Granville Mall is a pedestrian mall located in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. [1] It was formerly part of Granville Street, until nearby developments, such as the Cogswell Interchange, and Scotia Square, rendered this section traffic-wise and it was converted into a pedestrian mall.[ citation needed ] The buildings lining the street house a large variety of pubs and stores, and also part of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The nearby Halifax Harbour contributed significantly to the thriving trade activity along the street. [1]
Granville Street was originally a residential area with wooden houses and garden lots. However, it gradually transformed into a commercial center, particularly after the railway line to Windsor was constructed, and the signing of the treaty reciprocity with the United States in 1845, which reduced custom barriers and increased trade. On 9 September 1859, 60 buildings in downtown Halifax, including all wooden shops in the north of Granville Street, were destroyed by a fire. [3] [4] This event led to the reconstruction of the mall by the Toronto architectural firm of William Thomas & Sons. The firm designed a unified streetscape with cast iron store fronts, Italianate detailing, and forms that would soon dominate prime Halifax building. The buildings were constructed using stone and brick, which became the standard materials for new construction in the city. [2] [5] [6]

These properties helped make Halifax prosperous in Canada's early days by aiding trade and commerce, but they were also frequently used as vehicles for smuggling and privateering. During the War of 1812, two of the most successful Nova Scotian privateer ships during this time period were the Liverpool Packet and the Sir John Sherbrooke.
Morris House is the oldest wooden residence in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the former office of Charles Morris. The house was originally located at 1273 Hollis Street, and since January 2013 has been located at 2500 Creighton Street. The Morris family used the house as their office for eighty years. There were four generations of the Morris family, a dynasty of Surveyor Generals of Nova Scotia, who used the building as their office. Due to the efforts of the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia and others, the house has been salvaged from demolition in 2009. The original property was owned by Dennis Heffernan who sold it to Charles Morris Jr. in 1777, who likely had his father stay with him.
The Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia is a non-profit society dedicated to the advocacy for and conservation of Nova Scotia's architectural and cultural heritage. The Cogswell Interchange is a multi-level highway interchange in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was built as the first stage of a greater scheme for an elevated freeway, called Harbour Drive, which would have run south through downtown and necessitated demolition of much of the downtown building stock. The plan was halted in the face of significant public opposition, but the Cogswell Interchange remains a visible reminder, occupying a large amount of prime land and posing a barrier to pedestrian movement.
