Grantown-on-Spey (West) railway station was opened with the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway in 1863. Originally appearing on timetables as 'Grantown', the name was changed by British Railways. At the same time, the former GNSR station 'Grantown-on-Spey' was renamed similarly as 'Grantown-on-Spey (East)'.
The station was located to the south of Grantown-on-Spey, just off the B9102, at the end of Woodlands Terrace. The woodlands to the east of the station location are named 'Station Wood' on OS maps available when the railway was open.
The station closed along with line to Aviemore on 18 October 1965. [1] The goods service had ceased earlier that year on 5 July.
No replacement bus services are available between Forres and Grantown-on-Spey. A rail connection is available by travelling to Carrbridge. Buses are available to Aviemore and Inverness. There is no public transport across the Dava moor.
The station building was bulldozed in the early 1980s and now fills the gap between the platforms at Grantown-on-Spey (West) station. The stationmaster's house remains.
The Strathspey Railway is raising funds to complete their "Rails to Grantown" project. Work and fundraising are underway to re-open the route, and construct a new station at the location of Grantown-on-Spey (West).

Grantown-on-Spey is a town in the Highland Council Area, historically within the county of Moray. It is located on a low plateau at Freuchie beside the river Spey at the northern edge of the Cairngorm mountains, about 20 miles (32 km) south-east of Inverness.
Badenoch and Strathspey was a local government district, created in 1975 as one of eight districts within the Highland region in Scotland. The Inverness and Perth Junction Railway (I&PJR) was a railway company that built a line providing a more direct route between Inverness and the south for passengers and goods. Up to the time of its opening, the only route was a circuitous way through Aberdeen. The I&PJR was built from a junction with the friendly Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway at Forres to the Perth and Dunkeld Railway at Dunkeld.
The Strathspey Railway was a railway company in Scotland that ran from Dufftown to Boat of Garten. It was proposed locally but supported by the larger Great North of Scotland Railway (GNoSR), which wanted to use it as an outlet towards Perth. The GNoSR had to provide much of the funding, and the value of traffic proved to be illusory. The line opened in 1863 to Abernethy, but for the time being was unable to make the desired connection to the southward main line. Although later some through goods traffic developed, the route never achieved its intended purpose.
The Keith and Dufftown Railway was a railway company in Scotland. Its line ran between Dufftown and Keith on the main line between Inverness and Aberdeen. The company was formed in 1857, but it struggled to attract investors and for some years was unable to proceed with construction.

Drumuillie is a small hamlet, which lies 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Boat of Garten and 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Aviemore in Inverness-shire, Scottish Highlands and is in the Scottish council area of Highland. The village is located at the centre of Abernethy Forest and just to the west of the River Spey.
Broomhill railway station or Broomhill for Nethy Bridge railway station is a reconstructed railway station on the former Highland Railway main line which was originally built to serve the small villages of Nethy Bridge and Dulnain Bridge in Strathspey. It is at present the eastern terminus of the Strathspey Steam Railway.
The River Dulnain is a major left bank tributary of the River Spey in northeast Scotland. It rises in the eastern part of the Monadhliath Mountains and flows in a generally northeastward direction through uninhabited country to Sluggan, where it is crossed by Sluggan Bridge, constructed by General Wade to carry a military road. Turning more easterly, the Dulnain passes beneath the modern A9 road which bypasses Carrbridge, the mainline railway and, in Carrbridge itself, the Carrbridge Packhorse Bridge that gives the village its name and the bridge carrying the B9153 road. The final section flowing east-northeast to the village of Dulnain Bridge is accompanied by the A938 road. The river empties into the Spey after passing beneath the A95 road and the disused bridge of the former Strathspey railway.
The Dava Way is a 38 km (24 mi) long-distance path that mostly follows the route of the former Highland Railway between Grantown and Forres. The railway line, built as a route between Inverness and Perth, opened in 1863 and closed in 1965. The route was reopened as a long distance path in 2005. It is listed as one of Scotland's Great Trails by NatureScot, and links directly to two further Great Trails: the Moray Coast Trail and the Speyside Way. It is currently the shortest of the Great Trails, but can be combined with sections of the Moray Coast Trail and Speyside Way to form a 153 km (95 mi) circular route known as the Moray Way. About 5,000 people use the path every year, of whom about 400 complete the entire route.
