Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan is an Indian aerospace and computer scientist. [1] He is a Professor of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Supercomputer Education Research Centre of Indian Institute of Science and a visiting professor of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. [2] Balakrishnan was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri [3] [4]

Biography

Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan, hailing from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, was born on 1 July 1950. [1] [5] [6] He graduated (BE Hons) in Electronics and Communication in 1972 from the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, [7] University of Madras and obtained his doctoral degree (PhD) from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru in 1979. [8] [9] [10] [11] He started his career as an assistant professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering of IISc and continues his service there as an associate director and professor. [1] [2] [5] [12] He also works as a visiting professor of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research [2] and the Institute for Software Research International, Carnegie Mellon University [13] [14] and is a director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Industrial Finance Corporation of India, Bharat Sanchar Nigam and the Data Security Council of India. [12] [15] Currently he is heading the National Supercomuting Mission of India approved by Government of India as 7-year project with a budget of 4,500 cr. [16] He held the Satish Dhawan chair professorship of the Division of Information Sciences of IISc from 2003 to 2006 [13] [14] and is a former member of the National Security Advisory Board and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. [1] He is a former Deputy Managing Director of El Forge Ltd, and has held the posts of a director at C-DOT Alcatel Lucent Research Centre [17] and Bharat Electronics. [12] He has also served as a director of the Central Bank of India from where he retired in January 2015. [12]

Balakrishnan is known to have contributed to the establishment of the National Centre for Science Information and Supercomputer Education Research Centre, in 1984 and 1994 respectively, at the Indian Institute of Science. [1] [13] He is involved with the Million Books to the Web Project (MBP), an initiative of the Digital Library of India. [1] [19] On the scientific front, his contributions are reported in the areas of monopulse array antennas and polarimetric Radars. [1] [13] His scientific achievements and observations have been recorded in over 230 articles published in many peer reviewed national and international journals, [1] [13] Google Scholar, an online repository of scientific articles, listing 216 of them. [20]

He was on the Engineering and Computer Science jury for the Infosys Prize from 2016 to 2018. [21]

Awards and recognitions

Balakrishnan received the UNESCO/ROSTSCA Young Scientist Award in 1985 followed by the J. C. Bose Memorial Award of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) in 1987. [14] Sri Hari Om Prerit Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award reached him in 1995 [1] and two years later, he received the Platinum Jubilee lecture Award from the Indian Science Congress. [14] He received two awards in 1998, the Institute for the Future Award and the Aeronautical Society of India Aerospace Education Excellence Award. [1] [14] The Indian National Science Congress awarded him the Millennium Medal in 2000 and he received the J. C. Bose Memorial Award for a second time in 2001 followed by the Alumni Award for Excellence from the Indian Institute of Science. [14]

The Government of India honoured him with the civilian award of Padma Shri in 2002. [12] [13] The Hari Om Ashram Trust awarded him the Homi J. Bhabha Award in 2004 [12] and Coimbatore Institute of Technology awarded him the Outstanding Alumnus Medal in 2006. [14] He received the Academy Excellence Award from the Defence Research and Development Organization in 2009 and Prof. S. N. Mitra Memorial Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 2013. [14]

Balakrishnan, a 2007 J. C. Bose National Fellow of the Department of Science and Technology, [1] [12] [14] is an elected Fellow of Third World Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, India and Institution of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineers. [1] [2] [5] [13] He is a recipient of the doctoral degree of PhD (Honoris Causa) from Punjab Technical University and has delivered the CDAC-ACS Foundation Award Lecture, Dr. Neelakantan Memorial Award Lecture and Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Lecture of the Indian National Science Academy. It was established by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, to mark the birth centenary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India. It is considered one of the most prestigious research institutes in India. In 2019, JNCASR was ranked #7 among the world's top ten research institutes by Nature journal in a normalised ranking of small research institutes with high quality output.

Roddam Narasimha FRS was an Indian aerospace scientist and fluid dynamicist. He was a professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (1962–1999), director of the National Aerospace Laboratories (1984–1993) and the chairman of the Engineering Mechanics Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. He was the DST Year-of-Science Chair Professor at JNCASR and concurrently held the Pratt & Whitney Chair in Science and Engineering at the University of Hyderabad. Narasimha was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2013. for his contributions to advance India's aerospace technology.

Dipankar Chatterji is an Indian molecular biologist and the Honorary Professor at Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, a multidisciplinary research institute under the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. He is known for his pioneering research on bacterial transcription. He is a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and is an elected fellow of all the major Indian science academies. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to science and engineering.

Narayana Balakrishnan Nair (1927–2010) was a marine biologist, ecologist and the founder president of Kerala Science Congress. He was known for his advocacy of trawling ban during monsoon seasons which was later accepted and imposed by the Government of Kerala. A Jawaharlal Nehru fellow, Nair was an elected fellow of all the major Indian science academies as well as the Zoological Society of London. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1971, for his contributions to biological sciences. He received the fourth highest Indian civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 1984.

V. Nagaraja is a Professor, Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He had received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in the year 1973 and 1975 from the Bangalore University. He completed his Ph.D. in 1981 from Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology at IISc and the work on mycobacteriophage I3 and role of DNA gyrase in mycobacteria set the stage for his later work when he joined the Institute as an assistant professor in 1989. After his PhD in 1981, he was a research associate at Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland (1981–85) and at Department of Biology, University of Rochester, USA(1985–89). He joined in 1989 as an assistant professor, in Centre for Genetic Engineering, IISc and was involved in setting up of the department. He became an associate professor in 1995 at Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, IISc, Professor in 2000 and served as professor and chairman of the department (2008–2013). He has been appointed president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) by the Cabinet Committee on Appointments with effect from 14 October 2015.

Narayanaswamy Srinivasan was an Indian molecular biophysicist and a professor and the head of Proteins: Structure, Function and Evolutionary Group at the Molecular Biophysics Unit of the Indian Institute of Science. He is known for his researches in the fields of computational genomics and protein structure analysis. An elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India, he is a J. C. Bose National fellow of the Department of Biotechnology and a recipient of the National Bioscience Award for Career Development of the Department of Science and Technology. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2007, for his contributions to biological sciences.

Swapan Kumar Pati is an Indian quantum chemist, a professor of the department of chemistry at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research and the head of the Quantum Theory Molecules to Materials Group at the institute. He is known for his studies on electronic optical and magnetic phenomena in molecular systems and is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2010, for his contributions to chemical sciences.

Rajinder Kumar is an Indian chemical engineer and a former professor at the Indian Institute of Science. He is known for his studies on multiphase phenomena and is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 1976. He received the third highest Indian civilian award of the Padma Bhushan in 2003. He is also a recipient of Om Prakash Bhasin Award and the VASVIK Industrial Research Award.
