Athol MacDonald (born 3 September 1953) is an Australian former representative rower. He was a four-time national champion who competed at World Championships and in the men's eight event at the 1976 Summer Olympics. [1]

Club and state rowing

Raised in South Australia, MacDonald's senior rowing was from the Adelaide Rowing Club where his younger brother Chester was also a successful senior rower. Athol first made state selection for South Australia in 1973 in the men's eight which contested the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta. [2] He rowed in two further South Australian King's Cup eights in 1974 and 1975 stroking the 1975 crew to a second place. [3]

By 1976 MacDonald had relocated to Sydney and was rowing from the Mosman Rowing Club. He made state selection for New South Wales in 1976 in the four seat of the men's eight which contested and won the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. [4] He rowed in another King's Cup winning New South Wales crew in 1978 [5] and then in the New South Wales eights of 1979. [6]

At the 1975 Australian Championships MacDonald rowed in Adelaide colours in a composite South Australian four which contested and won the coxed four national title. [7] The 1976 Australian Rowing Championships saw an open men's eight event contested (distinct from the King's Cup) and MacDonald rowed in an all-Mosman crew to win that title. [8] In 1981 with Sydney's John Sivewright and coxed by Stephen Dadour, MacDonald won the national coxed pair title at the Australian Rowing Championships. [9]

International representative rowing

MacDonald made his Australian representative debut at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The Australian men's eight for the Montreal was mostly that year's King's Cup winning New South Wales crew excepting Malcolm Shaw in the two seat and Brian Richardson at bow. [10] With Macdonald rowing at three they commenced their Olympic campaign with a heat win in a new world record time and progressed to the final. [10] In the heat Shaw suffered a collapsed vertebra which saw him out of the eight and replaced by Peter Shakespear, the reserve. In the final the Australians finished fifth. [11] [10]

MacDonald was out of the eight for the 1977 World Rowing Championships but for the 1978 Championships in Lake Karapiro, the successful New South Wales King's Cup eight was again selected and was composed of all Sydney Rowing Club men excepting MacDonald and his Mosman club-mate Gary Uebergang. [10] The Australian eight placed second in their heat, third in the repechage and in the final finished fourth being edged out for third by the host nation New Zealand. [12]

John Clark is an Australian former rower. He was a six-time national champion who competed at world championships and in the men's eight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Edward Officer Hale is an Australian former rower. He competed at the elite level over a fifteen-year period from 1970 to 1984, primarily as a sculler. He was a fourteen time Australian national champion - nine times in a single scull, four times in crewed sculling boats and once in a sweep oared pair. He won the New Zealand national single sculls championship in 1976. He represented at two World Rowing Championships and competed in the men's single sculls event at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

He competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1980 Summer Olympics. From 1976 to 1980 he was Australia's prominent sweep-oared stroke, setting the pace in Sydney Rowing Club crews which won five successive national titles in the coxed four, three successive titles in a coxed pair, and in three successive King's Cup winning New South Wales selection eights.

Brian Richardson is an Australian former rower and rowing coach. He competed at the national elite level over a fifteen-year period representing both South Australian and Victoria. He was a representative at three world championships and at the 1976 Montreal and the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In a twenty-three year coaching career, he held national head coaching roles in both Canada and Australia from 1993 to 2008 and personally coached national crews to twelve world championship or Olympic medals.

Stuart Carter is an Australian former rowing coxswain. He was a ten-time national champion and a representative at world championships and Olympics. In 1976 still aged seventeen and in his final year of school, he coxed Sydney Rowing Club crews to three state titles in a pair, four and eight and to two national titles in a pair and a four; coxed the New South Wales representative eight to a King's Cup victory; and coxed the Australian men's eight at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Gordon Clubb is an Australian former rower. He was an eight-time national champion rower who represented at three world championships. He won four consecutive Australian national championship titles in a coxed four from 1977 to 1980.

Edward V "Terry" O'Hanlon is an Australian former rowing coxswain. He was seven times an Australian national champion who coxed Australian representative crews at two World Rowing Championships.

Paul Francis Rowe was an Australian representative rower and elite level rowing coach. He was an eight-time Australian national champion in both sweep oared and sculling boats across both lightweight and open divisions. He was Australia's lightweight sculling representative at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. He coached scullers and crews to three Australia national title wins and to world championships and to Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
