Graham Van Pelt is a Canadian musician currently based on Salt Spring Island. He performed in Montreal based acts Miracle Fortress and Think About Life throughout the 2000s. Since 2018 Van Pelt has been releasing material under his own name.

Life and career

In 2005 Van Pelt founded Think About Life with Matt Shane, and Martin Cesar. The group released two albums via Alien8 Recordings and toured North America, Europe, and Asia between 2005-2011. [1] The group reunited for a performance at 16th edition of POP Montreal in 2017. [2]

Between 2005 and 2014, Van Pelt released material under the moniker Miracle Fortress. He released two albums, and a series of singles, under this name via Montreal's Secret City Records. His debut Five Roses was shortlisted for the 2007 edition of the Polaris Music Prize. [3] Miracle Fortress' sophomore album Was I the Wave? marked the beginning of a more electronic direction for Van Pelt. [3]

In 2018, Van Pelt announced that he would be releasing new material under his own name. [3] His debut album Time Travel was released on October 19, 2018, via Arbutus Records. [4] He supported the release with multiple tours across North America and Europe, including dates supporting with Kllo, COMA, and Blue Hawaii, and performances at the Red Bull Festival Montreal, Zemlika Festival, The New Colossus, Savannah Stopover, Focus Wales, Great Escape, and Festival Santa Teresa. [5]

On April 17, 2020, Van Pelt released the Sense Appeal EP via Arbutus Records and No Bad Days. [6] The EP features remixes from Yu Su and Gene Tellem.

Salt Spring: Sun and Shadow, a collection of instrumental tracks recorded by Van Pelt on Salt Spring Island was released on May 28, 2021, via Arbutus Records. [7]

<i>Five Roses</i> (album) 2007 studio album by Miracle Fortress

Five Roses is the first album by Miracle Fortress, released on May 22, 2007. On July 10, 2007, the shortlist for the Polaris Music Prize was revealed. Five Roses was announced as a finalist, alongside such other acts as Arcade Fire, Julie Doiron, and Chad VanGaalen. The winner was announced at a gala ceremony on September 24, 2007, with the award going to Patrick Watson.

<i>Watery Grave</i> (EP) 2005 EP by Miracle Fortress

The Watery Grave EP was Graham Van Pelt's first release under his solo project Miracle Fortress. The self-released five-song EP was recorded in 2005 at Friendship Cove, a recording studio/indie rock venue owned by Van Pelt and fellow friend Jack Dylan. The success of Watery Grave gained Van Pelt the attention of record label Secret City of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This led to a collaboration that yielded his first full-length album Five Roses.

Think About Life is an indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, formed in 2005.

Octoberman is a Canadian indie rock music group based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Fronted by singer-songwriter Marc Morrissette, the band also includes Tavo Diez de Bonilla on bass, Marshall Bureau on drums, as well as contributions from a number of frequent guest musicians.

Braids is a Canadian art rock band from Calgary, Alberta. Braids currently consists of Raphaelle Standell-Preston, Austin Tufts and Taylor Smith. <i>Was I the Wave?</i> 2011 studio album by Miracle Fortress

Was I the Wave? is the second studio album by Miracle Fortress, released on April 26, 2011. The album departs from the indie rock of Five Roses, and is instead more of an electronic offering. As with Five Roses, all songs were composed, arranged, performed, produced, and engineered by Graham Van Pelt. For live performances, Van Pelt is accompanied on-stage by fellow Think About Life bandmate Greg Napier.

Arbutus Records

Arbutus Records is a Montreal based record label and management company founded by Sebastian Cowan in 2009. The label is named after the street by the same name in Vancouver, where Cowan grew up. The label have also begun expanding outside of Montreal, signing international artist Σtella, from Athens, Greece, on April 16, 2019, and Toronto-based trio Rapport on August 28, 2019.

Blue Hawaii are a Canadian electronic music duo from Montreal, Quebec, composed of Braids member Raphaelle "Ra" Standell-Preston and Alex "Agor" Kerby. They have released an EP, Blooming Summer (2010) and three studio albums, Untogether (2013), Tenderness (2017) and Open Reduction Internal Fixation (2019) all on Arbutus Records.
