Grace Jeffers is an Australian writer, historian, educator and artist based in New York. [1] She pioneered and continues to lead an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to the study of materials. Her writings and lectures draw on 20th century art, design and cultural history, emphasizing the intelligent use of synthetic and manmade materials in the practice of design.
Jeffers has been described as "a pioneer in the industry due to her focus on actual materials, rather than the objects they become," by the American Society of Interior Designers.[ This quote needs a citation ] She is referenced in The Museum of Modern Art Design Encyclopedia, published by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Jeffers has been involved in design since she was a teenager [3] and her entrepreneurship started early too. [4]
She has always been an innovator in conservation and her solo restoration of The Ralph Sr. and Sunny Wilson House earned a National Merit Award for Historic Preservation from the National Trust for the preservation in 1999. [5] The house, completed in 1959, is distinguished by its extensive and innovative use of use plastic laminate throughout, including laminated wall paneling, shower surrounds and the first known post-formed countertop edges. The Wilson House became the first vernacular mid-century modern structure ever awarded National Landmark status when it was designated a significant architectural structure by the Texas Historical Commission in 1998. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only structure listed because of its use of materials.
In 2009, Jeffers completed the restoration of a Cold War-era submarine, the USS Growler, for the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York.
Jeffers writes and lectures on design across the U.S. and in Canada, frequently on the attributed values of natural and manmade materials and the environmental impacts of material selection. She argues that "we should understand what truly is wild and embrace how synthetics … can preserve nature…" [6]
Her presentations on design and materials have been sponsored by the American Society of Industrial Designers (ASID), the Interior Design Continuing Education Council Inc. (IDCEC), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the National Exposition of Contract Furnishings (NeoCon). At NeoCon 2016, Jeffers’ lecture on Global Forestry 101 addressed the relationship between wood products and their forests of origin, identifying threatened and endangered wood species. [7]
Jeffers works as a design consultant for several American material manufacturers, including Wilsonart, a manufacturer of high pressure laminates, and MeadWestvaco, a packaging company. Her Lustralite® product line for MeadWestvaco (now Onyx Specialty Papers) has been in production for over a decade. [8]
In 2003, she conceived the Wilsonart-sponsored chair design class and student design competition, "Wilsonart Challenges." [9] For the past 13 year she has been the creative director of the program, co-teaching each class, a final judge and a mentor to all the students who've entered. The annual competition aims to foster the careers of emerging furniture designers in North America by challenging students to push past design conventions and create an iconic chair. [10] Each year, Wilsonart partners with a different design school in the oldest running program of its type the United States. [11]
In 1999 she created the "Millennium Collection" of custom-designed laminates for Wilsonart. The collection featured the work of 22 artists, including ceramicist Jonathan Adler, furniture makers Lloyd Schwan and Nick Dine, industrial designer Karim Rasid, and illustrator Mark Todd.13 [12]
Jeffers is a listed notable alumni of The Bard Graduate Center.
Jeffers has written extensively on design, its design history and materials. She has served as a contributor and design editor to architectural trade magazines. Her articles have appeared in such publications as O at Home, Metropolitan Home and Interiors & Sources. She is currently writing a collection of essays and a design history of Formica. Jeffers contributed an essay to Skin: Surface, Substance, and Design [13] authored by Ellen Lupton. The book accompanied an exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York.

Eileen Gray was an Irish architect with no formal training and furniture designer who became a pioneer of the Modern Movement in architecture. Over her career, she was associated with many notable European artists of her era, including Kathleen Scott, Adrienne Gorska, Le Corbusier, and Jean Badovici, with whom she was romantically involved. Her most famous work is the house known as E-1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France.
The Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture is a graduate research institute and gallery located in New York City. It is affiliated with Bard College, located in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. The gallery occupies a six-story townhouse at 18 West 86th Street while the academic building and library are located at 38 West 86th Street.
Aino Maria Marsio-Aalto was a Finnish architect and a pioneer of Scandinavian design. She is known as the design partner of architect Alvar Aalto, with whom she worked for 25 years, and as a co-founder with him, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl of the design company Artek, collaborating on many its most well-known designs. As Artek's first artistic director, her creative output spanned textiles, lamps, glassware, and buildings. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and MoMA has included her work in nine exhibitions, the first of which was Aalto: Architecture and Furniture in 1938. Other major exhibitions were at the Barbican Art Gallery in London and Chelsea Space in London. Aino Aalto has been exhibited with Pablo Picasso.
A countertop, also counter top, counter, benchtop, worktop or kitchen bench, bunker is a raised, firm, flat, and horizontal surface. They are built for work in kitchens or other food preparation areas, bathrooms or lavatories, and workrooms in general. The surface is frequently installed upon and supported by cabinets, positioned at an ergonomic height for the user and the particular task for which it is designed. A countertop may be constructed of various materials with different attributes of functionality, durability and aesthetics, and may have built-in appliances, or accessory items relative to the intended application.
Charlotte Perriand was a French architect and designer. Her work aimed to create functional living spaces in the belief that better design helps in creating a better society. In her article "L'Art de Vivre" from 1981 she states "The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living — living in harmony with man's deepest drives and with his adopted or fabricated environment." Charlotte liked to take her time in a space before starting the design process. In Perriand's Autobiography, "Charlotte Perriand: A Life of Creation", she states: "I like being alone when I visit a country or historic site. I like being bathed in its atmosphere, feeling in direct contact with the place without the intrusion of a third party." Her approach to design includes taking in the site and appreciating it for what it is. Perriand felt she connected with any site she was working with or just visiting she enjoyed the living things and would reminisce on a site that was presumed dead.

Grete Juel Jalk was a Danish furniture designer. From the 1960s, she did much to enhance Denmark's reputation for modern furniture design with her clear, comfortable lines. She also edited the Danish magazine Mobilia and compiled a four-volume work on Danish furniture.

Consoweld or Consoweld Laminated Plastic is a type of High Pressure Laminate, similar to Formica decorative laminate. It was produced by the Consoweld Corporation of Wisconsin Rapids in the 1950s. Consoweld laminate was originally developed for several different products from gaskets to caskets during WWII. Starting in 1953, the company saw an opportunity in civilian applications producing Decorative Laminate for partitions and countertops. Throughout the next several decades, Consoweld was a major producer of Decorative Laminate, on par with Formica, to the extent that Sears & Roebuck carried some of their products in their catalog.
