Government Arts College, Tiruchirappalli is an India Government college located in Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, India

The college was established in 1973. The college is affiliated with Bharathidasan University. [1] This college offers courses in arts, commerce and science. [2] Currently, the college offer 17 undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

History

The College was established in 1973 to serve the children from the families of farmers and economically and socially underprivileged people around BHEL, Trichy.

Bharathidasan, was a 20th-century Tamil poet and rationalist writer whose literary works handled mostly socio-political issues. He was deeply influenced by the Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi and named himself "Bharathi dasan" meaning follower or adherent of Bharathi. His greatest influence was Periyar and his self-respect movement. Bharathidasan's writings served as a catalyst for the growth of the Self-Respect Movement in Tamil Nadu. In addition to poetry, his views found expression in other forms such as plays, film scripts, short stories and essays. The Government of Puducherry union territory has adopted the song of Invocation to Mother Tamil, written by Bharathidasan as the state song of Puducherry.

Bharathidasan University (BDU) is a university in the city of Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on Tiruchirappalli-Pudukkottai National Highway 336. It has affiliated colleges in the districts of Ariyalur district, Karur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Tiruchirapalli. It is a recognised university, supported by the University Grants Commission of India. All major faculties of science and arts are represented. TEC was founded by Annai Santhiya Educational Health & Charitable Trust, Woraiyur, Tiruchirappalli with the permission of the Government of Tamil Nadu. P S Manisundaram was an Indian educationist and pioneer of computer science education. He was born in Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma). He graduated from Loyola College, Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, India. After completing master's degree studies in civil engineering at Nova Scotia University, Canada, in 1958, he returned to Tamil Nadu and started his career as a lecturer at Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. He was the first principal of the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. He became the first vice chancellor of the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, when the university was created in 1982. Manisundaram was associated with many universities and educational institutions in India and around the world. He was conferred Doctor of Engineering by Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada in 1984. He died in Chennai (Madras), India, on October 26, 2013.
