Gregory Nthatisi is a South African African National Congress politician,anti-apartheid activist and Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) veteran serving as the mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality since 2023.
Nthatsi was a member of the ANC's military wing,Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) during apartheid. By 2020,he was the secretary-general of the MK Council. [1]
In January 2023,Nthatisi was one of three candidates nominated by the ANC to replace Mxolisi Siyonzana as mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality after the party decided to fire Siyonzana for poor service delivery. [2] In early-March 2023,the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress selected Nthathisi to replace Siyonzana as mayor. [3] He was sworn in as a councillor on 28 March 2023. [4] On 14 April 2023,Nthatisi and the ANC boycotted a council meeting to the elect the metro's new mayor,however,since two expelled ANC councillors attended the meeting,the meeting reached a quorum and Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats president Papi Mokoena was elected mayor unopposed. [5] The ANC subsequently approached the Bloemfontein High Court which granted the party an urgent interdict that set aside Mokoena's election as mayor. [6]
Nthatisi was then elected as acting mayor on 26 April 2023,receiving 50 out of the 93 votes cast. [7] Nthatisi was elected mayor on 13 October 2023. [8]
The Day of Reconciliation is a public holiday in South Africa held annually on 16 December. The holiday came into effect in 1995 after the end of apartheid,with the intention of fostering reconciliation and national unity for the country. The date was chosen because it was significant to both Afrikaner and black African cultures. The government chose a meaningful date for both ethnic groups because they recognised the need for racial harmony. The celebration of the Day of Reconciliation can take the form of remembering past history,recognising veteran's contributions,marching,and other festivities.
uMkhonto we Sizwe was the paramilitary wing of the African National Congress (ANC),and was founded by Nelson Mandela in the wake of the Sharpeville massacre. Its mission was to fight against the South African government.
Johannes "Joe" Modise was a South African political figure. He helped to found uMkhonto we Sizwe,the military wing of the African National Congress,and was its longest serving Commander in Chief,deputised at different points in time by Joe Slovo and Chris Hani. Modise headed MK for a 25-year period,from 1965 to 1990. He served as South Africa's first black Minister of Defence from 1994 to 1999 and led the formation of the post-independence defence force.
The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality is a metropolitan municipality which governs Bloemfontein and surrounding towns in the Free State province of South Africa. Mangaung is a Sesotho word meaning "place of cheetahs",as it was not uncommon for the Basotho to name warrior regiments after ferocious animals.

Mrs Tryphina Mboxela Jokweni was popularly known as Mboxela in the neighbourhood. She died of illness at her house at Umlazi Township in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province at the age of 77 in 2002. Mboxela was the mother of three children.

Sarah Matawana "Olly" Mlamleli is a South African politician who served as the mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality from August 2016 until August 2020. A member of the African National Congress,she served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance,Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements from February 2012 to August 2016. In 2020,Mlamleli was ousted as Mayor of Mangaung and arrested over a controversial asbestos contract stemming from her time with the MEC.
Mxolisi Siyonzana is a South African politician who served as the Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in the Free State Province from 16 August 2021 until 6 March 2023. He replaced Olly Mlamleli,who was removed in a motion of no confidence back in August 2020. Siyonzana is a member of the African National Congress and the former speaker of the metropolitan municipality. He has been described as an ally of former Free State premier and current suspended ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule.

The uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) was an auxiliary political organisation affiliated to South Africa's African National Congress (ANC). It was founded in 1996 to represent the interests of individuals who had participated in the armed struggle against apartheid as members of Umkhonto weSizwe (MK),the ANC's armed wing. Although its relationship to the ANC and MK was not formally or legally codified,the organisation received a degree of de facto recognition both from the ANC and from the ANC-led government.
Thabo Manyoni is a South African politician who was the Mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality from 2011 to 2016. He represented his party,the African National Congress (ANC),in the Free State Executive Council from 2009 to 2011 and in the National Assembly from 2016 to 2017. He was Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the ANC's Free State branch from 2008 to 2017. He was also Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association from 2011 to 2016 and in 2019 he was appointed to a five-year term as Chairperson of South Africa's Municipal Demarcation Board.
Nkosinathi Benson Fihla is a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2013. He subsequently served as Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality from March 2013 until May 2015. Fihla first joined the ANC in 1954 through its Youth League and he was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1964 to 1978 for his work with Umkhonto we Sizwe.
Johannes Phumani Phungula was a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009. A veteran of the Defiance Campaign,he joined the ANC in 1952 and spent several decades as an underground operative for Umkhonto we Sizwe in rural Natal,working closely with Jacob Zuma. He was awarded the Order of Luthuli in Gold posthumously in December 2009.
Letsau Nelson Diale was a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist from Limpopo. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1956 and served eight years' imprisonment on Robben Island,from 1964 to 1972,for his work with Umkhonto we Sizwe. After the end of apartheid,he represented the ANC in the National Council of Provinces from 1994 to 1999 and in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2014.
Mzwandile McDonald Masala was a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1997 to 2004. He was the South African Ambassador to Zambia from 2004 to 2007.
Eric "Stalin" Mtshali was a South African politician,trade unionist,and anti-apartheid activist. He was a founding member both of the South African Congress of Trade Unions in 1955 and of Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961. He was also a stalwart of the South African Communist Party.
Holmes Peter Maluleka is a South African politician and businessman from Gauteng. A former Umkhonto we Sizwe operative,he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2014. During that period,he chaired the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises from 2010 to 2014. He later served on the board of South African Airways.
Papi Otukile Moloto was a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist. A veteran of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK),he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from November 2008 to May 2009.
Sibongile Pearm Tsoleli is a South African politician currently serving as an African National Congress councillor in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. She also serves in the Mayoral Committee of acting Mangaung mayor Gregory Nthatisi as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety. Tsoleli had previously served in the Free State Provincial Legislature and in the National Assembly of South Africa.
