Grand Anicut Canal System or Puthu Aru or Kallanai Canal is a man made canal in Tamil Nadu, constructed as part of Cauvery-Mettur project during 1925-1934. British Engineer Colonel W M Ellis, who is also the architect of Mettur Dam, designed this canal on the request of C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, the Diwan of Travancore [1]
The canal starts at the right flank of Grand Anicut (Kallanai Dam) and passes through the Thanjavur & Pudukkottai districts. In Thanjavur, the canal passes near the Brihadisvara Temple. The length of the main canal is 148 km & there are 327 branch canals spanning to a total length of 1,232 km. The canal irrigates 2.5 lakh acres of land. [2]
At its peak, the canal can carry water upto 4,400 cu ft. [3] A mega upgradation project at the cost of 2,640 crore was announced to improve the water carrying capacity of the canal. Public interest litigations were filed against laying concrete flooring as it would affect the percolation of groundwater. [4] [5] [6]
The Kaveri is one of the major Indian rivers flowing through the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Kaveri river rises at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri range in the Western Ghats, Kodagu district of the state of Karnataka, at an elevation of 1,341 m above mean sea level and flows for about 800 km before its outfall into the Bay of Bengal. It reaches the sea in Poompuhar in Mayiladuthurai district. It is the third largest river – after Godavari and Krishna – in southern India, and the largest in the State of Tamil Nadu, which, on its course, bisects the state into north and south. In ancient Tamil literature, the river was also called Ponni.

There is a park at the base of the dam called Ellis Park maintained by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department. It provides irrigation and drinking water facilities for more than 12 districts of Tamil Nadu and hence is revered as the life and livelihood-giving asset of Tamil Nadu.
Mamannar Kalingarayan Canal is a 56.2-mile (90.5 km) long irrigation canal in the Erode district, Tamil Nadu, India. It was constructed by Chieftain Mamannar Kalingarayan Gounder and completed in 1283. The canal's source is the Kalingarayan Anicut dam near Bhavani, Erode. The canal irrigates approximately 15,743 acres (6,371 ha) of agricultural land.

Vykuntapuram Barrage is an Indian barrage and water storage project. It is under construction on Krishna River 23 kilometers upstream of existing Prakasam Barrage with FRL 25M. It is designed to store 10 TMC of flood water coming from the Vyra and Munneru rivers. The backwater of this dam will extend beyond Pokkunuru to the toe of Pulichintala dam. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for this project on 13 February 2019.

Janampet Barrage is a proposed barrage (dam) across Godavari River with full pond level (FPL) 67m. It would be located at Janampet village, Pinapaka, Bhadradri Kothagudem, India. This barrage was proposed as part of a proposal to link Godavari, Krishna, Penna and Cauvery rivers, which is part of Indian Rivers Interlinking Project.
Thoonakkadavu Dam is located on the Thoonakkadavu River, a tributary of the Parambikulam River, at Thoonakkadavu in the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary in the Muthalamada Panchayath of Palakkad District, Kerala. It is a small storage reservoir that is a part of the Parambikulam-Aliyar Irrigation Project. The Peruvaripallam Dam is connected to the Parambikulam Dam by a canal through a 2.5 km long underground tunnel. The Poringalkuthu reservoir gets water from catchments downstream of Parambikulam and Thunakadavu dams.
