 2008. She was appointed Ambassador to Ireland in July 2008. [11] .She served as Lead Counsel in the Supreme Court dispute involving the 2013 election petition case before the Supreme court in Ghana. [2]
Gloria was a key member of the legal team of New Patriotic Party during the 2012 election petition with Philip Addison as the lead counsel. [12]
Politics of Ghana takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic,whereby the president of Ghana is both head of state and head of government,and of a two party system. The seat of government is at Golden Jubilee House. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and Parliament. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
Edward Akufo-Addo was a Ghanaian politician and lawyer. He was a member of the "Big Six" leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and one of the founding fathers of Ghana who engaged in the fight for Ghana's independence. He became the Chief Justice (1966–70),and later ceremonial President (1970–72),of the Republic of Ghana. He is the father of the current (executive) President of Ghana,Nana Addo Akufo-Addo.
Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo was the Chief Justice of Ghana from 19 June 2017 until 20 December 2019. She had been a Judge in the Supreme Court of Ghana since 1995.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a Ghanaian politician who has served as the president of Ghana since 2017. He previously served as Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007 under the Kufuor-led administration.

He is also known for introducing the word ‘gargantuan‘,into the body politics of Ghana,when he opened investigations in the Woyome scandal which was one of the highest profiled corruption cases at the time. On 11 January 2018,Martin A.B.K Amidu was named by the President of Ghana as the Special Prosecutor for the newly created Office of the Special Prosecutor. Nana Akufo-Addo touted his anti-corruption fights as Attorney General and a private citizen as reasons for choosing Mr. Amidu,his one-time political adversary.
Rebecca Naa Okaikor Akufo-Addo is a Ghanaian public figure and the First Lady of Ghana. She is the wife of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Joe Ghartey is a Ghanaian lawyer,politician and member of the New Patriotic Party. He is a former Attorney-General of Ghana (2006–2009),Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament (2013–2017) and Railways Development Minister (2017–2021). Joe Ghartey hails from Shama in the Western Region.
The Attorney General of Ghana is the chief legal advisor to the Ghanaian government. The attorney general is also responsible for the Ministry of Justice. The Attorney General also serves as a member of the General Legal Council which regulates legal practice in Ghana.
Nicholas Yaw Boafo Adade (1927–2013) was a former supreme court judge and Attorney-General of Ghana. He was first appointed to the Supreme Court in 1980 and became acting chief justice from 1990 to 1991. He was the Attorney General of Ghana between April 1969 to February 1971 in the National Liberation Council administration and Busia government. He was Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South constituency under the Second Ghanaian Republic.

Henrietta Joy Abena Nyarko Mensa-Bonsu,is a Supreme Court Judge of the Republic of Ghana. She was nominated by president Nana Akufo-Addo. She is the 5th female member of the Court. Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court,she was a Ghanaian law professor who served as a member of the United Nations Independent Panel On Peace Operations.
Samuel Abu Jinapor,is a Ghanaian lawyer and a politician. He is a member of the New Patriotic Party and the Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency. In 2017,President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo appointed him as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations at the Office of the President,at the age of 33,the youngest in the history of Ghana to occupy such a position. He is currently the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
