Jitendranath Goswami (born 18 November 1950) is an Indian scientist from Jorhat, Assam. He was the Chief Scientist of Chandrayaan-1, [2] and was also the developer of this project. [3] He served as a director of Physical Research Laboratory situated at Ahmadabad, Gujarat. He was also associated with Chandrayaan-2 and Mangalyaan.

Education

Goswami started his schooling in Jorhat. In 1965, he was sixth in the higher secondary examination conducted by AHSEC. Soon after, he enrolled in Cotton College to study Physics. [4] He got his MSc from Gauhati University and joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research for his PhD. [3] At this time he also worked as a post-graduate research scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. [3] In 1978, he received his PhD degree from Gujarat University.

Research

Following his PhD, Goswami conducted research at various institutions including UC Berkeley, Washington University in St. Louis, Lunar and Planetary Institute, and the Max Planck Institute. His research primarily centered on the Solar System and Astrophysics. Through collaborative efforts, evidence was presented suggesting the main source of energy for the solar system during its formation was the 26Al nuclide in its half-life. Goswami has also contributed to studies on Cosmic Rays and Tectonic Plates, resulting in various findings and conclusions. [3] At the Physical Research Laboratory, he participated in exploration projects, and contributed to ISRO in its early phases. He was an associate scientist for the Cosmic Ray experiment and the lead scientist for Lunar Samples on spacecraft Spacelab-3. [5] Additionally, he was a member of the Physical Sciences jury for the Infosys Prize between 2016 and 2018. [6]

Awards

Goswami was elected president of the Astronomical Society of India in 2007. He is a member of The World Academy of Science, Indian Academy of Sciences, European Association of Geochemistry and many other national and international astronomy associations.

Thekkethil Kochandy Alex is an Indian space scientist. He was the director of the ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC) of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) (2008–2012) and Member, Space Commission. He specialized in electro-optic systems and satellite technology. Starting with the first Indian satellite Aryabhata, he has been responsible for the sensor systems in all the Indian satellites. Under his leadership the Laboratory for Electro Optics Systems (LEOS) was established in 1993 and from the inception he was its director till 2008. He was conferred "Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professorship" in 2011.

Hitendra Nath Goswami is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janata Party. He served as Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly from 30 January 2017 to 20 May 2021. He was a member of Asom Gana Parishad until 16 February 2013, when he resigned from the party membership "expressing his frustration at the failure of the party leadership to bring in new blood to revive the regional force". He is known for his researches on the Indian monsoon dynamics and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences, India as well as The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences in 1995.
