Gufran-Ullah Beig (born 24 May 1961) is an Indian meteorologist and a scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune. [1] [2] He is the programme director of System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), [3] a network of air quality and weather monitoring stations, which assists in the forecast of air quality and in maintaining an emission inventory. [4] An elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, [5] he received the Norbert Gerbier-Mumm International Award of the World Meteorological Organization in 2005, [6] the first Indian to receive the honor. [7] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences in 2006. Beig, born on 24 May 1961 in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, he completed his graduate studies in science from Rajasthan University in 1980 and obtained a master's degree in physics from Mohanlal Sukhadia University in 1983. [9] Subsequently, he enrolled for doctoral studies at Physical Research Laboratory and after securing a PhD in atmospheric physics in 1990, he did his post-doctoral studies at National Center for Atmospheric Research. On his return to India, he joined Mohanlal Sukhadia University as an assistant professor in 1994 and after a service of two years, he moved to National Physical Laboratory of India in February 1994 as a scientist (B-Grade). His stay at NPL lasted only 5 months and in July 1996, he joined (IITM) as a scientist (Grade-C). Over the years, he rose through ranks to hold the position of a scientist (Grade-G) and also heads the System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) programme as its director. [4] He is known for his studies on anthropogenic emissions of green house gases [10] and his studies have been documented in several peer-reviewed articles. [11] [note 2]
The World Meteorological Organization selected him for the Norbert Gerbier-Mumm International Award in 2005, making him the first Indian recipient of the honor. [2] [7] The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2006 [12] and three years later, the Indian Academy of Sciences elected him as their fellow. [5] He is also a recipient of the Young Muslim Scientist Award in physical sciences (1999) [7] and the Maharana Udai Singh Award (2007). [13]
Sachchida Nand Tripathi is an Indian scientist who works in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. He is the Dean of Kotak School of Sustainability and a Higher Administrative Grade Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and also joint faculty at the Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He currently holds the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Chair in the department. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Government of India awarded him with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, for his outstanding contribution in the field of Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary sciences in 2014. Prof. Tripathi is an elected Fellow of major Sciences and Engineering academies of the country: Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering and also holds J. C. Bose Fellowship of Department of Science and Technology (India). He was awarded the Infosys Prize 2023 in Engineering and Computer Science for the deployment of large-scale sensor-based air quality network and mobile laboratory for hyper local measurements of pollution, data generation and analysis using AI+ML for effective air quality management and citizen awareness, and for the discovery of new pathways of aerosols formation and growth that provide mechanistic understanding of haze formation.
Kalpathy Ramaier Katchap Easwaran is an Indian molecular biophysicist, academic and a former Astra Chair Professor and chairman of the department of molecular biophysics of the Indian Institute of Science. He is known for his contributions in the development of anti-fungal drugs and for his researches on ionophores and ion-transport across membranes. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences. Ghanshyam Swarup is an Indian molecular biologist, a J. C. Bose National Fellow and the head of the Ghanshyam Swarup Research Group of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology. He is known for his studies on glaucoma and the discovery of protein tyrosine phosphatase, a new protein influencing the regulation of cell proliferation.
