Satish Kumar Kaura is an Indian technocrat, industrialist and the founder of Samtel Group, where he holds the post of the chairman. [1] He is also the chairman and managing director of Samcor Glass Limited and the executive director of Samtel Colour Limited. [2] An elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), [3] Kaura is the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. [4] The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2004, for his contributions to Indian industrial sector. [5]

Biography

S. K. Kaura was born in a middle-class family on 18 December 1944 and joining the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, he graduated in electrical engineering (BTech) in 1966. [6] Later, he moved to Canada and secured a master's degree (MS) in electronics from Carleton University. [7] Returning to India, he founded Samtel Group in 1973 and established Teletube Electronics Limited, a small industry for manufacturing television picture tubes, in 1974. [6] This was followed by two more ventures, Samtel India Limited in 1981 and an engineering firm, Samtel Engineering and Sourcing Solutions, in 1983. [8] In 1986, he established Samtel Color Limited, [9] with technical and commercial collaborations with conglomerates like Sumitomo Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation [10] and the company had an installed capacity of 10 million picture tubes per annum. [11] He also set up Samtel Display Systems (Later renamed Samtel Avionics Ltd. [12] ) for manufacturing of high-technology products for avionics and military applications, rugged displays, cockpit displays and equipment for military and commercial platforms. His son Puneet Kaura is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Samtel Avionics Ltd. [13] Samtel Avionics has two joint venture companies, [14] Samtel HAL Display Systems, in association with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in 2006, for the manufacture of electronic display systems [15] and Samtel Thales Avionics Limited, joining with the French multinational, Thales Group in 2010, for the manufacture of Helmet-Mounted Sight and Display Systems and modern Avionics Systems. [16] Samtel Glass Limited, incorporated in 1986, [17] and Samtel Machines and Projects Limited are the other companies founded by Satish Kumar Kaura. [18] The Group, as of 2005, has an employee strength of 4500 and has nine factories spread across India and Germany. [19]

Kaura has been associated with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), as the president of its Northern Chapter, [2] co-chairman of the National Committee on Defence [18] and as the chairman of the Industrial Policy Committee. [1] He has served as the president of the Electronic Industries Association of India [18] and has been on the board of ICICI Group, SRF Limited, Infinity I, Fame Mercantile, Capfin Leasing, Blue Bell Trade Link, and Parsec Technologies (India). [2] He is also a former member of the Review Committee of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Scientific Advisory Council, attached to the office of the Prime Minister of India. Awards and honours

Kaura is an elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) [3] and a member of the governing council of the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad (IMT-G) [7] and the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi. [20] When the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur instituted the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1989, he was the first to receive it. [6] He received the Care for Nature Award of the World Wide Fund for Nature in 1994 from Prince Philip, the then president of the organisation. [2] Lucknow Management Association awarded him the Uttar Pradesh Transformational Leadership Award to him in 2002 [1] and the Government of India included him in the 2004 Republic Day Honours list for the civilian award of the Padma Shri. [5] The Special Recognition Award of the Society for Information Display reached him in 2005 [19] as also the Electronics Man of the Year of the Electronic Industries Association of India and Consumer Electronics and TV Manufacturers' Association. [7] The Electronics For You Group honoured him with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. [21]

Satish Dhawan Indian mathematician and engineer (1920–2002)

Satish Dhawan was an Indian mathematician and aerospace engineer, widely regarded as the father of experimental fluid dynamics research in India. Born in Srinagar, Dhawan was educated in India and further on in United States. Dhawan was one of the most eminent researchers in the field of turbulence and boundary layers, leading the successful and indigenous development of the Indian space programme. He succeeded M. G. K. Menon, as the third chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1972.

Udupi Ramachandra Rao Satellite Man of India (1932–2017)

Udupi Ramachandra Rao was an Indian space scientist and chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation. He was also the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Physical Research Laboratory at Ahmedabad and Nehru Planetarium at Bengaluru and chancellor of the Indian Institute for Space Science and Technology (IIST) at Thiruvananthapuram. He is known as "The Satellite Man of India". He pioneered India's first satellite launch Aryabhata in 1975.

Anurag Kumar

Anurag Kumar was the Director of the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore, India from 2014–2020. He is a professor at the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering, and has served as the Chairperson of the Electrical Sciences Division at the Indian Institute of Science, before being appointed as the Director in 2014.

Ashok Jhunjhunwala is an Indian academic. He received his B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and PhD from the University of Maine. He has been a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras since 1981, where he is currently Institute Professor. During his career, he has contributed extensively to technology innovation and adoption in the Indian context.

He was Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and was in temporary charge of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Gwalior. From the year 2016 to 2020, Professor Dhande was the Chairman, Board of Governors of National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, an Institute established by the Government of India in the year 1963. He was also Chairman, Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology Delhi . Professor Dhande was the founder director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur. He served as a part-time member of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Also, he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India.

The Samtel Group is a manufacturer of displays and their components for television, avionics and professional applications. The group also provides engineering services and designs and builds automated processes and special purpose machines. It employs over 6000 people in nine factories and has a turnover of Rs. 12 billion per annum. Its display technology portfolio includes cathode ray tubes for TV and LCD for avionics displays. It developed plasma displays for TV but declined to pursue it commercially. It does not plan to pursue LCD for TV or other commercial applications.

Ramadas P. Shenoy Indian radar scientist (1929 - 2012)

Ramadas Panemangalore Shenoy was an Indian defence scientist and writer, known for his contributions in the field of Radar technology. He secured a doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and joined Defence Research and Development Organization in 1961, involving himself with the indigenous development of Radar technology till his retirement, as a Distinguished Scientist, in 1989.

Paranandi Venkata Suryanarayana Rao is an Indian computer scientist, known for his researches in the fields of speech and script recognition and is credited with contributions for the development of TIFRAC, the first indigenously developed electronic computer in India. He is a recipient of awards such as IEEE Third Millenium Medal, Vikram Sarabhai Award, Om Prakash Bhasin Award and VASVIK Industrial Research Award. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1987.

Vijay Kumar Chaturvedi is an Indian mechanical engineer and a nuclear power expert. He is a former Chairman and Managing Director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). He did his graduate studies in mechanical engineering at Vikram University- Samrat Ashok Technological Institute in 1965 and secured a master's degree in nuclear engineering from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Training School, Trombay.

Vaidyeswaran Rajaraman Indian engineer, academic and writer (born 1933)

Vaidyeswaran Rajaraman is an Indian engineer, academic and writer, known for his pioneering efforts in the field of Computer Science Education in India. He is credited with the establishment of the first academic program in computer science in India, which he helped initiate at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1965. An elected fellow of all the Indian science academies, he is a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in Science and Technology category for young scientists and several other honors including Om Prakash Bhasin Award and Homi Bhabha Prize. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honor of the Padma Bhushan, in 1998, for his contributions to science.

Suryanarayanan Srinivasan (1941–1999) was an Indian aeronautical engineer and the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), known for his pioneering work in rocket science. He also served as the director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre and assisted A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in the SLV3 Mission as its deputy director. He was an elected Fellow of the Aeronautical Society of India and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2000, for his contributions to Indian space program.

Saurabh Srivastava is an Indian entrepreneur, investment professional, institution builder and a former chairman of NASSCOM, a non-profit trade organization for the promotion of Indian IT industry. A master's degree holder from Harvard University, he founded Infinity Venture, reportedly the first venture capital fund in India and is a recipient of Dataquest Lifetime Achievement Award, the IT Industry Award from the Prime Minister of India and Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to trade and industry.

Samtel Avionics is an Indian company headquartered in Delhi. It manufactures equipment and systems for avionics, military, industrial, and professional applications. Samtel Avionics is a subsidiary of the Samtel Group.

Sudhir K. Jain Vice-chancellor of BHU

Sudhir Kumar Jain, referred to as Sudhir K. Jain is the incumbent and 28th Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He is a civil engineer by education and has formerly served three terms as the Founding Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. He has carried out intensive research and development in the fields of Seismic Design Codes, Dynamic of Buildings, and Post Earthquake Studies. Beside these, Prof. Jain has actively participated in teaching, research activities and development in Earthquake Engineering focused on developing countries. He is an elected fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering.
