Gregory W. Vogle (born 1958) is an American intelligence officer who served as the Director of the National Clandestine Service from January 29,2015,until August 2017. [2] [3] [4] He is a recipient of the Distinguished Intelligence Cross, the nation's highest intelligence award for valor, often described as a Medal of Honor equivalent, for his actions to defend Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his troops against an attack on their position by the Taliban in Tarinkot,Afghanistan.
After graduating from the Citadel,Vogle served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry officer from 1981 to 1986. [5] Vogle joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1986 as a paramilitary operations officer within the CIA's Special Activities Division (SAD) and deployed to Africa,Bosnia,Pakistan and Middle East. He worked with various parties in the United States Intelligence Community, including the United States Department of Defense.
On October 9,2001 Hamid Karzai entered Afghanistan and linked up with his supporters to seize Tarinkot. Taliban forces launched a counterattack against Karzai's lightly armed forces and he was forced to withdraw. On November 3,Karzai contacted a member of the Special Activities Center, identified only as "Greg V." who immediately acted by linking up Karzai and himself with his joint CIA/Army Special Forces/JSOC team (consisted of 110 CIA officers,316 Special Forces soldiers and 12 Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) raiders) designated Echo team. From there, they made a nighttime insertion back into Tarinkot. Karzai then went from village to village seeking support to fight against the Taliban. On November 17,a large battle ensued. Several of Karzai's new recruits fled, but Vogle took command and ran between defensive positions shouting,"If necessary, die like men!". The line held and as CIA Director George Tenet said in his book Center of the Storm,"It was a seminal moment. Had Karzai's position been overrun,as appeared likely for much of November 17,the entire future of the Pashtun rebellion in the south could have ended." Vogle was awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Cross, the CIA's highest award for valor, and the equivalent of the Medal of Honor for those in the intelligence community. [6] [7]
Later on December 5,Karzai was leading his resistance force against the Taliban at Khandahar, their capital and one of their last remaining strongholds. Vogle was the lead paramilitary advisor to Karzai in this battle when,as a result of a mistake in calculating an air strike,a bomb was dropped on their position. Vogle threw his body on Karzai and saved his life. The same day Khandahar fell and Karzai was named the interim Prime Minister. [6] [7] [8]
Vogle was awarded the Intelligence Star in 2003 for heroism during classified operations in Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Vogle then served as station chief in Kabul,Afghanistan from 2004 to 2006 and 2009 to 2010 with tours at CIA headquarters as deputy chief of a Branch in SAD and chief of Ground Branch within Special Operations Group,Special Activities Division. In January 2015 Vogle was selected as chief of National Clandestine Service, later renamed as Directorate of Operations. After retiring from the CIA in 2017,agency director Gina Haspel selected Elizabeth Kimber,a 34-year career CIA officer,to succeed Vogle. [9]
In November 2020,Vogle was named a volunteer member of the Joe Biden presidential transition Agency Review Team to support transition efforts related to the United States Intelligence Community. [10] Vogle served as a Senior Advisor at McChrystal Group,an advisory firm based in Alexandria,Virginia, from 2017 to 2021. [11] He currently works at Texas A&M University as a Professor of Practice and Director of The Bush School's Department of International Affairs. [12]

Shkin Naryab is a town that is the capital of Gomal District,Paktika Province,Afghanistan, located about a kilometer west of the newer town and bazaar of Angur Ada in the Barmal District of Paktika. Shortly after the September 11 attacks, the United States declared the war on terror and subsequently led a multinational military operation against Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. The stated goal was to dismantle al-Qaeda,which had executed the attacks under the leadership of Osama bin Laden, and to deny Islamist militants a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by toppling the Taliban government. The United Kingdom was a key ally of the United States, offering support for military action from the start of the invasion preparations. The American military presence in Afghanistan greatly bolstered the Northern Alliance, which had been locked in a losing fight with the Taliban during the Afghan Civil War. Prior to the beginning of the United States' war effort, the Taliban had seized around 85% of Afghanistan's territory as well as the capital city of Kabul, effectively confining the Northern Alliance to Badakhshan Province and smaller surrounding areas. The American-led invasion on 7 October 2001,marked the first phase of what would become the 20-year-long War in Afghanistan.
The Intelligence Star is an award given by the Central Intelligence Agency to its officers for "voluntary acts of courage performed under hazardous conditions or for outstanding achievements or services rendered with distinction under conditions of grave risk". The award citation is from the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and specifically cites actions of "extraordinary heroism". It is the third-highest award given by the Central Intelligence Agency, behind the Distinguished Intelligence Cross and Distinguished Intelligence Medal, and is analogous to the Silver Star, the US military award for extraordinary heroism in combat. Only a few dozen people have received this award, making it one of the rarest valor awards awarded by the US government.

It is given for "a voluntary act or acts of extraordinary heroism involving the acceptance of existing dangers with conspicuous fortitude and exemplary courage". The Battle of Tarinkot took place in 2001 during the War in Afghanistan. On November 14,2001,ODA 574 and Hamid Karzai inserted into Uruzgan Province via 4 MH-60K helicopters with a small force of guerrillas. In response to the approach of Karzai's force, the inhabitants of the town of Tarinkot revolted and expelled their Taliban administrators. Karzai traveled to Tarinkot to meet with the town elders. While he was there, the Taliban marshaled a force of 500 men to retake Tarinkot. Karzai's small force plus the American contingent, which consisted of US Army Special Forces from ODA 574 and their US Air Force Combat Controller,Tech Sergeant Alex Yoshimoto, were deployed in front of the town to block their advance. Relying heavily on close air support directed by Yoshimoto, the American/Afghan force managed to halt the Taliban advance and drive them away from the town.

Pakistan's principal intelligence and covert action agency,Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI),has historically conducted a number of clandestine operations in its western neighbor,Afghanistan. ISI's covert support to militant jihadist insurgent groups in Afghanistan, the Pashtun-dominated former Federally Administered Tribal Areas, and Kashmir has earned it a wide reputation as the primary progenitor of many active South Asian jihadist groups.
