Gopali Youth Welfare Society, known as GYWS, is a government-registered non-governmental organization in West Bengal. It was founded in 2002 and registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961 on April 20, 2005. It is run by IIT Kharagpur students under the guidance of IIT Kharagpur professors and Gopali village residents. The main areas that GYWS focuses on are child education, women empowerment, and the abolition of child labor. It has launched a free education initiative, social awareness drives, and vocational training programs.

History

GYWS was founded in 2002 and registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961, on April 20, 2005. Since then, GYWS has taken many initiatives to achieve its vision.

Media Coverage

GYWS has been publishing various articles on social and mainstream media. [1] [2] The articles are written both in national and regional newspapers and published in 3 different languages: English, Hindi and Bengali. GYWS has also conducted several workshops and events and their achievements have been mentioned in several newspapers, the latest being about the CoviRelief drive. During the Corona period, GYWS shifted to digital media. They had taken several initiatives to help the people of Gopali village and it was produced in the digital media. The link to the same can be found here. [3] The then HRD minister, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, had also posted on Twitter [4] about the work they did during the Covid period.

Pratirav

Pratirav is the quarterly newsletter of the Gopali Youth Welfare Society. Pratirav covers a broad range of subjects that not only include the various social issues but also address the daily needs.

Workshops

GYWS had also conducted various knowledge sessions in April last year. Amongst these was the “Tech as a Tool” session with Datakind- an organization depicting the power of data science in the service of humanity. The session began with a brief overview of what programs Datakind [5] conducts- such as the Datakind Labs, [6] DataCorps [7] to DataDive, [8] and Community Events. [9] They also spoke about how machine learning is helping them to work for various underprivileged communities. At the end of the session, a doubt clearing session was held on subjects such as Natural language processing. The various questions were satisfactorily answered by the panelists. The session concluded with a discussion on how technology is a two-edged sword, and one needs to be as careful while using it.

GYWS has conducted various programs for the students and teachers of Jagriti Vidya Mandir. PACE, [10] that is Parents as Co-educators, was one of them. This was done to emphasize the role of the parents in teaching their ward. Activities were sent to the students that had to be done every day and submitted within a week. Updates were taken over the weekend. A teacher training workshop was also held to emphasize the importance of activity-based learning. Teachers were also taught the use of modern-day tools using which the students could understand the various concepts better.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination conducted in India that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science for admission into the Masters Program and Job in Public Sector Companies. Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IIT Kharagpur is a law school located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. An academic unit of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, it is the first law school to be established in an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). It was set up in collaboration with the George Washington University Law School, Washington DC and is the only law school within the IIT system. It is also the first law school in India imparting full-time Intellectual Property education along with other regular courses prescribed by the Bar Council of India.

Spring Fest

Spring Fest, known as SF, is the annual social and cultural festival of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur held during January in the spring semester. The first edition was held in 1960. The 60th edition of Spring Fest was held from January 24 to 27, 2019.

Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Kharagpur (E-Cell) is a non-profit student's organization dedicated to promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship among students throughout India. Established in 2006 under the aegis of STEP, IIT Kharagpur, E-Cell has since been involved in more than 70 startup companies in the initial stages of their existence. Techniche

Techniche is the annual Techno-Management festival of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati. The festival was started in 1999 by a group of students within the IIT Guwahati campus. Spread over three days and four nights, Techniche is generally conducted towards the end of August each year.

Kharagpur I is a community development block that forms an administrative division in the Kharagpur subdivision of Paschim Medinipur district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Suman Chakraborty is professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Sir J. C. Bose National Fellow, as well as Institute/ National Academy of Engineering chair professor. He joined the institute in 2002 as assistant professor and has been a full professor since 2008.

UPAY (उपाय) or Under Privileged Advancement by Youth is a non-governmental organization which works towards the provision of quality education to the underprivileged children in India. It was founded by Varun Shrivastava, an IIT Kharagpur-graduate and NTPC Ltd Engineer, with the help of his colleagues on 12 May 2010 to make quality education available at the remote villages of India. It was registered as an NGO on 19 September 2011.

Dr B C Roy Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Medical research institute and hospital in West Bengal, India

Dr B C Roy Institute of Medical Sciences & Research is a medical school and research institute at Balarampur, outside IIT Kharagpur campus, Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal, India. It will start with a 400-bed multi-speciality hospital with specialities like Cardiac, Neurosurgery, Organ Transplantation, Oncology, Trauma and others. Beside this, it will be equipted with state-of-the art research facilities like Telemedicine, Tissue engineering, Bioelectronics etc. and expand to 750 bed capacity later. It is proposed to start with 50 undergraduate medical seats. The institute is supposed to be functional by end of 2018. The various research, academic and medical infrastructure planning is being jointly carried out by IIT Kharagpur and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi.

Gohona Bori

Gohona Bori is a dried dal dumpling. It is popular in Bengali cuisine. It is a well known food item in Purba Medinipur. It is also known as Naksha Bori. It is made with black lentil, Poppy seed and various spices. The woman of the house made the dish. In 2016, IIT Kharagpur applied to get the geographical Indication for Gohona Bori.
