Golam Dastagir Gazi (born 14 August 1948) [1] is a Bangladeshi industrialist and a politician of the Bangladesh Awami League party. He is the incumbent Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Narayanganj-1 constituency. [2] In January 2019, he was selected as the Minister of Textiles and Jute. [3]

Gazi is the chairman of Gazi TV [4] and the Chairman of Gazi Group. He is a former director of Bangladesh Cricket Board. [4]

Gazi is a recipient of Bir Protik, the fourth-highest gallantry award in Bangladesh. [5] In the liberation war he was a member of the guerilla group Crack Platoon. [6] In 2020, he was awarded Independence Day Award by the Government of Bangladesh. [7]

Early life and education

Gazi was born to Golam Kibria Gazi and Shamsunnesa Begum. [8] Gazi graduated from the University of Dhaka in 1968. [9]

Career

In 1977, Gazi was elected as a commissioner in the first election of the Dhaka City Corporation from his electoral areas — Kakrail, Sidheshwari, Malibag, Eskaton and Mogbazar. [9] Gazi started his manufacturing industries in plastic and rubber sector in 1974. [9]

Gazi is a former president of Bangladesh-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry. [10]

Personal life

Gazi is married to Hasina Gazi (b. 1955), a former mayor of Tarabo Municipality, Narayanganj. [11] [12] The couple is blessed with 2 sons. [13]

The Mukti Bahini, also known as the Bangladesh Forces, was the guerrilla resistance movement consisting of the Bangladeshi military, paramilitary and civilians during the Bangladesh Liberation War that transformed East Pakistan into Bangladesh in 1971. They were initially called the Mukti Fauj.

The Crack Platoon was a special commando team of the Mukti Bahini which was formed in 1971 during the Bangladesh Liberation War. It was formed by young members of Mukti Bahini which carried out commando operations in Dhaka and its surroundings and led by Major Khaled Mosharraf. The commandos were mostly students and civilians, received guerrilla training later in the training camps for Mukti Bahini and then engaged in battle against Pakistan Army.

It is being built for Bangladesh Army officers with residential plot purchase available for cilvilians at sectors 1 and 2. It was referred to by the name Army Housing Scheme in the past. Spread over 2133.349 acres and 17 sectors, the area will have various facilities including educational institutes, hospitals, mosques, parks, lakes, lakeside walkway and cycle track, amusement park, stadium, golf course, bus stand, taxi stand, filling stations, fire service, bridges, apartments, and commercial spaces. There will be provision for underground utility facilities. 48% of total area will be open space and 28.73% will be roads. Estimated project cost is $2 billion.
