Richard Marinus Anthonius Groenendaal is a Dutch former professional cyclo-cross cyclist who rides for the AA Drink team. Groenendaal won the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in 2000 and the overall titles in the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup 1997–1998, 2000–2001 and 2003–2004 and in the Cyclo-cross Superprestige in 1997–1998 and 2000–2001.
Rolf Wolfshohl is a former professional road bicycle racing and cyclo-cross racing cyclist from Germany. Wolfshohl is best known in cyclo-cross for winning the world championship three times, and in road racing for winning the 1965 Vuelta a España. He won the German National Road Race in 1968.

The Cyclo-cross Koppenberg is a cyclo-cross race held in Oudenaarde, Belgium, which is part of the BPost Bank Trophy. The cyclo-cross race uses the Koppenberg climb that has been used many times in the Belgian Classic the Tour of Flanders. This is a very steep and cobbled climb that is part of the course of which the riders do eight laps. Fifteen thousand spectators were reported to have watched the 2006 edition of the event which was won by Belgian Sven Nys.
Adri van der Poel is a retired Dutch cyclist. Van der Poel was a professional from 1981 to 2000. His biggest wins included 6 classics, two stages of the Tour de France and the World Cyclo-Cross Championships in 1996. He also obtained the second place and silver medal in the World Road Championships in 1983 behind Greg LeMond and five second places in the World Cylo-Cross championships. The Grand Prix Adri van der Poel is named after him.
Dominique Arnould is a former professional road, cyclo-cross and mountain bike cyclist. As a professional, the greatest wins in Arnould’s career were the World Cyclo-Cross World Championships in 1993 and a stage win in the 1992 Tour de France. In addition Arnould was the Cyclo-Cross Champion of France five times between 1989 and 2003. He also raced professionally for the Giant mountain bike team, earning several top ten results at world championships in this discipline as well. He retired from professional cycling in 2004 and assumed the position of Directeur Sportif for the French ProTour cycling team Bbox/Bouygues Télécom, now the Continental Professional Team Europcar.
The British National Cyclo-cross Championships are held annually. The winners of each event are awarded with a symbolic white cycling jersey featuring blue and red stripes, which can be worn by the rider at other cyclo-cross events in the country to show their status as national champion. The champion's stripes can be combined into a sponsored rider's team kit design for this purpose.

As in the previous years, four events were scheduled. The event was the biggest Cyclo-cross World Championship yet, in terms of attendance. About 61000 people headed down to Koksijde on Sunday for the main event.

The 2016–2017 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup – also known as the Telenet UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup for sponsorship reasons – was a season long cyclo-cross competition, organised by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The competition took place between 21 September 2016 and 22 January 2017, over a total of nine events. The defending champions were Wout van Aert in the men's competition and Sanne Cant in the women's competition.
