Godfrey Baldacchino (born 25 April 1960) is a Maltese and Canadian social scientist. [1] He was Pro Rector (International Development & Quality Assurance) (2016-2021) and Professor of Sociology at the University of Malta. [2] Between 2016 and 2020, he was with Jim Randall, [3] the UNESCO Co-Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada (a title held in partnership with the University of Malta).
Baldacchino is former Director of the Centre for Labour Studies at the University of Malta and is chairman of its board. [4] With Alexander Gatt, Baldacchino founded the Students Astronomical Circle (SAC) in 1978. In 1984, he was elected as the first President of The Malta Astronomical Society which resulted from the merger of the SAC and the Astronomical Association of Malta. [5] He was inscribed as Honorary Life Member of the Malta Astronomical Society in 2015.
Baldacchino is founding Vice-President of the University of Malta Academic Staff Association (UMASA) and was elected as member of the Council of the University of Malta for the period 2001–2003. As Chair of the Malta Board of Cooperatives (1998–2003), [6] Baldacchino presided over a doubling of registered cooperative societies.
Baldacchino served as Canada Research Chair (Island Studies) at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada, from 2003 to 2013. [7]
Baldacchino has provided consultancy to the Malta Prime Minister and various other Ministers on several topics: the self-management system at Malta Drydocks, [8] the Student Stipend Scheme, [9] the workings of the Malta Employment and Training Corporation, a code of practice for worker-directors, and the Planning Council's plans for the South of Malta.
Baldacchino was elected President of the International Small Islands Studies Association in 2014 and Chair of the Scientific Board of RETI, the Network of Island Universities, in 2015. He created the Island Studies Journal, which he edited from 2006 to 2017, and Small States & Territories, an online open access journal, in 2018.[ citation needed ]
With Elaine Stratford and Elizabeth McMahon, he is Editor of the Rethinking the Island book series with Rowman and Littlefield International. [10]
In 2021, Baldacchino was appointed Malta's first (thematic) ambassador for islands and small states. [11]

The University Students' Council, also known in abbreviation as KSU, is a Maltese national students' union. It is the oldest extant student organization in Europe. The KSU was established by Arturo Mercieca (1878-1969), later Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca (1924-1940), in 1901 as the Comitato Permanente Universitario, also previously known as University Permanent Committee. The students union is involved in students' national and international politics.
Republic Square is a piazza in Valletta, Malta. The square was originally called Piazza Tesoreria or Piazza dei Cavallieri, since the treasury of the Order of Saint John was located in the square. After a statue of Queen Victoria was installed in the square in the 19th century, it became known as Queen's Square or Piazza Regina. Although its official name is Republic Square, it is still commonly referred to as Piazza Regina.

H. Wade MacLauchlan, is a Canadian legal academic, university administrator, politician and community leader. He served as the fifth president of the University of Prince Edward Island from 1999 to 2011, becoming president emeritus in 2012. He served as the 32nd premier of Prince Edward Island from 2015 to 2019. His government was defeated in the April 23, 2019 general election. MacLauchlan announced his intention to step down as Liberal leader on 26 April 2019, and completed his term as Premier on 9 May 2019.
Palazzo Pescatore is a palace in St. Paul's Bay, Malta. It was built in the late 19th century. Its symmetrical porticoed façades of neo-classical inspiration are similar to those of Palazzo Dragonara in St. Julian's.
Bubaqra Tower, formerly named as Saliba Tower, is a fortified house in Bubaqra, limits of Żurrieq, Malta. It was built as a country retreat in the late 16th century. The tower and its gardens have been restored, and now serve as a family retreat. Officially named as Bubaqra Palace, it is a grade 2 national monument.
Kathy Martin is a Canadian ornithologist and an expert on arctic and alpine grouse and ptarmigan, and on tree cavity-nesting vertebrates. She is a professor in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia, and was a senior research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. From 2018 to 2020 she was president of the American Ornithological Society. Martin retired from the Canadian Federal Government in December 2020, and remains an emeritus scientist.
The Forni della Signoria was a bakehouse in Valletta, Malta. It was constructed in the late 16th century by the Order of St John, and it consisted of a number of bakeries which produced bread for the inhabitants of Valletta and the surrounding area, as well as for the Order's garrison and navy.
The siege of Melite was the capture of the Byzantine city of Melite by an invading Aghlabid army in 870 AD. The siege was initially led by Halaf al-Hādim, a renowned engineer, but he was killed and replaced by Sawāda Ibn Muḥammad. The city withstood the siege for some weeks or months, but it ultimately fell to the invaders, and its inhabitants were massacred and the city was sacked.
Charles William John Eliot, commonly known as Willie Eliot or C.W.J. Eliot, was a Canadian academic and university administrator. Best known for being the third President of the University of Prince Edward Island, Eliot also served as President of the Classical Association of Canada and Chair of the Association of Atlantic Universities, among other positions. He was a member of the Order of Canada and was posthumously recognized as a founder of the University of Prince Edward Island.
The Old University Building, also known as the Valletta Campus, is the original campus of the University of Malta, located adjacent to the Church of the Jesuits in Valletta, Malta. Construction of the building began in 1595, and it originally housed a Jesuit college known as the Collegium Melitense Societatis Jesu. The building had to be repaired after being damaged in an explosion in 1634 and an earthquake in 1693.
Irene Condachi was a Maltese physician, one of only two female doctors practicing on the island during World War II. One of the founders of the school medical service, she became the medical officer for the government school and is credited with eradicating scabies in the education system.
Island studies, also known as Nissology, is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to analyzing Islands. Island studies examines the relationship between islands and islanders.
James Edward Randall was educated as a Canadian geographer and is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Prince Edward Island and scholar of Island Studies. He was the chair of the Institute of Island Studies. Randall was the UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability at the Institute of Island Studies of the University of Prince Edward Island.
Laurie Brinklow is a Canadian academic, poet, and author. She is an assistant professor of Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. She is the president of the International Small Islands Studies Association. She is the Co-ordinator of the Institute of Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island.
