Govind Kanhai (born 7 July 1964) is an Indian artist and painter. He completed his post graduation in philosophy from Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University formerly known as Agra University.

Introduction

Kanhai is known for his innovative techniques in oil paints, involving the use of pure gold leaf and sparkling gems. He has painted for more than 30 years and undertakes figure work, Bhava Darshan and embossing. Working with his family, he has revived the significance of tradition of gold paintings. Career

The Kanhai family has undertaken many commissions for the Parliament of India and Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He and his brother have both painted portraits of the first prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the former Deputy Prime Minister of India Lal Krishna Advani. [5] [6] In year 2007, Govind had displayed his painting at Nehru Center, Mumbai valuing about 20 million Indian rupees (approx US$300,000) [7]

Family

Govind is the son of Kanhai Chitrakar who was awarded Padma Shri for his contribution to art, by the President of India in 2000. [8] Padma Shri (also Padmashree) is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India. [9] After his death, Hema Malini who is Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha inaugurated Padhamshree Kanhai Chitrakar Marg in honor of his memories. [10]

Govind's elder brother Krishn Kanhai was also awarded Padma Shri in 2004. [11]

Madhubani art is a style of painting practiced in the Mithila region of India and Nepal. It is named after the Madhubani district of Bihar, India, which is where it originated. Jitwarpur and Ranti are the two most notable cities associated with the tradition and evolution of Madhubani art. The art was traditionally practiced by female members of Brahman and Kayastha castes. Artists create these paintings using a variety of mediums, including their own fingers, or twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks. The paint is created using natural dyes and pigments. Ram Kumar was an Indian artist and writer who has been described as one of India's foremost abstract painters. He was associated with the Progressive artists' group along with greats like M.F. Kesava Shankar Pillai, better known as Shankar, was an Indian cartoonist. He is considered the father of political cartooning in India. He founded Shankar's Weekly, India's Punch in 1948. Shankar's Weekly also produced cartoonists like Abu Abraham, Ranga and Kutty, he closed down the magazine during the Emergency of 25 June 1975. Padmashree Singannachar Narasimha Swamy was an Indian artist who lived and worked in India his whole life. An alumnus of Chamaraja Technical Institute, Mysore and Sir J.J School of Arts, Bombay, Swamy, as affectionately referred to, moved around in high circles, with friendships with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Lord Mountbatten of Burma and the like. His paintings and other works of art can be found in various government offices, museums and personal collections around the world.

Khangembam Mangi Singh, popularly known as Guru Pena Mangi, was an Indian musician, known for his expertise on the Manipuri traditional musical instrument Pena. The Government of India honored him in 2011, with the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri.

Kanhai Chitrakar was an Indian artist and painter, credited with the revival of the heritage painting discipline of Kanhai Art, a method of painting where gold powder, gold leaves and gem stones are used.

Krishn Kanhai is an Indian artist and painter, specialist in portrait, realistic, contemporary paintings and on lord Radha-Krishna theme paintings. A Padmshri awardee, Kanhai is described as an artist with the midas touch.

Pratapaditya Pal is an Indian scholar of Southeast Asian and Himalayan art and culture, specializing particularly in the history of art of India, Nepal and Tibet. He has served as a curator of South Asian art at several prominent US museums including Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, where he has organized more than 22 major exhibitions and helped build the museums' collection. Muhammad Shafi Ali Khan, popularly known as Bekal Utsahi, was an Indian poet, writer and politician. He was a congressman close to Indira Gandhi and a Member of Parliament in the Upper House Rajya sabha. He received several national awards, including the Padma Shri in 1976 and Yash Bharti.

Sushil Kumar Jain known professionally as Sushil Doshi is an Indian journalist, writer, sports commentator and the first cricket commentator in Hindi. Born to Niranjanlal and Madan Kunwar at Indore, in the second largest Indian city of Madhya Pradesh, he graduated in engineering from Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) Indore and started his commentating career in 1968 at the Nehru Stadium for a Ranji Trophy match between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Over the years, he is reported to have covered nine Cricket World Cups, 85 test matches and over 400 One Day Internationals, besides several Twenty20 Internationals. His contributions are reported in making cricket commentary in Hindi popular. Imtiaz Qureshi was an Indian chef known for reviving the Dum Pukht cooking tradition and creating restaurant brands including Bukhara and Dum Pukht. He was a master chef at ITC Hotels, an Indian luxury hotel chain. Baua Devi is a Mithila painting artist from Jitwarpur village of Madhubani District in Bihar. Mithila painting is an ancient folk art that originated in the region. It is recognized as a series of complex geometric and linear patterns traced on the walls of a house's inner chambers. It was later transferred to handmade paper and canvases. Baua Devi won the National Award in 1984 and received the Padma Shri in 2017.

Deshamanya Vajira Chitrasena is a veteran Sri Lankan traditional dancer, choreographer and teacher. Vajira is regarded as Sri Lanka's first prima ballerina. She is the first Sri Lankan woman to practice the traditional Kandyan dance which was traditionally performed only by men. Vajira is credited for creating brand for female style of Kandyan dancing and set the tone for women to become ritual dancers. She was married to Chitrasena who was a well known legendary dancer and dance guru. On 26 January 2020, she along with late professor Indra Dassanayake was conferred with the Padma Shri award which is one of the highest Indian civilian awards coinciding with the 71st Republic Day of India.
