Gordon Clubb (born 22 May 1953) is an Australian former rower. He was an eight-time national champion rower who represented at three world championships. He won four consecutive Australian national championship titles in a coxed four from 1977 to 1980.

Rowing family

Born in Dubbo, New South Wales, [1] Clubb attended Sydney Grammar School where he took up rowing and matriculated in 1971. His father Gordon Clubb Snr was a Sydney Rowing Club member from 1934 and a committee man from 1946. [2] Gordon Clubb Snr had rowed for Australia as a single sculler in a 1940 Trans Tasman series against New Zealand [3] and coached his sons at Sydney Rowing Club in the 1970s. Gordon's younger brother Ian Clubb rowed in champion SRC and New South Wales King's Cup crews of the late 1970s and rowed for Australia from 1976 to 1979.

Club and state rowing

Gordon Clubb first made state selection for New South Wales in 1977 in the six seat of the men's eight which contested and won the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. [4] He rowed in another King's Cup winning New South Wales crews in 1978. [5] He was a reserve for the New South Wales eight in 1979 and stroked the 1980 crew to second place. [6]

At the 1974 Australian Championships Clubb contested the double scull national title with Kim Mackney and placed fourth in that event. He also rowed to second place in a composite coxless four. [7] The following year in 1975 he contested both the coxed and coxless four titles in Sydney colours placing second and third. [8]

At the 1976 Australian Championships Clubb contested the quad scull national title in a composite Sydney/Haberfield crew and placed second in that event. [9] In 1977 he rowed to second place with Haberfield's Dick Reddel in an attempt at the coxless pair national title and that same year with his brother and Islay Lee in a Sydney coxed four he rowed to a national championship win. [10] He then successfully defended that same title in 1978, 1979 [11] and 1980 each time in the two seat. In 1978 paired with his brother he also won the national title in a coxless pair. [12] In 1979 he also rowed in an all-Sydney quad to take the quad sculls title. [13]

International representative rowing

Clubb made his Australian representative debut in the six seat of the Australian men's eight selected for the 1977 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. Six of the crew including his brother Ian were from the Sydney Rowing Club's senior eight. They missed the A final and rowed to overall tenth place. [14]

For the 1978 World Rowing Championships in Lake Karapiro, the successful New South Wales King's Cup eight was again selected and was composed of all Sydney men excepting Gary Uebergang and Athol MacDonald from Mosman. [14] With Clubb seated at six, the Australian eight placed second in their heat, third in the repechage and in the final finished fourth being edged out for third by the host nation New Zealand. [15]

At the 1979 World Rowing Championships in Lake Karapiro, sitting in front of his brother Clubb stroked the Australian coxless four which was eliminated in the repechage. [16] It was the final Australian representative appearance of both Clubb brothers.

Kim Mackney is an Australian former representative rower. He competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1972 Summer Olympics. From school until the national elite representative level and onto a long world-class masters career, Mackney rowed competitively for over fifty years. He can be credited with salvaging and re-establishing the Glebe Rowing Club in Sydney after its 1992 demise.

Edward Officer Hale is an Australian former rower. He competed at the elite level over a fifteen-year period from 1970 to 1984, primarily as a sculler. He was a fourteen time Australian national champion - nine times in a single scull, four times in crewed sculling boats and once in a sweep oared pair. He won the New Zealand national single sculls championship in 1976. He represented at two World Rowing Championships and competed in the men's single sculls event at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Chris Shinners is an Australian rower. He was a six-time Australian champion who represented at world championships and competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Perry Ward is an Australian national representative lightweight rower. He rowed in Western Australia's state selection lightweight crew for thirteen consecutive years from 2006 to 2018, winning the national title on four occasions. He represented Australia at eight senior and U23 world championships, stroking every crew in which he was selected and winning a silver medal at the 2010 World Rowing Championships.

Ian Clubb is an Australian Human Resources business executive and former Olympian rower. He was an eleven-time national champion rower who represented at four world championships and in the men's eight event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. He won five consecutive Australian national championship titles in a coxed four from 1976 to 1980.

Garry Uebergang is an Australian former rower. He was a three-time national champion and competed in the men's eight event at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Islay Lee is an Australian former rower. He was a fifteen-time national champion in both sculls and sweep-oared boats, a national representative at world championships and a dual Olympian. He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1980 Summer Olympics. From 1976 to 1980 he was Australia's prominent sweep-oared stroke, setting the pace in Sydney Rowing Club crews which won five successive national titles in the coxed four, three successive titles in a coxed pair, and in three successive King's Cup winning New South Wales selection eights.

Jim Stride is an Australian former representative rower. He was a six-time Australian national champion, raced in the Australia men's eight at the 1978 World Rowing Championships and competed in the men's coxless pair event at the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Robert Black is an Australian rower. He is a national champion, a national representative in sculling and sweep-oared boats and twice an U23 World Champion.

Edward V "Terry" O'Hanlon is an Australian former rowing coxswain. He was seven times an Australian national champion who coxed Australian representative crews at two World Rowing Championships.

Paul Francis Rowe was an Australian representative rower and elite level rowing coach. He was an eight-time Australian national champion in both sweep oared and sculling boats across both lightweight and open divisions. He was Australia's lightweight sculling representative at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. He coached scullers and crews to three Australia national title wins and to world championships and to Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

Hamish Playfair is an Australian rower. He is a four-time national champion and an Australian representative at World Rowing Championships.
