Greta Sernander-DuRietz was a lichenologist, specialising in their ecology and biogeography as well as making collections of specimens. She was the first Swedish woman in this field of biology. She was active from around 1911 until 1928, and then from the early 1950s until the 1980s.

Life and career

Greta Sernander-DuRietz was born 1 November 1897 to Rutger and Signe (née Lindhagen) Sernader. [1] Her father was a prominent member of the Swedish scientific community as professor of plant biology at Uppsala University from 1908 until 1931. She did not matriculate from school or study at university, apart from attending her father's seminars. However, from these and accompanying him on collecting expeditions, she became interested and knowledgeable about lichens. Her interests developed into floristics, plant geography and plant ecology and resulted in her first scientific publication in 1919. In the 1920s she focused on phytogeography of several lichen species.

In 1924 she married the lichenologist Gustaf Einar Du Rietz who she had known for many years, and with whom she had collected lichen specimens. He followed her father as professor of plant biology at Uppsala University. They had a total of 4 children together, one of whom died at a young age shortly before she went with her husband to New Zealand in 1926–27 where they made extensive collections of lichens in the company of local scientists. They also visited Australia and collected some specimens there. [2] She prepared, drew and took photographs of the specimens for Du Rietz's publications about their discoveries. This expedition was the start of her life-long interest in the lichens of New Zealand [3] but the end of her scientific work as they had further children together. However, following a few difficult years, she divorced in 1951 and resumed her research. [1] In publications from 1957 onwards it was clear that she had resumed investigation into lichen ecology and also collecting specimens. She died 14 May 1981. [1]

Scientific legacy

In addition to her scientific publications, specimens that Sernander-DuRietz collected are in several herbaria including lichens and flowering plants collected from 1911 onwards in the Museum of Evolution Herbarium at Uppsala University [1] [4] and others now held at the University of Oslo and University of Wisconsin–Madison. [5] Her early research on lichen ecology, and collections of specimens, provide useful comparative data for more recent research such as on the ecology of lichens that grow on bark in Sweden. [6]

The endemic at risk New Zealand lichen Pseudocyphellaria gretae (Peltigeraceae) was named after her. [3] [7] :143

He was among other societies a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities and Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Sernander was one of the founders of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation in 1909, as well as its chairman during a number of the first years.

Mason Ellsworth Hale, Jr. was one of the most prolific American lichenologists of the 20th century. Many of his scholarly articles focused on the taxonomy of the family Parmeliaceae. Hale was one of the first lichen experts to incorporate secondary chemistry and technology such as computers and scanning electron microscopy into taxonomic work. Mason Hale published approximately two hundred articles and books on various aspects of lichen biology including taxonomy, anatomy, chemistry, and ecology. Hale also wrote several books aimed at education and increasing accessibility to lichens.

Hedda Maria Emerence Adelaïde Elisabeth Ekman, née Åkerhielm, credited as Elisabeth Ekman was a Swedish botanist, noted for her study of the genus Draba.

John Kenneth Bartlett was a New Zealand plant collector and botanist who specialised in mosses, liverworts, and lichens. In 1974, he found Bartlett's rātā growing south-east of Cape Reinga.

Adolf Hugo Magnusson was a Swedish naturalist who specialized in lichenology. He was a school teacher in Gothenburg from 1909 to 1948, but spent his spare time on the study of lichens. Magnusson published many monographs and floristic papers, specializing in crustose lichens. He formally described about 900 new taxa, specializing in the genera Lecidea, Lecanora, Caloplaca, and Acarospora.

Edvard August Vainio was a Finnish lichenologist. His early works on the lichens of Lapland, his three-volume monograph on the lichen genus Cladonia, and, in particular, his study of the classification and form and structure of lichens in Brazil, made Vainio renowned internationally in the field of lichenology.

Rolf Santesson (1916–2013) was a Swedish lichenologist and university lecturer. He was awarded the Acharius Medal in 1992 for his lifetime contributions to lichenology.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gunnar Degelius</span> Swedish lichenologist

Gunnar Bror Fritiof Degelius was a Swedish lichenologist. Between the publications of his first and final scientific papers, Degelius had a 70-year-long research career. While he was best known for his expertise on the lichen genus Collema, he also wrote important papers on lichen biology and ecology, floristic studies of the Nordic countries and various other areas around the world, and lichen succession. Degelius described 124 new taxa, and published about 130 scientific papers. In 1992 he was one of the first to be awarded the Acharius Medal for his lifetime contributions to lichenology. Fifteen species and three genera have been named in honour of Degelius.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Emmanuël Sérusiaux</span> Belgian lichenologist

Emmanuël Sérusiaux is a Belgian lichenologist. His career, spanning more than four decades, has combined both lichenology research and political aspects of nature conservation. He spent several periods working as a researcher at the National Fund for Scientific Research and the University of Liège, the latter in which he accepted a faculty position as professor and head of the Plant Taxonomy and Conservation Biology unit. Sérusiaux also served for three non-consecutive appointments as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Government of Wallonia. He retired from both his academic and political positions in 2019.

Punctelia ulophylla is a species of foliose lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. It is found in Europe, where it grows on the bark of a variety of trees.

Gustaf Einar Du Rietz was a Swedish botanist and lichenologist. His research interests included plant ecology, lichen taxonomy, and biogeography. He was a leading figure in the Uppsala school of phytosociology–the study of groups of species of plants that are usually found together–and is recognised for his role in advancing this field of science and for mentoring future lichenologists. He led the Swedish Australasian Botanical Expedition of 1926–27, a seven-month research tour of various locations. He was married to Greta Sernander, who was also a lichenologist. During the expedition, Du Rietz and his wife researched the vegetation in New Zealand, Australia, and Java, focusing on mountain lichens and their potential as bioindicators for environmental conditions. They collected around 3000 specimens, contributing significantly to the study of bipolar lichens and forest ecology, despite challenges in processing all the samples upon return to Sweden. Several species have been named in his honour. In 1949, Du Rietz was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and contributed significantly to nature conservation efforts in Sweden.

<i>Punctelia borreri</i> Species of lichen

Punctelia borreri is a species of foliose lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. It is a common and widely distributed species, occurring in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America. The lichen typically grows on bark of deciduous trees, and less commonly on rock. Some European countries have reported increases in the geographic range or regional frequency of the lichen in recent decades, attributed alternatively to a reduction of atmospheric sulphur dioxide levels or an increase in temperatures resulting from climate change.

Pseudocyphellaria brattii is a species of foliose lichen in the family Peltigeraceae. It was described as new to science in 1997 by lichenologists David John Galloway and Gintaras Kantvilas. The type specimen was collected along Mt. Dundas Track (Tasmania), where it was found growing on dead wood in a rainforest at an altitude of 700 m (2,300 ft). The specific epithet honours Tasmanian lichenologist Geoffrey Charles Bratt, who, according to the authors, "helped to keep Australian lichenology alive during the 'lean years'".

<i>Pseudocyphellaria glabra</i> Species of lichen

Pseudocyphellaria glabra is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Peltigeraceae. It has a pale-green upper thallus surface, a white medulla and white pseudocyphellae.

James Murray (1923–1961) was an organic chemist at the University of Otago. He was the first twentieth-century lichenologist in New Zealand.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ove Almborn</span> Swedish lichenologist (1914–1992)

Ove Almborn was a Swedish lichenologist and educator. Born in Ronneby, Sweden, Almborn grew up in an environment that nurtured his early interest in botany and lichens. His early academic interests and discoveries in new lichens inspired his doctoral dissertation, which focused on the distribution and ecology of lichens in South Scandinavia. After graduating from Lund University, he was employed at its department of systematic botany, initially as a senior lecturer and later as the curator of the botanical collections at its botanical garden.

Pannaria durietzii is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Pannariaceae. Primarily found in New Zealand, it has also been reported in southeastern Australia and Tasmania, and southern Chile, indicating a broader southern hemisphere distribution.

<i>Rhizocarpon superficiale</i> Species of lichen

Rhizocarpon superficiale is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Rhizocarpaceae. It occurs in Europe and North America.
